I no longer have to be concerned with melting lenses. Pictures don’t do them justice. They’re much brighter than what comes across in photos. Well worth the expense. Chuck 2 Quote

Posted March 13, 2024 Report Posted March 13, 2024 Good afternoon folks - I received two of these replacement recognition lights yesterday for my Ovation and am wondering how to install them. The old lights attached to the wing tip structure with two screws (pictures show this clearly). The replacement lights have no screw mounts but otherwise will fit fine. Do we just put a dab of adhesive to fix the light to the wingtip? Some other method? The light should be removable down the road. Whelen says it's a minor alteration requiring logbook entry. The legal answer is an owner can't do any alteration, minor or major. A minor alteration just requires a logbook entry by an A & P, not a form 337, which is required for a Major alteration. Quote

For details of what "supervision" means, talk to the mechanic you will work with on a particular job, and realize that each job has different supervision requirements. There are also times / tasks for which this will not be permitted. Quote

Either way, my question remains how to attach the light housing to the wing tip shelf. The light housing has no obvious attaching mechanism (no screw holes, no clips or latches, etc.). I assume my 2008 Ovation wing tip geometry is the same as all other Ovations and Bravos that had factory recognition lights. What did you guys do to retrofit? Quote

The lights are meant to be attached with a spring clip that held in the old Whelen recog lights. If your installation didn’t still have those clips, maybe someone here knows where they can be procured. No screws are necessary to install the lights. Quote
PT20J Posted March 14, 2024 Report Posted March 14, 2024 @LANCECASPER's picture appears to be from the Whelen website. The wingtip is different than @Ed de C.'s. I looked in the M20R & S IPC and it shows a wingtip like the Whelen picture. I don't know why this one is different. Aftermarket replacement maybe? Maybe another Ovation owner knows. That bracket on the original recognition light isn't the Mooney standard mounting. Someone glued a bracket to the light and attached the lamp with screws. Mooney used a spring clip on the back of the bulb to retain the lamp. Anyway, it's pretty clear that the recognition light will need to be mounted vertically because it cannot shield the nav light and be legal. It's fortunate that it fits because it would not fit vertically in the standard wingtip. Quote

Mine are on order from Gallagher, should arrive in a couple of days. How are you folks making the wire terminations? Are you removing the quick connectors for the old lights and either soldering the wires or using crimp connectors or are you reusing the quick connectors? My A&P (Brian Kendrick) is going to help me with the change out but he gave me the option of how to connect. Any advice is appreciated. Quote

PT20J Posted October 10, 2024 Report Posted October 10, 2024 Should be the same as my M20J. There was lots of extra wire so I just used crimp butt splices. Easy and quick to install. I don't expect to ever have to replace the LED lights, but there's plenty of wire there if I do. Quote
