BDPetersen Posted January 10, 2018 Report Share Posted January 10, 2018 In an attempt to add heading info to my G5 AI, we are attempting to install the magnetometer. Alas, in doing the magnetic interference test all went well until the old Grimes coffee grinder beacon was turned on. The reasonable solution seemed to be swapping it for a solid state LED beacon. Unfortunately, it emits magnetic interference when it flashes. The power supply wire is shielded and the shield is grounded. I’m putting this out there in case any “techies” have any suggestions. Ferrite bead? If it’s coming up the power line Into the DC bus a large electrolytic capacitor on the +12v lead at the device and the other side to ground helps. N601RX Posted January 10, 2018 Report Share Posted January 10, 2018 Make sure the shield is only grounded at one end of the cable. Don't bundle the magnetometer wire with or near any other wires or coax. Wrapping the power lead to the light around split ferrit core might help. If it's still causing problems one of these or similar will likely fix the problem. BDPetersen Posted January 10, 2018 Author Report Share Posted January 10, 2018 Good news, I think. Beacon had been grounded to adjacent airframe. A local airport EE ( who knew?) suggested running the ground back to the battery. That worked! At least in a jury rigged fashion.
