I seem to recall Blue On Top or somebody similar showing that the legacy flat wingtips were flat because they make less drag that way, which is why Mooney did it that way in the first place.    Since speed and fuel efficiency were the main optimizing criteria back then, that made sense to me.   The wingtips are hard enough to get around in my hangar as it is, I don't really want the wings longer if there isn't a significant practical benefit to doing so, and looks or control force aren't really an issue for me.

Owners pay ridiculous (imo) amounts for radios that are newer.  Are there benefits?  I can transmit and hear just fine on my legacy units.  They do so because the aesthetics and "look" is modern and visually pleasing.  I would never pay thousands for wingtip purchase and install, but I am glad my plane has them because they are visually pleasing.

You can believe what you want, but I can tell you that if the POH stall speed was off by 6 kts, that aircraft would have never been certified.

Secondly the part about consistently beating book speeds is more than a little suspect, I guess you believe that too?

My older J came from the factory with the upswept tips, they didn’t come out with the MSE

As far as the J model was concerned, the wingtips were introduced long before the MSE. They came factory equipped on serial number 24-1038 and later. Your J probably fell into that serial number range. It has nothing to do with the MSE, that was just the article I posted for the benefit of your education.
