motolou Posted March 20, 2022 Report Posted March 20, 2022 I am about to put in an offer to purchase a 1966 M20C. I am wondering if my 6'3" son will fit, headroom wise. If it wasn't 300 miles away, I would have him try it on. Can anything be done to provide more headroom if needed, short of removing seat padding? Quote

Can anything be done to provide more headroom if needed, short of removing seat padding? In the front seat? Sure. The seats are only about 8" off the floor when compressed by an adult. Just slide the seat back. Scrunching a 6-3" adult into the back seat might be a challenge leg-length wise. Quote
David Lloyd Posted March 20, 2022 Report Posted March 20, 2022 Front seat, no problem, he should have plenty of head room. My C has more head room than the F33A Bonanza I had. Back seat would be pretty cramped. Quote
ShuRugal Posted March 20, 2022 Report Posted March 20, 2022 He will be plenty comfortable in the copilot seat. I'm 5'8", and I have to sit with the seat all the rest forward during takeoff/landing to get full range of motion on the pedals. The seats have something like 8" of adjustment range in the "normal" range, and can be slid back about another 8" from the rearmost position to the back seat. Unless your son has his extra 7" in his neck, he'll be fine.Sent from my Pixel 3a using Tapatalk Quote
KSMooniac Posted March 20, 2022 Report Posted March 20, 2022 I concur, he'll be fine in the front without issue. Sent from my LM-V405 using Tapatalk Quote
smwash02 Posted March 20, 2022 Report Posted March 20, 2022 I'm 6'3" and formerly had a '66C. I found it very comfortable. However, don't plan on putting anyone tall behind him. Quote
carusoam Posted March 20, 2022 Report Posted March 20, 2022 Go sit in a Corvette… Make airplane noises… While looking up towards the sky…. I’m only 6’ even… Went from 1965 M20C to M20R… Mooneys and Corvettes were built for tall people, by tall people… FUBU… They have very similar seating arrangements… the Mooney feels more comfortable, less tight than the Vette… Get the search going… There is an M20C listed here a day ago… find the @the_elkhartian he is selling an M20C, with engine upgrade… aka M20E… Best regards, -a- Best regards, -a- Quote
motolou Posted March 20, 2022 Author Report Posted March 20, 2022 Thanks to all who replied. I am going to try to get the M20C that I have been drooling over. 1 Quote
carusoam Posted March 21, 2022 Report Posted March 21, 2022 Make it happen Moto! Good luck…. Mooney Chicken and egg situation… defined! To see a Mooney 300nm away… it helps to have a Mooney to get there… That’s like an hour and a half away… You get a Great Dad Award today… There aren’t enough Dads around here that are that concerned about their sons comfort in a Mooney… Of course… Most kids around here get introduced to the Mooney back seats much earlier than when they are 6’ 3”…. Greg Ellis Posted March 21, 2022 Report Posted March 21, 2022 I am 6'2" and I do just fine in the front. A good friend of mine is much taller and he does quite well up front. I have sat in the back of an A model and a C model and have done just fine although I would not want to be in the back seat for a long cross country. My friend who is probably 6'4 or 6'5 has been in the back of my C model and did okay for a 2 hour flight but I don't think he would have wanted to be in there much longer. So front seat good, back seat ok for short flights. Quote
A64Pilot Posted March 21, 2022 Report Posted March 21, 2022 Mooney cabin wise is more of a girth thing than tall thing, tall people fit easily, wide people not so much. Depending on your physical ability it can be a tough airplane to get in and out of too. In the last 6 months I’ve had both knees replaced and can’t bring myself to kneel, so it’s harder for me to get in and out of than say a Cessna with its high wing and two doors. Being young probably makes it a non issue. I’ve flown four in my J but we look at it as a two seat airplane with a large baggage compt. 1 Quote
