It troubles me when I see these kind of accidents.  I know this route well.  Lots of flat desert terrain, dirt roads and dry lake beds.  The lesson I learn from this is first just try to find a survivable place to set the plane down.  If you have an engine out and trying to stretch it out to make an airport you might not know what terrain lies ahead.  In the news cast you can see a dry lake bed maybe 500 yards from the wreckage.  I wonder if they would have survived in a mooney airframe.

A friend of mine raced trucks with 2 of the people that died.  The article I read stated that they were over the desert but the plane crashed into a ravine.  Its unfortunate that trying to stretch it to the airport took 3 lives, especially when there was plenty of open ground to safely put the plane down.

Just awful.  The below happened at my home field yesterday.  Shows how evening hitting a parking garage can be survivable if you stay in control.   The pilot and his neice walked away without a scratch.   Despite what the press implies, the plane did not run out of fuel.  I helped tow it back to the airport and there is plenty of fuel sloshing around in both wings.
