Himark Posted March 12 Report Posted March 12 (edited) Hello everyone...NEWBI here but not new to the aviation world. Glad to be a part of this community.. So I have used the search feature and found dual removal advice. My 1982 K Mooney has been sitting for several years and we are getting it back to service. I have found there is a bunch of talk about failed couplers which is indeed my low charge problem. However, going through service manual there is nothing on r and i alternator. Looks like a guy can pull the oil filter adapter and drop it down?? and or will I need to pull one mag also? Any advice??? Edited March 12 by Himark Quote
231MJ Posted March 13 Report Posted March 13 I have removed the left mag and taken it out of the top. If I remember right, the nut on the left side is a bear to get off. I have found the ratcheting wrench from Home Depot (forgot the name of their brand) to be thin enough to get into that space. I think the others two are not hard to get at. Replacing the coupling is a good idea if you don't know it's history. 1 Quote

If you have the 262 you have the -MB engine which has the option of two alternators. Was that a Husky wrench? Quote
231MJ Posted March 13 Report Posted March 13 I do have the MB with two alternators and the belt driven alternator does need to come out first but that's really easy. I didn't think Himark had the MB engine so I did not mention that. It is the Husky ratcheting wrench I used - the head is thinner and the throw on the wrench is tighter (I don't know how to explain that very well) so it's kinda perfect for that third bolt. Getting the alternator out is a pain and you need to be careful re-attaching the cables, I cracked the brush holder once - $250 for that baby. Quote
milotron Posted March 15 Report Posted March 15 If I recall, the manual suggest tilting the engine forward on it's mounts to get the gear driven alternator out. Quote
Himark Posted March 20 Author Report Posted March 20 **UPDATE, Yes, You can get the alternator out the bottom if removing the oil filter adapter. Remove a couple of scat tubes and the LH innercooler support leg. I was able to drop it down and it was tight to get past the cowl flap actuating rod but can be done. I may remove this cross over cowl flap tube to reinstall just to be a little easier. It will go by but is to a millimeter in clearance at that point. Quote
