My effort to locate a trim duct/boot for an E model has come up with nothing, only to be told they are on backorder indefinitely. Has anyone come up with an alternative like scat hose?

Are you looking for the intake duct?  Those do seem difficult to find.  Is it repairable?

If it’s a different part, throw up the part number and maybe check the used/serviceable stuff…

That part number seems to be a bushing.  I don’t remember any kind of boot covering my trim jack screw. 
 

Just to verify, are you taking about the jack screw in the tail of the plane that causes the tail to pivot?

I think he is talking about the boot that covers the jack screw and link in the tail. It lives between the fuselage and the tail.

Not that I'm advocating using non-approved parts, but a piece of corrugated radiator hose would keep the dirt out.

Look at 1  1/2" SCAT tubing    Single wall

Of course you have to disconnect the jack screw to get it on

Presently living in a sea of part numbers and copied the wrong one:

740156-003

False alarm on the bushing, Clarence already helped me track those down.

All I am going to say at this point is that I have learned a lot. Additionally, if you're interested in making your Mooney(or radial powered airplane) perfect, I highly recommend Mike at Round Power Aviation in Orange, Ma.

Just as a reminder - the 2    1/4 inch bolts that hold the tail on are close tolerance bolts.

Regular AN bolts will not work as they allow too much play in the bolt bushings. The movement tolerances are very small Check the MM

Also many do not realize that the hinge is actually a secondary load path for the entire tail assembly

I’m also having difficulty finding the part 740087-003 trim duct. I took off a spring with canvas sewn onto it but the canvas was deteriorated. Not finding the actual part…

I looked for the same part only to find a piece of scat is the replacement

It would seem a light-weight canvas fabric could be patterned and sewn up to fit the ‘wire spring’ and replace the original material.  Sew velcro on the seam and it could be easily removed for the 100 hr/annual inspection.

I wonder though, if the jackscrew is even exposed to that much dirt.  It’s enclosed pretty well with the panels.  Unless you’re operating frequently on unimproved runways (aka, piperpainter), is the jackscrew boot even necessary?  

Maybe we should have a poll…

Mine had nothing there when I bought it. When the bolts/bushings/bracket were replaced three years ago because my AP/IA felt there was too much play I ordered the replacement boot from Lasar. They sent a piece of scat tube that was a few inches long.

Obviously I jumped onto MS to see what others had done. The scat hose was a great idea, so I grabbed some 2 1/2” hose, cut a 4 1/2” piece, and cut about one ring of wire from each end. Bent the end of the wire and covered it (and the string ends) with a little RTV. 
I bent the first wire ring on one end into a square so it would rest on the mounting tabs and make it easier to screw on. The other end floats so I squeezed it into an oval so it fit over the bolt better on the tail side.  
I think it turned out much better than factory. Here are some photos.
