Owen M20F Posted November 3, 2020 Report Posted November 3, 2020 Hey everyone, on my 67F model i seem to always get a bunch of oil coming out of the breather after a flight. I try to keep the oil around 6qts so i seem to always be adding a bit after every flight. Should i just stop adding and see if it stabilizes around 5-5.5? I’m in California so the extra oil is nice to keep the engine cool, engine has about 900 smoh and 60since a top overhaul with chrome cylinders. Going to see if i have an air oil separator installed tomorrow. Quote
carusoam Posted November 3, 2020 Report Posted November 3, 2020 Try it... Be aware there is a minimum amount of oil required for flight... Be able to read your oilT with enough accuracy while experimenting... In the end, you may find that you prefer the drips vs. the elevated oilTs... Or not... Either way, it’s an acceptable experiment... as your not going outside the rules or best practices... PP thoughts only, not a mechanic... Best regards, -a- Quote

The blow by pressure increases drips out the breather. Chrome cylinders just use more oil. How much per hour is it using? Mine is about a qt/5 hours. Personally, I still keep mine at 6 qts. You are right about the cooling. Also oil is cheap. 1 Quote

An air/oil separator will make it harder to see if there's a change in your oil loss, which is probably more important than how much you're actually losing. Also, I would think more oil doesn't help with cooling. I'd think it just gives you a buffer so it'd take longer to react to changes, but you're stable temps should be determined by your power, engine cooling and oil cooler. Quote
