Don, I'm surprised you couldn't get it done today :D

I was about to jump up and go to the airport, then noticed it was 3:00 and decided I didn't want to fight the long line of traffic to get onto 280 when I could get the same result tomorrow morning and go fly and try it out .

So is this part the same as the gi-275 update preventing a red x with blocked pitot?  I don’t have a gtn, so no smart glide, I’m wondering if I should do the update.  Usually I do all updates, but it’s been working perfectly….

  • Improved AFCS operation with blocked pitot tube

What's the practical effect of this for a G5 owner? You still need the GTN Xi with Smart Glide?

I saw that too. Perhaps the GI 275 and GSU 25D use the same ADAHRS design. In some Garmin manual (can’t remember which one) Garmin did state that the G5 and GSU 25D use a different design.

I went flying this morning and got an AHRS IGRF data out of date message on my G3X. Looks like the IGRF data for the G3X update for the new magnetic field model requires the 9.0 update per the note on the bottom of  Garmin Support Page

Note: For G3X Touch systems, the system will receive the 2020 IGRF file with a G3X Touch software update to software version 9.00

Got my appointment scheduled for Monday afternoon to update all my avionics, excited to add the smart glide features as I had not updated the 650xi yet!

I have an Xi navigator, Dual G5's, and GFC500. What else, besides this software update do I need? Just have a panel mounted smart glide button installed?

You just need a Xi navigator with the upgraded software, and a flight display (G3X, G5, G275, G500/600 ect) with the correct software updates. The updates mentioned above added G5s and G3Xs to the list of approved flight displays.  The panel mounted button is an option but not required.  Without it you can activate smart glide by holding the Direct to button for 2 seconds or the emergency touch button in the menu.

All the Garmin equipment for my panel was ordered in June for an installation beginning in August. Everything was available but the Smart Glide buttons. I just checked today and Garmin is still telling dealers they are five weeks out. It isn’t necessary, of course, but I started out as a hardware engineer and have always disliked the tricks software engineers use when they run out of buttons (hold it down vs press, push multiple buttons in a sequence, push combinations of buttons simultaneously, push the same button multiple times, etc.) It’s right up there with my distaste for multi-level and multi-page menus. But, that’s just me ;)

so, you have a Motorola StarTac? :)

No, an iPhone which I spend a of time cursing at. But I have finally trained myself to back all the way out of the phone app instead of just hanging up like a normal person to avoid butt dials :D

Thanks for mentioning this.   I was going to the hangar today, anyway, so I d/l'ed it and installed it in both G5s.    Went fine.

Crap.  I got that error when I fired up on Saturday.  I guess at least you've told me what it is but I'm not super happy that I need to pay someone for an update.  I presume this cannot be user/owner installed?

Well, technically it requires a logbook entry. If you have an A&P friend you could do it yourself and have them sign it off. But Garmin makes it available (unlike the GTNs where only the dealers can get the software updates :(). https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?partNumber=G3X-TCERT-00&tab=software

What a waste of money putting in the button would be!  After having my G5 updated today, I went out and tested the system.  It worked as advertised.  I was a little surprised for a few seconds after I engaged it with some power still in.  The plane immediately pitched up and I waited to see what would happen.  I don't remember if I had it on altitude hold.  I need to go out and try that again.  At any rate, it pitched up significantly climbed and bled off airspeed until it hit best glide speed, then maintained it as the descent started.  In thinking about it, I need to go out and redo the test, this time with power off before engagement.  Actually, that probably isn't a bad idea if it was planned that way, as airspeed converted to altitude would increase the range.

Regarding the button, holding down the Direct button is a no brainer, as is going to the main menu and pressing the Emergency icon.
