N201mkturbo and I have been messing with my onboard weather radar since about September.  Replaced the RT box with an overhauled one.  The existing box was bad, had multiple issues. New box didn't fix it.  I read every manual I could find.  Couldn't figure it out.  I called a bunch of radar specialists.  I was not going to give up.

The radar was marked INOP shortly after the G500 system was installed.  so we started working backwards.  Everything seemed like it was working, but when the system was put in test, the antenna would tilt full down and not come up.  Radar tech said to check for 115v at the antenna. Hmm.  No 115v.  Let's review that log entry for the G500 install...  Hmm. What's this P-20A they removed just before the annual where they marked the radar INOP.  Hey, that's an inverter! For some unknown reason, the avionics shop removed the inverter. I guess they didn't understand or care that it was required for the radar.

So, long story short.  I found a new/used inverter.  Got it installed and ta-da! My 310 has working weather radar!!  Went up for a quick flight this afternoon to test it.  Unfortunately the precip we've been having had all moved out, but it's pretty cool to "see" a mountain through the clouds 40nm away.

The areas close in are nearby terrain, far out at the 40nm ring were peaks at or above my altitude.

Little by little, we're getting every system in order! Now we just need to work on a stabilization source. The antenna is stabilized, but was a replacement for a non stabilized antenna, so there's never been a gyro for it.

Next up is figuring out why the GI-106A doesn't get nav info from the 430W.

Way cool Bryce!

+ with 115v on board...

That Mr. Coffee project, for fresh coffee on board... is getting closer...

+1 for the added/extra skills of that mkturbo guy...   (aka Rich). :)

Go MS!

Unfortunately it's the wrong kind of 115 for the Mr. Coffee.  It's 400hz

9 amps per phase might be a little short for a coffee maker.  However an old school coffee maker with just an on off switch 400hz won't bother it .  It's all resistance inside to generate heat.

Would be interesting to see if the 3 phase is Y or delta connected and do they have a neutral?

I like how you added the 310 to the applicable models or you could have your 310 identify ad a DC-3.

3P, Delta, 208V...

Lesson learned when working on an industrial coffee maker... Lock, tag, and try.... (early years of my working career...)

It is only a single phase inverter with 1/2A at 115VAC. A little weak for a coffee maker.

There is plenty of room in the forward baggage area for a bigger inverter!

This would fit. Could I run it off 100LL?

We could tee it off of the Jantrol fuel line. As long as it isn’t permanently mounted it is no different than your CO detector...

There is room for a mini fridge and a toaster oven in there too!

No joke, I thought about getting one of those little RV center console refrigerator/cupholder things.  Would be great for summer flying.  Cold drinks anytime you want!

Cold drinks kind of limit your range!

Never mind, I got excited thinking it was in a Mooney. <_<

Apparently it was available as an option, although I have never seen or heard of one. Judging by the size of the dish that had to sit inside the leading edge of the wing, I can’t imagine it had very good range or resolution with 1980s technology.

Has anyone ever seen one of these factory installations? ABCE2358-50F9-4AB0-A0E4-3DBDE9447AC1.thumb.jpeg.49e0f0ea51ddf84b48569773ef0532a3.jpeg

If you go down a row of Mooneys...

Look for the one with the plastic leading edge section...  you can see it in the drawing part #52.

The radar was a good idea... but it was very limited in its skills...

Kind of high in maintenance as well...

There may be a thread around here by somebody trying to get one fixed...

Best regards,

I just looked at an ‘82 J with the fat wing section today. No evidence left in the cockpit and I haven’t found anything in the logs referencing the removal.
