Grant_Waite Posted April 20, 2024 Report Posted April 20, 2024 My 201’s cowl has had a few failures of the fasteners. In researching, I’ve found the ipc calls for 6 of Part #: AN526-1032R10. 2 for each side of the prop hub and 2 more for the forward most upper ones. Right now I believe it has Part# 40S5-5S cam locks that all come out. 2 of which have lost the metal pin. My question is, are the screws the ipc calls for the same size as these cam loc fastener receptacles? Are there any washers or grommets associated with the screws? The ipc doesn’t call for any receptacles, washers, or grommets but I find it hard to believe these just screw in and fit perfectly. If money wasn’t an issue I’d just buy the skybolt kit but there’s other things needing priority it seems all the time. I change my oil every 35 hours, so I take the cowl off a lot. I fly 35 hours or more in a month and half or less. The fuel alone I use in the short time frame, would hurt anyones funds available. Quote
PT20J Posted April 20, 2024 Report Posted April 20, 2024 There are three types of fasteners used on the cowling: 1) 10-32 screws at the front of the top cowling. These screw into nut plates on the lower cowling. You can use nylon plain washers on these to protect the paint if you wish. 2) Small (2700) Camlocs on the sides of the upper cowling that mate with receptacles on the lower cowling. These should have a split washer on the inside under the pin to keep them from coming completely out. Often these get lost and some people remove them so that the Camlocs can be completely removed to make the top cowling easier to remove. 3) Large (4002) Camlocs at the rear of the upper and lower cowlings that attach to receptacles on the fuselage. These should be captive and are difficult to change without special pliers. Quote
Guest Posted April 21, 2024 Report Posted April 21, 2024 I feel your pain. Just changed the oil and my cam locks are a frankensteinish conglomeration of incorrectly sized cam locks. It took my son and I at least an hour to get that thing back on and the right camlock in the right hole. I want to do the sky bolt as well, but I would like to see it on someone's plane first...
