bksmith30 Posted November 13, 2014 Author Report Posted November 13, 2014 How 'firm' should the push/pull on the prop control be? On my E, I have to use both hands when cycling it during the run-up. It's easily adjustable using the vernier while in flight but when pushing the vernier release in and just pulling the control out it's extremely stiff. Does anyone know what the lubrication schedule (if any) is for that cable? I would think that it's probably something like graphite down the cable where I can or perhaps silicone. After thinking about it, that is how mine was, then from sitting a month while doing maintenance, it wouldn't move at all even with turning the knob. You will probably have to replace it soon. Quote
N601RX Posted November 13, 2014 Report Posted November 13, 2014 I needed a new throttle cable about a month ago. McFarland wanted $375 to duplicate my old one and I needed to ship my old one in for them to duplicate. Maxwell sold me a new one for $386 and shipped it out the same day. Quote
bonal Posted November 13, 2014 Report Posted November 13, 2014 These old aircraft need lots of attention and they need regular exercise. Glad you found the problem hope the work to replace goes easy. Take notes on the process as I'm sure others will benefit from your experience. Quote

I called Maxwell yesterday, they didn't have one. Thank for the tip though. Quote

It wasn't as bad as I thought to remove it, though after I wish I removed my radios and tray for better access. I removed them after the fact so the installation would be easier. Hopefully get it ordered today and get it here next week with AP here to install. 1 Quote
bksmith30 Posted November 13, 2014 Author Report Posted November 13, 2014 Just ordered a new prop cable from McFarlane out of Kansas, spoke with TIm. They are going to make me a new one and should ship out tomorrow, price is $250 plus shipping. Not bad. 2 Quote
KSMooniac Posted November 13, 2014 Report Posted November 13, 2014 I sent my J prop and mixture cables to them to get them duplicated, and had a new set the next day. 1 Quote
ryoder Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 Will that come with a new knob or just the cable? Just ordered a new prop cable from McFarlane out of Kansas, spoke with TIm. They are going to make me a new one and should ship out tomorrow, price is $250 plus shipping. Not bad. Quote
KSMooniac Posted November 14, 2014 Report Posted November 14, 2014 McFarlane builds the entire cable assembly, from pilot knob to the threaded end for the attachment on the engine side. 1 Quote
bksmith30 Posted December 6, 2014 Author Report Posted December 6, 2014 I apologize for the late update. The new cable is installed and works great! So much better than the old one, works very smooth!! 1 Quote

Hank Posted December 13, 2014 Report Posted December 13, 2014 I'm off to McFarlane now for a new carb heat cable. It moved part way and seized. My first (unknowing) takeoff was surprising, with 400 fpm max climb rate over the asphalt. Before my next flight I manually closed it, and takeoff was the same. Phone and text conversations with my old mechanic got it all the way closed, and takeoff and climb was normal, but it vibrated open around 1000' agl and climb dropped back to 300 fpm. Official diagnosis is bad cable rather than disconnect, break or slip at the control end, since the engine end was right. Quote
