Wow, not sure how I missed the other thread…a little late to the party I guess.

Smart Glide

Smart Glide leverages some of the logic used in the Collier award-winning Autoland system. To determine the airport, the system takes into account runway length/surface type, bank angle/turn radius required, glide ratio, estimated altitude at destination, wind speed/direction, terrain/obstacles and if available via datalink, the reported airport METAR. If no airport is within glide range, the system will alert that to the pilot visually and aurally and automatically engage the GFC 500 or GFC 600 autopilot in IAS mode to pitch the aircraft to best glide speed and roll mode to level the wings.

I attended the Garmin seminar on the Smart Glide. While it is STC'd for the GTNs, it isn't as yet for the G5, and the G5 is part of the GFC 500.  They say sometime in August.

They made it pretty clear that it was an assist so that the pilot could spend valuable time looking up emergency checklists instead of doing mathematical computations.  When the system is complete sometime next month, it will automatically take you to the center of the designated airport where it will tell you to  complete the landing.

They recommended practicing with it before there might be a time when you needed it.  Leave it to Garmin to keep coming up with novel new things their products can do.

I didn’t see the talk, but their brochure says the initial release in Aug will be with the GI-275. No dates listed yet for the other planned devices listed in the brochure.
indeed - very cool tech!

there is another thread on this topic here from a few days ago.

It’s supposed to be available for G3X in Q4. Garmin says the installation instructions and switch kits are available now so I’m going to have the switch installed when I have the G3X installed next month and then get the software installed when it’s available.

Darn - I wasn't wanting to send any more money right away to team Garmin.  But this might end up being the killer app that tips the balance toward yeah - I think I may.

I just a few months ago had the GI275 pair installed driving my KFC200 and it works fantastic.  And I figured I would go with that for awhile.

Anyone here think there is any chance that they might allow this system to work with other autopilots.  Would someone at Osh please ask the reps at the Garmin Tent?

I have a gtn650 and it would not be a big deal to upgrade to the txi.
