Just got my 2022 San Diego Property Tax Bill for the Mooney.  It went up 56% from 2021 !!!   With inflation reported to be 8-10%, how can Govt. possibly raise taxes 56%?  I'm calling the tax office to bitch on Monday.  Anyone else seeing increases that seem to track the raging aircraft market?  I'm voting with my "pocket book" from this day forward regardless of what else folks are whining about.

Luckily I only pay property tax on the hangar yearly and not the airplane.  Washington got me for use tax when I bought it but not a yearly property tax.  California is tough, but parts are beautiful!

The tax office has essentially zero to do with setting the rates or policy.   Bitch at your elected officials that voted in the changes or rates.   The worker at the office is just doing a job to make a wage.

I can't agree in this case.  They send a complex form every year that provides the specs for your plane; avionics, hours, hours SMOH, interior and exterior condition, etc.  Then they assess the value and apply the rate that the elected officials mandate.  I've owned the plane for 18-20 years.  The rate hasn't changed; only the assessed value.  In this case, the workers in the office do much more than apply policy.  Its very reasonable to question the basis for a 56% increase when the rates or policy hasn't changed (that I'm aware of).  Mooneys may have gone up 30% but not 56%.

That's what it looks like.  I compared last years bill and the rate appears to be the same; so it has to be the assessed value that's different.

That’s not at all true. I call every year. They use Google etx to guess the value. You can correct their mistakes.

For sure call them. Also did you enter the engine hours wrong or add avionics on the form?

Property tax based on valuation of a 50 year old machine…?

Without anything to compare to like a fixed neighbor…

Or a Kelly’s blue book…

what’s the value of a 60’s automobile with 900k miles on it?  Does property tax apply here as well?

Sounds really important to have a good accountant Familiar with aviation on your team… :)

When discussing taxes… I often invite @Danb to the conversation….

Come to the Garden State…. Kinda sounds idyllic doesn’t it….?

Best regards,

Sound like a very large increase.  Can I ask what the total is?  Does this rate increase apply to your home, or other vehicles?

Remember, the OP is in the Republik of Kalifornia, where tax bills are sent out and collected by The Board of Equalization, whose job appears to be to soak anyone appearing to be rich and bring them down closer to the average for the Republik. Airplane owners are all rich by default, regardless of the age or value of the airplane. Everyone can't afford to own an airplane, so those who do must be rich! Equalize them!

I don’t think the rate increased, the state’s evaluation of the basis value increased. my property and vehicle taxes have gone up too.

The question I'm curious to know, what is the dollar amount?  Did it increase from $100.00 to $156.00 , or $1000.00 to $1560.00?  The first most wouldn't notice, the later more so.

I'm used to AZ where we pay $25/year for registration regardless.

It went from $577 to $906.  Manageable, but If it were a much more expensive Mooney, the price difference would have been substantial.  I'm more concerned about the jump in one year.  The tax office is throwing darts at the assessed value.  I've got a boat too taxed by the same office.  Will be interesting to compare that bill.

Our friends are in the Saddlebrook and Dove Mountain communities.  That's a beautiful area.

Exactly.  It's never about how hard you work or the choices you make over a lifetime.

It could also just be a different assessor. It’s not scientific. Each county has their own person responsible for guessing values for boats, rvs and airplanes (those three seem to be grouped together for some reason ).
Are you sure you filled out the assessment the same? Did you get engine hours wrong or report any new avionics?

California is seriously tough in tax assessments and collections. My comments are not to be considered as professional opinions, I haven’t a clue regarding California tax revenue except income tax.

A cursory look at there regulations appear that the rates haven’t changed this year, they apparently observe the selling price of valuable assets along with asking prices to establish the valuation to be taxed.

Since we’ve mentioned throughout the year how much the inventory’s value has risen I’d assume a little guy/gal rolled up their sleeves inputting the new valuations times tax rate for a nice windfall for the county. Gotta love living in Delaware.

Wonder if the values plummet if you’ll get a reduced rate in the future

I've seen my tax rates go up and down, but how often have you seen actual taxes due go down after a rate change??? For me, never . . . . .

No.....

Tax bills are uni-directional.  Only up.
