I was wondering what you pay each year in property taxes/registration fees. This topic was touched briefly, but didn't quite answer my question. When I had my Cherokee, I paid property taxes based on where it was on 1 January. I didn't play any games and try to fly the airplane around. The county knew who was based at the airport and wanted its piece.


Here is the question. How much do you pay each year? Is it based on the value of the airplane? Does it go up or down annually?

Penny a pound based on gross weight $25.75 a year. Comes with a nice state chart and airport guide,  god I love Michigan after paying $600+ a year to the state of Karlifornia for 20+ years and that did'nt even come with a thank you.

Texas personal use airplanes are not subject to property tax.


 


Revenue producing airplanes are subject to property taxes if they are in service for business on January 1, but the county agreed with me on the phone that based on the literature they gave me, it's taxable based on book value that I turn into to the IRS.  Here in about 3 years it will be worth $0 to them.  Expect to pay about 3% of your aircraft's value in Texas every year.


 


Why we have to pay to own stuff I don't know.  Bringing the airplane to this county did not in any way affect the school system, the local community college, the water pipes, etc.

Colorado charges "use" tax when you buy. After that there is no tax assessment at all.

In KS, personal use planes older than 30 years are exempt from property tax...and fortunately my J turned 30 the year I bought it!  I did have to pay sales tax though since I bought from an FBO.  :(  I think casual sales between individuals do not trigger sales tax here.

Here's the New Mexico registration information.


          "The registration fee is based on the maximum gross takeoff weight of the aircraft and is calculated as follows: aircraft manufactured in 2010-2009, $0.02 per lb.; 2008, $0.0175 per lb.; 2007, $0.0150 per lb.; 2006, $0.0125 per lb.; 2005 and older, $0.01 per lb. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR VERIFYING YOUR AIRCRAFT’S CORRECT MAXIMUM GROSS TAKEOFF WEIGHT. There is a flat $10.00 registration fee for balloons. There is a flat $5.00 fee for change of ownership. Registration fees are in lieu of all other state and local property taxes assessed on aircraft."


Mine's an '80, so my annual fee is $27.40.

I don't have a plane yet, but I looked into what it's going to cost me. For me, it depends on where I base it. At Oakland, the rate is 1.3459 percent of the assested value and at Hayward it is 1.07 percent. So a big savings to go to Hayward, but it's further away from my house and I don't know yet if there are any hangers there. I have found two at Oakland.

In Iowa I pay no annual property tax for my '66 Mooney.  Registration is about $35/year.  There was a one time state sales tax with the purchase.  Earth Quakes, mud slides, wild fires...and high airplane taxes, OUCH it can hurt to live in California...but I have heard there are some perks tooCool

Boy, I take the exemption!  Displaying isn't that hard when you consider that you can display at any airport day, fly-in, or open house that is available to the general public.  For example, when I went to Minter on Saturday, I received a slip for display.  I am able to sign the forms for any Ambassador events you come to.


Our local airport, Santa Maria, CA offers one Saturday a month where you can display at the museum of flight. I believe that LVK-Livermore also does this.


I have never had a problem with making the days when you consider fly-ins and display days.


Just my two cents...which are mine because I take the historical exemption!
