I'm halfway through my A&P program and I like sheetmetal so I decided to do a very minor owner produced part project.   My 201 yoke switch covers (blanks) needed a refresh so I thought I'd just do a quick strip and repaint. Once I stripped them I wasn't happy with the condition of the old aluminum so decided to fabricate new ones. I tried .051" 2024T3 as well as .064" 2024T3 and 7075T6....I think I like the 7075 best.  First photo below show the old switch covers as installed. And the other two photos compare the old stripped covers (left) to the new covers that are almost ready for paint (still need a little more hand sanding).  I'll etch primer tomorrow and hopefully paint Sunday.  Will post final pictures when I can.

Boom! That reminds me, I need to do this for every single piece of my interior :D

It really makes those leather yokes look nice.

Owners making owner-produced parts don’t get to choose the design of the part (material type, alloy, thickness, dimensions, etc).  The part must conform to the original design, meaning you need the original part drawing, or need to reverse engineer it (including knowing material type and alloy).

Clearly this isn’t a safety critical part that is going to bring the airplane down if it doesn’t match the original design.  I’m not the FAA or LASAR, but I’d hate for someone to read this thread and think “I can make a new engine mount (insert any other safety critical part) for my airplane and choose whatever material and dimensions I want.”.

yes it would be so wrong to just run down to radio shack and put one of their parts in your certified aircraft.
