(a) What should I use to replace radio cowling screws? I have a couple with stripped heads.

(b) Is replacing the captive screws on the engine cowling easy? What part(s)? (Several have rusty heads.)

For a '66 M20E. Thanks! (P.S. I'll do it, if necessary, under the supervision of my local A&P...)

Stainless screw kit for a Mooney is the place to start.  You might want to buy some plastic washers to go under them.   No A&P required.  Inspection port R&R is covered under preventive maintenance section.  As is adding brake fluid which is under one of the radio inspection panels.   Might as well get a gallon of 5606 brake fluid

Topped off the brakes when I had the flaps fixed on Thursday, and don't have a "job box" at my tie-down yet, but, wilco!

This? http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/hapages/exterwasherkit.php

"Mooney    M20E/G (up to 1976)    -    04-02830    $69.85"

Doesn't look like it has the "captured" cowling screws though? Like these: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/categories/aircraft_parts/ap/menus/ha/hardware_fasteners.html

Chris, you may want to confirm which fastener locations...

There were screws for the access panels for the backside of the radios...

There were camlocks for the cowl top. These camlocks were not stainless originally and had a tendency to get routed out rust layer after rust layer.

old fuzzy memories of a 65C...

Best regards,

sorry   misread which screws    if they are on the panels for access to back of instrument panel just go into any fbo and they will probably give you what you need,  a full screw kit is wayyyy too many screws

Kim D on the field has a lot of hardware. Poke your head in the parts room and ask for Kim or Shane. Show them what you have and have, grab a good handful and leave $10 cash. Good people.

Both. Some of the radio access panel screw heads are stripped / stripping.

Also, those rusty camlocks. I edited my post earlier but it doesn't seem to have stuck. I found them on Aircraft Spruce: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/sb-mooney-cwl-kit.php

(Hopefully that's not $300 per cam lock...?!)

On my 67'C radio access cowl  (near the firewall)  had a mixture of fasteners such as  tinnerman nuts, speed nuts,  and nut plates, sheet  metal  and machined screws some varied  in size  over the years.   which I never understood why Mooney did that.  I have since changed them all to #8 nut plates . and no longer having worry about  people who are trying to help you by taking  a sheet metal screw putting it into a nut plate or  take a machined thread #8 screw into a speed nut fastener.  In the case on my '67C three (per side) lower had  speed nuts  for #8 sheet metal screws with same spacing as standard nut plate. so that was no  brainier drill them out replaced them #8 nut plates.  The top section between firewall and  base of the center line  of the  front windshield, where  are 6  sheet metal screws that  was little more difficult.  So I  decided to remove the channel piece that goes between the Firewall and base of windshield  . I took it home put in #8 nut plates reinstalled  channel piece. The cowl seals better and just better all way around.   If  you are talking  the radio access panel near the  tail section on the left side.  I guess I try an aircraft  salvage  yard or Ebay then have auto body place match your paint scheme and paint for you.

Hope this helps,
