Hello,

I've been shopping around for an install cost on a FS-450 and an EDM 700. I originally was looking for the EDM 700 but I was quoted $5,755.89 installed and so I looked at a FS-450 and was quoted $2840 for the install of a FS-450 if I provided the instrument. Are these numbers high or is this really what is to be expected when installing EDM 700s or FS-450s? I'm new to aircraft ownership (technically partnership) and may not of realized how expensive upgrades are.

If someone can recommend an avionics shop near Dallas, or if you can't recommend one in Dallas I am willing to fly anywhere in Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Arkansas, or pretty much any state near Texas. I'd prefer to get it done locally so I don't have to get an airline ticket to get back and to pick it up.

That's something like 31 plus hours labor to install a simple 450 they are nuts keep shopping,

I did one in a day interfaced .

Jacob,

I had the JPI830 installed last year.  The cost of the unit and install was around $5100 with all functions of the 830 hooked up and working.  It was done by a Mooney Service Center.

I have had a couple of the FS-450 units in different airplanes and they are awesome units. Your quote leaves me at a loss for words. I would recommend calling Don Maxwell and asking him what he thinks it would take. He is in Longview which is relatively close, and he routinely helps out with shuttle to/from Longview for customer convenience. I would be curious to hear what he says, as I am considering adding a FS-450 in my current Mooney. Good luck!

$2800 to install an Fs-450 seems a bit steep to me.

This is what the install involves:

you will need 2 new fuel hoses to replace the one you have now between the pump and the injector. (~ $100 to $150 for the 2 hoses). Their size need to be carefully  determined for routing without kinks.

Pull the provided wires thru the firewall and connect to the panel unit. I would say top 5 hours to do the work firewall forward and install the unit in the panel.

If the unit is to be connected to a gps (like a 430), 2 wires will need to be connected to the back of the unit. Add a coupel hours for that and the paper work (337 and log entry)

Of course, the work can be more complex if you need to move instuments around the pannel.

Since you don't have an engine monitor already, *I* would place a higher priority and value on getting that installed ahead of the fuel flow instrument.  Ideally you could do both at the same time and just read the fuel data through the EDM-700 and save the cost/hassle/panel space involved with the separate FS-450 display head.

If you (and/or partner) are mechanically inclined at all, you can do a good portion of the tedious work yourself as it just involves routing the wires to the probes and connecting them to the harness with screws/nuts/washers.  There might be 8-10 hours of this work that doesn't require special skill...just the ability to follow directions.  You'll need to have someone qualified to supervise and sign it off, though.

With all of the new monitors on the market now, you might be able to find some EDM-700's used for a good deal, so shop around.

After you get it installed, you and your partner should take the Advanced Pilot Seminars course to learn how to interpret what it tells you, too.
