AirVenture 2021

AirVenture seems almost normal.  It was a lot easier to get in today.  I'm not sure if it was because of the traffic changes made or a little lighter attendance so far.  There were a lot of people on the grounds; very few wearing masks, but I haven't gone into the Hangars, yet.  Too many Seminars and other things to see.

I'm planning on heading up on Thursday.  Do you think there will be some camping left?  Also, does a 68C qualify for vintage aircraft parking?  I can't seem to find the rules on the EAA website and not sure what camping area gives me the best chance of getting a spot

TCUD,

Do you have the NOTAM 2021….

It usually has all the details…. Including signs language…

https://www.eaa.org/airventure/eaa-fly-in-flying-to-oshkosh/eaa-airventure-oshkosh-notam

I found where the notam is supposed to be… but I don’t see the thirty page document there….

Dang thing is hidden in plain/plane sight/site…

:)

A 1968 will qualify for Vintage, it's 1971 and older. But it will be dependent on people leaving, we got here Sunday morning and Vintage was full. They put us at the end of a taxi way on a row out in the South 40.

There should be quite a few leaving Thursday morning having stayed for the Wednesday night air show so I would think spots would open up. We're leaving Thursday morning. It's the South 40 but quite nice, and mostly quiet at night.

Very cool.  When are you planning to stop by the Garmin folks’ place?

I attended a couple of their Seminars today.  As usual they have a lot of discounts going plus an additional discount for attending one of their Seminars.

It looks like some of the technology of their autoland system is making its way over to our type of airplanes.  They now have a Smart Glide update to the a number of their products where if you have an engine failure the Garmin Autopilot will activate, pitch to best glide airspeed and calculate the best airport to go to and proceed there taking into account winds and a number of other things.  You still have to make the landing.  And it is a free update to the GTN Xi series GPS, the GI275, the G500 TXi / G3X Touch, the G5, and GFC 500.

I saw Trek Lawler and discussed a minor issue I'm having with the latest update to the G500 TXi.  He said he'd look into it.

They have upgraded their location tone fully air-conditioned.  It is huge.

I stopped by Bose and had them change out the ear cups on both my headsets.  I watched it being done.  This person really knew what he was doing.  It took him about 2 minutes per headset.  It would have taken me about one hour per headset.

Shirley loves Blimps and we watched it come in and circle AirVenture several times before setting down.

I am going to fly to my parents in Dallas on Wednesday after work then leave crack of dawn Thursday.  Hoping I can get in b/w airshow and arrival termination Thursday evening.  Hope you are right!  Else, I guess diversion is in my cards *cries*

I just got back from airventure 2021. If you are leaving from dallas check fbo for fuel availability. When i flew up on sunday there were 3 airports without fuel. Only one of them had notams stating that fact. I approached at 13:30 on sunday to everyone having to goto the most furthest point out on the fisk arrival. To make matters worst i got in behind a guy i swear was doing 90 mph instead of knots. I just rolled in 10d of flaps to stay out of a stall situation but he never sped up and it was a mooney as the fisk controller told him to rock his wings and just reverence me as second mooney follow first mooney. I didn’t get to rock my wings but that was probably a good thing as my nephews son was in the plane with us and the hot air and bumpy ride got him airplane sick. We landed by 14:00 and were parked on the north 40 by the weeks hanger. We could only stay til yesterday as my nephew had to be at work today so we left yesterday. It had been 40 years since i was last at oshkosh. I really wanted to stop by the mooney tent and say hi but ran out of time and was catering to my guest that wanted to see the airshow and pet a jet.
next year I’m definitely getting to one of the formation seminars so that i can participate in that type of arrival which would be way more fun than flaps 10 at 80 kts all the way in. Would be cool if they would allow coming up initial and pitch out to split the formation to land like the warbirds do.

I got through all 4 hangars in a couple of hours.  They spread things out very well, but Hangar C today was a madhouse with literally no social distancing.  I couldn't get out of there fast enough.

The Jeppesen customer service was outstanding, unlike its phone customer service.  I spent over an hour with one of their specialist while she went over various scenarios to get me the best price on what I wanted.  I wouldn't have been able to do it over the phone.  In the end I terminated the services I had, got credit for the unused portion, and then got all the new services I wanted--with a show discount to boot.  I went home and in about half an hour got everything updated to full US coverage; Garmin Pilot, Foreflight, JeppFD, and the Aera 760.

I went  over to EI and asked why I was constantly having to replace my EGT probes.  He suggested I don't use the quick recovery probes, but use the robust ones.  He said the response wasn't that much slower.  He just happened to have 6 of them on hand, and I scooped them up at quite a reduced price.

Bruce's Covers were there giving a 10% off show discount.  It was time to buy another one.

So much for not buying anything at this year's show...

Yes i guess the good news of catering to my nephew and my daughter is that they kept me from spending money at booths.

We had tornados on the PA/NJ border yesterday…

That weather was in the Chicago area the day before….

Very small amount of damage reported…

strong rain cells and concentrated lightning to go with that…

Nice thing about being a pilot… all the real time weather info in your pocket… and all the knowledge combined in your head…

It is much safer to be a pilot…  :)

For those that stayed later in the week was there a tornado forecast for oshkosh? Heard there was some bad weather pop up on the last days.

This storm system Wednesday night really cleared out the north 40.  Almost no activity filling in the vacant spots Thursday and Friday…I was told they won’t fill in until the south 40 is full.

Everyone should stop by Dynon booth and ask about the A/P certification for the Mooney.   If they have any samples in say a 10" screen pick one up for me.
Late reply, but I did ask this very question! The good news is that they own a J and will be developing the A/P... The bad news is it sounded like there are 4-5 airframes ahead of us right now. I believe all have been started and a couple are close to being finished. I'd expect mid next year at the earliest. Hopefully each successive airframe is easier than the one before it

The worse news is that they report thru the Seattle ACO, and they do not retain DER's to speed up the process. The Seattle ACO of course got a major black eye from Boeing and now find it easier to say no, ask for more data, slow-roll everything, etc. I have a friend at another company that goes thru the same office and grumbled to me in person when we visited this week, even with a mutual friend working at the FAA!
