Working on a M20K that has a updated instrument panel that no longer needs the hump. The owner says a J glareshield will fit on it. Looking at the Ashby 1977-1983 glareshield. Anyone know if it will fit? Don't want to waste his money. TIA

The Ashby glare shield should be considered an inner framework for a nice upholstery job. It is a sturdy piece of fiberglass, but it’s kind of ugly as it comes.

What did you not like about the Ashby?

Some years ago, my glareshield was in horrible shape and was a glaring eye sore after upgrading the rest of the interior with Hector. I checked out the Ashby and thought it was big downgrade in appearance and functionality. I was about to search for a salvage glareshield but Hector surprised me resurrecting my old one to better than new. Hector sometimes has some used ones if yours can’t be resurrected. Thanks Im looking at ashby. I have used before. Question I am asking is will a J model fit a K model that no longer has the hump.

I have an Ashby glare shield on my J. It fits OK. You will have to mount the lights and I had mine covered in leather at an upholstery shop. It needed a little trimming. It is fairly thick fiberglass, so it will never fall apart like the original plastic.

How is the 231 different than the 201 at the glare shield ? Is the Ashby covered ? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The Ashby shield would be a good base for someone who was good with fiberglass to use to modify to fit the 231. It will last forever. It is sturdy as hell. I have one. It doesn’t fit as good as the original, but when the Mooney is rusting away in some salvage yard in the next century, the glare shield will still be good.

Has anybody installed an Ashby glareshield ? just curious about the quality , also is it a replacement , or a cover for an existing glare shield , My J is missing the glareshield....
-
Your panel shape looks just like mine. It looks like you have the stock windshield. I have an Ashby glare shield. It makes a good base to build a good glare shield. Like all things Aviation I had to trim it to fit. If you get one, you will have to shorten it quite a bit. You will have to make your own pocket for the lighting. When you get it the way you want it, take it to a good upholsterer and cover it with vinyl or leather. I made the lighting pocket out of upholstery foam. The only challenge I’ve had is finding adhesive that will not melt in the Arizona heat.

One of these things is not like the other...a glareshield question.

What about an Ashby glareshield from Spruce? Clarence -
I think the glareshield was in the sun for many years before getting repaired and eventually covered in vinyl. The plane is a 1979 M20J. New glareshield from Mooney is over $3000, is a special order, and takes several weeks cuz Mooney has to fabricate them when odered (non-stocking item). Ashby won't work cuz my glareshield has the bump for the annunciator, and Ashby doesn't have the bumped up section for the annunciator I called a salvage place in Tennessee and LASAR. They didn't have used or new glareshields. I don't know any other salvage place for M20Js. Yes, the underside section is the light brow and the brow extends back to form the stiffener ribs. The brow and stiffeners are one formed piece of ABS plastic.

Mold pattern for a new glareshield
N201MKTurbo replied to BrianW's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I have an Ashby glare shield in my plane. It took quite a bit of customizing to get it to fit. I built new light mounts and built up the underside from fireproof upholstery foam. I had the whole thing covered in leather by an aircraft upholstery shop. It came out pretty good looking and strong as can be. I don't think it will fit your year with the high spot for the annunciator lights. -
I ended up purchasing the '76 Ranger that I posted basing in Columbus Ohio on an earlier thread. In process of replacing all the pucks now, in March it goes to Weep No More for both tanks. I realize this subject has been covered in the past, I researched thread history, but I didn't really get a clear idea of folks' results. This Ranger has the 201 windshield but uses the original glareshield that does not extend fully to the windshield, and it is in rough shape. That area is covered by two different materials, one soft and the other plastic. Ideally I would like to find an early J glare shield that could be sent down to Hector for recovering. So far no luck calling all the salvage yards, and Hector said he rarely sees them come up anymore. My desire is one piece to cover everything under the windshield. The picture of the Ashby piece for the 201 does not give me an idea of length. Have folks installed this with long term success? I know it will require modification, is it worth the effort for a starting point or better to be patient on a used 201 shield turning up? Appreciate help in advance.

https://mooneyspace.com/search/?q=Ashby glare shield&sortby=relevancy&search_and_or=and Form and function of all glare shields seems to have changed over time... a lot. Jake, FYI you can edit the title of the thread you created.... if you want. Best regards, -a-

Chances are any 201 glareshield you find will need extensive repair. A J owner I know replaced his J’s glareshield with an Ashby. He spent a fair amount of time on the fit before it was covered. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

I followed the advice on this post and called Hector at Aero Comfort. He sounded like a nice guy. He asked me to send him pictures of my glareshield and said that it's very rare that he sees one that's damaged beyond repair. I sent him the pics, and in about 2 hours I got a rather lengthy apologetic email back saying that I indeed, had one of those rare glareshields that was damaged beyond repair. So, does anyone have any direct experience with Ashby replacement glareshields? And how much "fitting" they actually require? Thanks

That appears to be the Ashby referenced above. My glareshield cover was in bad shape when I bought the plane and the opening was covered with painted real-estate sign that had been somewhat cut to fit. I molded a piece of fiberglass to fit, painted it flat black and attached with thin Velcro. Overall, it looks far better than it did.

Not sure what year the ventilation ports got added. Mooney significantly improved the midbody glareshield sometime in the early 80's, not sure if the earliest K's had it but not the earliest J. Another possibility is your OEM glareshield got replaced by an inexpensive aftermarket called the Ashby which is sold by Spruce. ( http://www.aircraftglareshield.com/Mooney_M20.htm ) if you had an old style they weren't too bad of a replacement. But frankly compared to a modern one I looked at it a downgrade and was going to stick to factory if mine wasn't repairable. But new factory replacements are quite expensive.

I have an Ashby glare-shield for a 201 which I don't need. I was going to fit it to my E model, but sold the plane. Clarence
