I spend all my money on these stupid airplanes, can't afford the cars. Chevy will have to be good enough. The solar, I'd buy from sunpower, their panels are a little better quality and efficiency I think. Solarcity's warranty isn't really all that good, and doesn't cover power output. Quote

Slightly less expensive - can't the fighter jets do 20,000fpm (for a little while...with a running start...vs standing start for the Saturn V). Job are you here? So, can anyone figure out how many horsepower that is, and how does it compare to a 747? 1 Quote
Mooney1 Posted October 26, 2017 Report Posted October 26, 2017 The 747 -200/300 was 100k lbs of thrust total (25k per engine). Could easily move out of its own way empty, but heavy just lumbered along. Quote
jetdriven Posted October 26, 2017 Report Posted October 26, 2017 (edited) 50K per engine. the Jt9D-7RG2 was 54K each. Light, you're talking about a 400K airplane with 216K of thrust. Climb to 350 in 11 minutes. Edited October 26, 2017 by jetdriven 1 Quote

The cars are reputed to ride nicely and handle well, and certainly accelerate quickly with a recent charge. But I won't buy any vehicle that I can't get in and drive from Alabama [or wherever I happen to live at the time] to wherever I want to go, which could be the grocery store or Washington, DC, or the Black Hills. I make fewer long drives since buying the Mooney, but sometimes it isn't the right way to travel to where I want or need to go. I have a lifetime of 10-12 hour days in a car, nothing electric on the market will do that right now [500+ road miles, one or two quick stops for gas & food]. Quote
Yetti Posted October 26, 2017 Report Posted October 26, 2017 F1 Engine producing 55,000 brake horsepower (41 MW) I don't think the Lycoming is brake horsepower... Tractors are done in brake horsepower Quote

With a single 45 minute stop at a supercharger a Tesla P100D will do it and a Model 3 Long Range will do it easily with an even shorter battery stop. 2 Quote

Anything that can drain a swimming pool in 30 seconds need that kind of power. Anything with a shaft can be hooked to a dyno to measure horsepower. Edited October 26, 2017 by jetdriven Quote
aviatoreb Posted October 26, 2017 Report Posted October 26, 2017 Isn't there a fighter pilot on here? Someone? I bet an F16 can get to 40k pretty quick on after burners, enough to embarrass a poky-ol 747 driver. Quote
peevee Posted October 26, 2017 Report Posted October 26, 2017 I think there's a few, retired and active. Quote

Ok for the retired and active military fighter pilots: 1) What is the time to climb to 40,000ft from a stop on the runway. Bonus question open to all. 2) What is the average airspeed of an unladen African swallow. Quote

Guitarmaster Posted October 27, 2017 Report Posted October 27, 2017 African swallows fly at a higher TAS due to the hot air. Typically about 27.47 MPH. Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk Quote

I'll have to research #1; may see a retired F4 / F15 pilot at the airport, if not I have one of his books that may record it. Althiugh I think he usually went to 35,000.
