DonMuncy Posted March 30, 2014 Report Posted March 30, 2014 I need some help. About 10 years ago, I created a model of a generic Mooney etched in a crystal block. You can see photos in my gallery. They really look nicer than the photos. (I found it difficult to photograph a crystal cube) When I conceived this idea, I was going to make a lot of money selling them. As it turned out I sold a few at just about break even prices and in the last 9 or 10 years have taken a few to the MAPA convention every year and donated them for door prizes. When I called my supplier a few days ago, I found they have gone out of business. I have located a place that will make more for me, but in order to do so, they need a computer file for the 3D image of the plane, either in DXF, STL, IGS or MAX format. When I originally did the deal, I found a guy who had such a file, but he sent it directly to my manufacturer and I don’t have a copy. I have tried, but can not contact him. Does anyone have any idea of how to get a lead on how to come up with something like this. I would like to get some to take to the MAPA convention again. Any help appreciated.
N601RX Posted March 30, 2014 Report Posted March 30, 2014 Mooney might share the top level model with all the internals left out if they knew what it was for, assuming they have a 3D model. Another option would be send one of the wood models somewhere and have it scanned.
DonMuncy Posted March 30, 2014 Author Report Posted March 30, 2014 Thanks, If it should come to that, how would one find someone to scan it.
N601RX Posted March 30, 2014 Report Posted March 30, 2014 There are companies online that will do it. We have a couple of 3D printers at work, but no scanner. Someone on here might have access to one. http://store.makerbot.com/digitizer?gclid=COnz8YSoub0CFSdn7Aod1WsAQw
DonMuncy Posted March 30, 2014 Author Report Posted March 30, 2014 With no more than a smattering of logic, it would seem to me that a proper program should be able to take three views of a Mooney and generate a 3D model.
tomn Posted March 30, 2014 Report Posted March 30, 2014 Don, let me know if you find someone with a 3d model but not in a usable format. We have Solidworks at the office and can convert to most format types. I'd love to have a solid model of a Mooney or even a regular 2d drawing if anyone has one. Tom
DonMuncy Posted March 30, 2014 Author Report Posted March 30, 2014 Thanks Tom. I have not got one in any form yet, but still looking.
MooneyMitch Posted March 31, 2014 Report Posted March 31, 2014 We own one of these beauties, thanks to the generosity of Don. I will say it is magical, especially in a low light setting. Love it! 1
DonMuncy Posted March 31, 2014 Author Report Posted March 31, 2014 Tom, I have managed to find and get the data for a 3D model. It has some very minor things which I would like to remove from the image, and I am not smart enough to manipulate it myself. I am very much afraid the guys who are going to manufacture the blocks, will not be able to make the changes, as they are not aviators and the stuff I want tweaked defy description to a non pilot. Do you have anyone who might be able to do this. It is probably about a 10 minute job to someone who works with 3D graphics. I will be glad to take this off forum, by PM, email or phone. muncy-d@hotmail.com 214 207-6744 Thanks
DonMuncy Posted June 2, 2014 Author Report Posted June 2, 2014 Thanks again to all who offered help. After great effort, I got my supply going again. Aviatoreb, I remember you were interested in one. I am sending you a PM.
PLN_FXR Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 How expensive, Don? I may need to give myself a Father's Day present
Mcstealth Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 I have a beautiful wood model. If needed to scan.
DonMuncy Posted June 3, 2014 Author Report Posted June 3, 2014 McStealth, I found a 3-d model. Thanks anyway. PLN FXR, $40.
