Hey guys I went flying today and had a little problem with my starter.  When I went to crank the motor I moved the key to the start position and it made the noise that it always does.  Then when I pushed in the key to get things going nothing happened.  I cycled the key and master a few times and then it cranked normally.  Does anyone know why it would do this???  My second question is when you move the key to start does that make the starter gear spin and then when you push the key in is that what makes it engage the prop??

Thanks

That did happen to me with my Bendix "turn to start" switch. At some point, it took ten tries to get the starter to engage. Then I found out that it would start almost at the first try when I would "tilt" the key in a certain direction while turning...

I decided I had seen enough and changed the switch with a new one and haven't experienced the problem again...

No, the noise you hear when you turn the key to start is the "shower of sparks" vibrator.  It sends a more or less continuous spark from one mag. (I think it is the left)  This helps the engine start easier.

The starter only spins when you push in the key. When it spins, the bendix forces the starter gear into the flywheel starter gear.  once the engine spins faster than the starter, the gear retracts.

drapo, What switch did you end up using? Was it a direct replacement?  What were the costs associated with it?

Thanks

Hey guys....went out to the plane today and I ran into the same problem with the starter....this time I could not get the starter to spin at all.  I ended up taking the cowling off and sprayed a little WD-40 on the gear.  Still no luck.  I could hear the shower of sparks and then when I push the key in I would hear a click but nothing.  So my question is this....what is this part?  Could this be the source of my problems?  Anyone know what part it is/where can I get a new one?  I was able to see that the white cable goes to the starter and it looked like it was attached properly.

It was weird....the other day when I went to start up it didnt work when I pushed the key in.....so I tried it a couple of times and then it worked fine.   Flew up to Wichita and back with no problems.  I'll have to check out the NL version.

I had a similar problem.  I took my volt meter and chased it down to the master switch.  My master switch is a single throw double pole.  I wasn't getting continuity between the poles that complete the starter circuit.  I had lots of corrosin on the terminals.

You might want to have your A&P remove the LS, test it.  If it's bad I rec upgrading to the NL.  Not too expensive, only about $400 plus labor to install.

I just had the mechanic put a 149NL on my bird. Lost a little weight too. I'm hoping it solves my hot start difficulties with the faster turn rate. I'm 9000 miles away from my airplane right now so I can't say how well it works, but so many of you folks recommended it that I figured it must be good.

Skytec has some really great customer support.  I was able to take my old one off (PITA) and send it in to Skytec.  For $165 I got mine "overhauled" which once arrived looked to me to be brand new.  I sent the old one in on Tuesday and recieved my new one on Thursday.  My mechanic was going to let me put it in and check my work but I ran into a stumbling point yesterday.  One of the dowl pins from the old starter was stuck in the engine where it mounts.  I tried as best as I could to get it out but didnt have any luck.  So should have 65G back up and running sometime next week.
