I'm one of those people who likes the accuracy of a digitaly displayed SINGLE RPM value, to use RPM as an example. But I certainly prefer the analogue display of TREND. I don't see any reason why with today's technology we can't have an analogue tach with an LED board in it that will give us the digital value. We have these displayed in our panels right now in separate instruments! Why can't they be together? I don't think the EI does this exactly and certainly not the Horizon.  I'm waiting!

BTW I'm also one of those who thinks in metric! It's so logical!

The EI is close to this, but not exactly.  Any of the glass panel engine monitors will do it, though--the EI MVP-50, the Auracle, the JPI 930--you just have to pay for them.  I think the Moritz gauges installed by the factory on some Mooneys will also do this.

OK, so an email from both PSI labs and from Mooney confirm the correct recording speed for your tachometer is 2566 RPM.   Which means if you have a 2300 RPM unit in there, it is counting up hours 11.6% too fast.  Over 4,000 hours adds up to a pretty big discrepancy.  Could one make a detailed log entry, and correct the airframe, engine, and prop hours?

I just put a Horizon P-1000 I to my 1967 M20F. Nice !!

Now the propeller and engine work again ;) I was constantly showing 2550 rpm on take off. The previous mechanic installed a new prop governor to no avail. Now, I need to adjust my governor to avoid an over speed on takeoff because I found that the 2550 rpm is really 2830! I have not had time to do more than one flight test but when I get back home again in June I will do my best to put 30 hours on it and make a few adjustments.

The 2500 rpm tach removed had only 578 hours on it. It sure helps clean up the engine bay by removing that s-shaped tach cable. My mechanic also took the time to properly reroute my ignition leads so that they were not rubbing in any of the 15 identified spots.

I should have taken that tach out 3 years ago when I first bought the airplane...

From a manufacturer point of view digital is much cheaper to build. If you look at formula 1 you see where they have a mix but the tack is a digital display of lights that progress across the top of the panel or wheel that change color as revs get close to shift time also to when they drop to close to the bottom of the power curve. No way you have time to read the number of revs. I am old school love the look of an old panel but then I also prefer vinyl to digital

In Canada we use the tachometer for determining engine RPM. If it is mechanically driven it must be checked for accuracy during annual inspection due to the number of engine and propellers with restrictions, if the tachometer is electric it does not need testing.

Aircraft time is determine by use of an accurate time piece recording wheels up to wheels down time. We record our flights in a journey log book, hence our total time is lower than US airplane because we don't count taxi time toward total time.

A Hobbs meter is meaningless unless you're a flight school.

My M20F is also for sale which is looking better with the stronger US Dollar. I'll even deliver it :D

Is the RPM in metric or English units?

My tach reads in kilophrams per hour, not really sure how to convert that back to RPM. I'll have to order a new one when we complete the switch to metric time.

If you guys in the States would finally go metric, we could all speak the same language.
