MATTS875 Posted September 14, 2011 Report Posted September 14, 2011 Good evening everyone, I am about to start my IFR training and need the infamous 6 PACK setup. I need the directional gyro and the turn coordinator. Not sure which ones I need to get. Any help is appreciated. I have looked at the vacuum ones and the electric ones .I am lost. for a 1966 Mooney M20e
jetdriven Posted September 14, 2011 Report Posted September 14, 2011 Any 12V T/C should work. As far as DG goes, any vacuum 3" one will work also. Electric DG's are expensive. You have to decide if you want internally lit, or a heading bug. If you have an auopilot you need a special gyro for that with an output.
MATTS875 Posted September 14, 2011 Author Report Posted September 14, 2011 I do not have an autopilot so I guess the basic DG would be fine. I am going to call Hendricks mfg and find out how long it takes for a panel to be built. thanks a lot for the help.
danb35 Posted September 15, 2011 Report Posted September 15, 2011 What do you mean when you say that you need the 6 pack? Do you really not have a TC (or T& and a DG? You don't need the instruments in the standard 6-pack configuration to train for the instrument rating; I did it with the stock shotgun layout on mine (and then upgraded the panel afterward).
MATTS875 Posted September 15, 2011 Author Report Posted September 15, 2011 Dan, I have all the instruments just not in the right places. I have an original DG and Turn coordinator and going to replace them with more up to date ones. The DG is very small and not very easy to read and same with the turn coordinator being the same.after I get them I would like to set them up in the T configuration.
danb35 Posted September 15, 2011 Report Posted September 15, 2011 Ah, so you have the horizontal-style, backward-reading DG? Yeah, that's something I'd want to replace too. I wouldn't worry as much about the TC/T&B if yours works, but I guess that's a matter of preference. It's really two separate issues. Odds are your existing DG can be replaced with a more modern unit in the same place on your panel--that's what had been done with '48Q when I bought her. That will be relatively easy and cheap. Doing a new panel will involve a fair bit of time and/or money. I did it myself and had my A&P sign off on it, total cost of ~$300, but a few weekends of hassle taking care of everything. If you want to go this route, talk with your A&P in advance and make sure he's on board with it being a minor alteration.
