1964-M20E Posted June 16, 2015 Report Posted June 16, 2015 I may be dead wrong, but I was under the impression that Dawley virtually gave a new exhaust system, merely using something like a single part, so they could call it an overhaul, rather than selling new exhaust systems. I think you are correct when I replace mine the reused the exhaust shroud. Quote
outermarker Posted August 27, 2017 Report Posted August 27, 2017 I too need to replace the exhaust systems. Any updates on this topic? Quote
Mooneymite Posted August 27, 2017 Report Posted August 27, 2017 I recently replaced the entire exhaust system on my C..... I ended up ordering one "off the shelf" from Knisely Welding (800) 522-6990. Just under $2200. A rebuild might have been a bit cheaper, but Knisely shipped it right away. The only issue was the heater shroud did not fit due to variations in Mooney exhaust systems. Knisely took care of it, but I had to pay the return shipping. Once that was taken care of, the system fit perfectly and has been trouble free. Quote
MyNameIsNobody Posted August 29, 2017 Report Posted August 29, 2017 So what about getting an exhaust that doesn't almost go straight down from the fuselage? I want one that has a more straight back rake like for the 201. How do you communicate/get that conversion on an M 20E stock exhaust? How difficult/who would do such a cut and weld? Mine was overhauled by Dawley. Still working fine. Regret not having communicated the change when ordered. Quote
Raptor05121 Posted August 29, 2017 Report Posted August 29, 2017 My system was shot. Sent it off to Aerospace Welding Minneapolis way back in June. Got a quote for well over $2,000 to rebuild the entire system. Shrouds are $447 with a $75 core, and mufflers are $766 with a $250 core, risers are $200 each I've checked my logbook and my system has been to them two times in the past 10 years for overhaul (mind you the rebuild them entirely new and just keep the dataplate to consider it an "overhaul"). I talked to two owners on here with systems from AWI and they are only a few years old with fatigue, cracking, or splitting already occurring. I find it shocking that these systems are not lasting very long. Its very thin stainless steel. I cannot believe I can get a custom header-back exhaust put on my truck for $350 but something the size of a 2L bottle costs 10x that much. Quote

What happens when you can't use economy of scale. Everything is a special order made by hand. My car is a Toyota MR2 Spyder. Toyota made very, very few of them, yet I think hey made my MR2 Syders than Mooney made airplanes. Still, thanks for posting up on that. If or when my time comes I'll know to avoid those guys. Quote

It is probably the case that a Powerflow Systems exhaust at twice the cost is a bargain.I went with the PFS over 5 years ago when my stock exhaust failed. I just the headers off to r&r the fuel injection servo. I took advantage of the opportunity to inspect and to apply anti seize to the slip joints. It is as good as new. The ss is significantly heavier gauge and the design is very efficient. https://www.powerflowsystems.com/products.php?cat_id=5&pid=46 Quote
