Has anyone dealt with this issue? I’ve move the sensor on the mag and wires several times, still no luck making it reliable. Makes me think I should wire it in with the factor tach.

Check the connector on the mag. I had a similar issue and found a pin on the JPI connector was a bit loose.

Here is the video showing it on my JPI 900:

If you have a EDM monitor Chris Marauder and Skates97 are spot on.

EI is different.

But I can’t see your video either and suggest always including in your description what kind of analyzer and if this is a new install with issues or just started having issue.

Cardinal,

for a useable way to share a video around here...

Use YouTube to post the video, then post the link here.

Anyone with an iPad or iPhone may have difficulty viewing otherwise... (lots of MSers at the coffee table) :)

Best regards,

Been there, done that, to the tune of several pointless billed hours from multiple mechanics and anxiety over my engine potentially overspeeding (it wasn't). I'd bet you have the same problem as I did. It will get worse untreated until the gauge won't display at all. Don't replace the JPI rpm sensor first. And for the love of God don't call JPI tech support. Just have your hangar elf find the cheap non-gold plated connector from the sensor to the JPI harness.  Disconnect it. Make sure all the pins are snug and well crimped. Maybe bend the metal edges of the female ends in a bit ever so slightly to make sure they grab the male ends firmly.  Drench all parts of the connector (male and female ends, and crimp connections) with Stabilant 22 - a liquid semiconductor contact enhancer that is worth every penny of the $60 bottle.  You can't use too much- I had to reapply a couple of times after using sparingly and the problem recurred. Put it back together and let it dry overnight. Maybe put a thin zip tie around the whole connector lengthwise. I bet it fixes your problem permanently!

Thank you sir. I knew it was a BS reading, the manifold pressure proofed that by being rock steady. When it 5,000 RPM’s and there prop was still on with no oil on the windshield, I was still good. Oil change is 2 hours away and I’ll be on it. Your right about JPI tech support, I was chasing my tail, that’s why I moved the sensor and the wire routing several times. Why I didn’t check the Molex connectors, no idea, that will teach me.

JPI tech service Has been known to sell a few EI devices...? :)

Really, EI tech services has been highly regarded around MS for many years... JPI just doesn’t shine in this area...
