yvesg Posted July 11, 2014 Report Posted July 11, 2014 Some tough weather flying today. Who knows what FU means!? In French, smoke is called "fumée", the FU comes from there. So Mike did you meet Joe, Mikey et al? Yves Quote
Marauder Posted July 11, 2014 Report Posted July 11, 2014 Be careful up there Mike. Are you going to keep tracking north? The good news is the further north you go the more your pants are going to fit in with the locals. I have it from a good source (one of his parrots) that he is headed to the North Pole to prove once and for all that reindeer run LOP. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
BorealOne Posted July 11, 2014 Report Posted July 11, 2014 As Yves notes, FU is smoke. We've got lots of it here in YZF. Plenty o' wildfires burning. Visibility has been so low at times that the airport has been IFR or SVFR only. http://www.nwtfire.com/cms/nwt-fire-map You going to make Yellowknife in time for the airshow tomorrow? Send me a PM - maybe we can meet up! Larry Quote
BorealOne Posted July 11, 2014 Report Posted July 11, 2014 Sticking with the fire theme for a moment - check out: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2014/07/10/northwest-territories-fires-photos-nwt_n_5574337.html?utm_hp_ref=mostpopular Wicked pictures of what we are dealing with up North this summer. 201er Posted July 12, 2014 Author Report Posted July 12, 2014 Thanks Larry, we caught the preshow today and continued on to Cambridge Bay. Discovered IFR in Class G, flying true rather than magnetic, and pumping your own gas. We made it north of the Arctic circle today. Some really intense flying! Quote
carusoam Posted July 12, 2014 Report Posted July 12, 2014 How's the runway there? They said they spent a few bucks paving it before you arrived. You're not in Jersey anymore! cycb airport Cambridge Bay Airport is located at Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, Canada, and is operated by the government of Nunavut. In December 2005 the Government of Nunavut announced that they would spend $18 million to pave the runway. Now you just need to add landing on gravel, shooing caribou off the runway before landing, and 'emergency off-field maintenance procedures' and we'll make you an honourary Ice Pilot. Where to from Cambridge Bay? Quote

Marauder Posted July 12, 2014 Report Posted July 12, 2014 Heck Mike, why not just go over the North Pole? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
yvesg Posted July 12, 2014 Report Posted July 12, 2014 Who wants to bet on the fuel price up there? I bet it is at least $3 a littre ($12 a gallon) Yves Quote
ArtVandelay Posted July 12, 2014 Report Posted July 12, 2014 Cambridge Bay gravel-plane.jpg fueling.jpg are you double filtering?? Quote
BorealOne Posted July 12, 2014 Report Posted July 12, 2014 I've paid anywhere from $400-600 per drum, depending on supply and demand. I'm guessing Cambridge is at least that. Quote
201er Posted July 13, 2014 Author Report Posted July 13, 2014 Cambridge Bay to Baker Lake flight. 20 knot crosswind gravel landing after a GPS approach. Fancy shmancy pump from barrel this time. $850 barrel of gas. How do you like my Mooney Tundra tires? Quote
BorealOne Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 Looks like a nice runway to me...as you know, they land 737s and Dash 8's on it. You win the new 'highest price to fill a Mooney' prize! Make sure you check the bolts that secure your inner gear doors on pre-flight. Gravel has a way of loosening them. Quote
BorealOne Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 And watch out for those cute white bears in Churchill...I hear they like parrots! Quote
Seth Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 Mike- What an adventure! As quoted in an article about flying north, if you see a polar bear, and then you don't, proceed with extreme caution and be warned - the bear is stalking you. If you are flying to truly remote locations I hope your survival gear includes a rifle despite what laws that may break. Really enjoy following your progress!! -Seth Quote

Guest Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 Not to worry about our polar bears. They are of the bilingual pot smoking variety, who are laid back and love tourists! Clarence Quote
aviatoreb Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 I've paid anywhere from $400-600 per drum, depending on supply and demand. I'm guessing Cambridge is at least that. How does that work/cost? Do you need to buy the whole drum whether you use it all or not? Do you need to pre order a drum or something? How many gallons in a drum so how much do you end up paying per gallon? Quote
yvesg Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 Check this Erik: http://polarpilots.ca/index.php/flight-planning-and-weather/59-newadds/131-cyfb-no-100ll-avgas It is 54 US gallons. Yves Quote
yvesg Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 Mike, what is your plan from Churchill? Looks like your direct path to New York will bring you around here. Yves Quote
