Hello all,

I recently purchased a '82 M20J.  The previous owner threw away the sun visors as he thought they were more trouble than they were worth, however, the rods are still there.  I have some visors that I made up from Lexan but I'm not sure what kind of mounting hardware was used.  Would anybody be willing to take a picture of their sun visor assemblies?  My email is: bnicolette@yahoo.com.  I was thinking about just replacing them with the LASAR brand sometime, but would like to give this a shot before I spend $300 on sun visors.

Thank you all.

See attached pictures. You can make the strap from just a piece of plastic or aluminum. Mine crack 2 years ago and the visor was always falling down. I made new straps and now it holds up even under turbulence.

Jose,

Thank you so much for taking the time to put the pictures up.  What a great idea!!  Enough to hold them still but yet functional to be able to move them back to a stow position.  Perfect!!!  I really appreciate the help!

You can get ventlab oxygen supply tubing and 4 brass barrel bolts (brushed finish preferable) at any hardware store. Discard the "male" portion of the barrel bolt. cut four pieces of tubing wide enough and cover the sunvisor tube with it, then simply bolt in the "female" portion of the barrel bolt right over the tubing. Works and looks better than original plastic holder in my opinion. All you need to worry about is getting the right size. Pictures tomorrow...

Just a thought. I know they're expensive, but the Rosen sun visors for the Mooney are simply awesome and much better than anything you could do with the original rods. I bought my plane with the Rosen's already installed, but there's nothing like them for really cutting the glare. I seldom wear sunglasses because I have problems with my eyes adjusting to see the panel through dark lenses, but if it's really bright or hazy I can just lower the Rosen visor and it neatly fills up the viewing area let still lets me see everything perfectly.

Not on the visor topic, but responding to the comment about eyes adjusting between the panel and outside.  I solved that problem with some RayBan Aviators, custom made.  The uppers are dark, the lower part is clear.  The upper have a little prescription for distance, and the lower part has a reading magnification for seeing the panel and reading charts.  Work great for old eyes.

I also have the Rosens.  They are great also.  Need to periodically tighten the screw that holds them to the overhead though, or they rotate as they please.

Jose,

I have both the visors and the cap....

Do you put your headset over the cap?

For comfort with my old DCs, the cap is on top of the headset.....(no pictures allowed!)

In winter the ball cap is a requirement, keeps the shiney spot on my head warm from the ever-present chlly air flowing through the top of the cabin.  Can't do that with visors....

Yeah, I've looked high and low for a nice pair of gradient sunglasses. I tested the Ray Bans in the store, and the gradient with light-brown might work. What I'm really looking for is something like that with a lighter amber color. I have a pair from PeakVision that I use on the golf course and the lenses are perfect, with dark amber on top and light amber below, but they only make the shield-type frames which are too bulky to form a tight seal with my Zulu headset. The search continues...
