PMcClure Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 I am planning to change my donuts on the main gear at next Annual (early December). Any recommendations on where to purchase these? Also, I recall that there was a loaner tool available. Can someone point me to the generous owner? Quote
Brandontwalker Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 Lasar was competitive on the price last I checked. I was quoted $111.87 each back in July. Not sure about the loaner tool though. Quote
KSMooniac Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 hangartoolbox has a rental program for tools like this, but the owner is dealing with some health issue currently and not running the business. Hopefully he recovers soon and can continue providing a good service. Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 You can use mine if you come out here. I loaned my nose gear tool to a Mooney owner two years ago and I still don't have it back. So I'm not loaning them out any more. I'll have to hunt it down one of these days. Quote
PMcClure Posted September 29, 2015 Author Report Posted September 29, 2015 $111.87 - I was quoted the same from Laser (took them about 10 minutes to get back to me!!). If anyone has a loaner tool, please let me know. 8 disk are all that are needed for the mains? No bushings or washers to replace at the same time? Quote
Andy95W Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 8 disk are all that are needed for the mains? No bushings or washers to replace at the same time? 8 discs are all you need, and you won't even need the tool for the main gear, only the nose gear needs it. The weight of the airplane is all that is needed to compress the discs, especially if you fill it with fuel first. I helped a friend change out his main gear last month on his Ovation. It takes about an hour each if you work well together. The only additional thing to consider would be if you chose to replace the bolt and nut that goes at the top of the stack of biscuits. Ask LASAR when you order the discs. 1 Quote
StevenL757 Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 Agree on LASAR. I just had mine done in June and the tool was only required for the nose gear. No other parts needed...just order Qty. 8 if you're doing the mains, Qty. 11 if all three. 1 Quote
Cervelorod Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 I think you could do the front without the tool also. Undo the top bolt whilst on the ground. Use your cherry picker to lift the nose off the ground, dissemble as needed to get to the donut stack, replace donuts, put all back together, then let the front down and re-install the collar and bolt. Note, I haven't done this myself to replace discs, but I did remove the collar several times in troubleshooting my darting off the runway issue... I used a ratchet strap to compress it slightly to get the bolt in after I added the SB shim. Rod Quote
LANCECASPER Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 Skygeek has them for 106.72. http://www.skygeek.com/j11968-14.html?utm_source=transactional&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Transactional%2BEmails%2BItems Aircraft Spruce has them for $109.75 but with a call they should match Skygeek and give you free shipping. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/search/search.php?s=J11968-14 Quote
LANCECASPER Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 Also you might contact Virginia Aviation - they have them for sale on Ebay for 100.95 but only show one left - I'm sure they can get more. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mooney-Shock-Discs-PN-530021-000-/261252017115?hash=item3cd3d56bdb Quote
PMcClure Posted September 30, 2015 Author Report Posted September 30, 2015 Laser Quoted part number 530021-000 compared to J11968-14 above. Any difference? Quote
LANCECASPER Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 Probably Mooney's part number vs. Lord's who makes them Quote
PMcClure Posted November 16, 2015 Author Report Posted November 16, 2015 Laser rents the tool for $50 with a $500 deposit. I got mixed reviews if the tool was needed or not. But for $50, I decided to have it there in case. FYI - Paul 1 Quote
