jetdriven Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 One thing also is they add almost the entire value to the airplane. As Jimmy G. says, you can buy it and enjoy it for a few years, or buy it to sell it. Quote
PTK Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 Quote: pjsny78 If you are going to be spending this kind of money why not consider the G500 you can buy that loaded with SVT and all the options installed for under 20k. I rather have that then a GTN or avidyne. Quote

N601RX Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 Quote: allsmiles I agree these boxes will not change the inherent characteristics of our Mooneys e.g. speed, comfort etc. What they will do however is expand the airplane's horizons in wx minimums. WAAS approaches are a wonderful thing and the safety they introduce cannot be underestimated! There are alot of fields that had no instrument approaches until WAAS came along. I know in my home field even our one VOR approach is 620 feet. The GPS approach to the same runway lowers us to 460 feet! With vertical guidance mind you! This is a significant margin of safety. So yes they are expensive but the safety they bring us is unprecedented! Quote
bnicolette Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 Quote: N601RX As Jose pointed out its a personal choice about how much money you want to spend. I went through the same though process a few months ago and came to the conclusion that a $600 kln 89B will get me a nonprecision approach into the same airports with a slightly higher mins. Many of tha airports I use have an ILS anyway. To me 160ft for $22,000 isn't a lot of bang for my buck. A garmin X96 gives all the other info I need. Quote

Piloto Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 I don't know about you guys but I get more enjoyment looking at this on a 70" HD TV than looking at waypoints on a 7" touch screen in my hangar for much less than $22K. José Quote
DaV8or Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 Quote: allsmiles Pat, you still need the GPS to drive the G500. So the cost doubles! Quote
Cris Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 Well like Jose' and others I do not have an extra 22K laying around for this type of upgrade. I'm going to stick with my KLN 94 & GMX 200 for the time being. FWITW I do know that anyone buying a plane today seems to want WASS and expects the seller to take a haircut without it. (Personally I only fly to airpots with ILS so I don't really care.) I used that to my advantage when I bought my A/C last year so I would suspect that within 5 years all of us will have to update if we ever expect to sell. It's kind of like a house that needs updating every five-ten years. At the five year mark you might as well upgrade & enjoy the look for five years before selling as the buyer will want to make a reduction if you do not do the upgrade. With that said it occurs to me that there will be new product from King/Aspen & Avidyne will get a chance to work out the 540 bugs. Some products may get an extended life like the voice activated flight plan for the Garmin 430/530 series and maybe even something else on the horizon. Quote
PLANEGUY Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 Just to anwser all the people that ask a GTN 750 installed not counting tax will run you between 17k and 18k depending on the panel work not counting any trade in values on your old equipment. Quote
N601RX Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 Keep in mind that most all of us will be spending around $5000 for a new transponder between now and 2020 to met the ADSB out regs. Better save some money for it. Quote
jetdriven Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 I just got off the phone with the owner at Avionics Unlimited in Conroe, they are quoting (over the phone) 13,500 for the GTN-750. 3600$ install labor, and 200$ parts. GI-106 indicator, 1900$, 500$ labor. Audio panel, 3500$ installed. That alone is like 23k. How are these guys getting them for 18K laid in? Interestingly, the GTN-750 is only about 3K more than the IFD-540. N601RX Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 The 106 indicator is not always needed. There are some older ones already installed like the KI 206 that will work also. If you want to find the cheapest price call around to gulf coast, sarasota, san lupas and tell them you would like to purchase one out the door with no install for an experimental. Quote

Cris Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 Do I understand that Garmin has recalled all the GTN 750's for a possible bad board? More to the point the unit has to go back to the factory for inspection &/or modification if required. Quote
