Has anyone had a complete engine failure ?
Marauder replied to spokewrench's topic in General Mooney Talk
You had me! I thought your post was a direct answer to the OP's question whether anyone had an engine failure. I read your answer as (yes) Yesterday from my home airport. Glad they made it... -
I got to dig out my POH, but wasn't there a statement that the rings were supposed to be removed for flight?
-
Those are pretty cool looking. Did you buy it to do something specific?

Any chance you can post a picture? I am trying to visualize what you are doing and it ain't working. I would have thought the visor was attached to a structure and the screw hole is stripped out. Is this what you are trying to correct?

Wow! Looks like I need to fill my swimming pool up with mud again. Until the final accident report is issued, I am reserving judgement on what happened with this flight. Just like I am reserving judgement on the accident that involved the member of the NJ Mooney Pilots group. Bad things happen to good people...

Well Oscar, we will both need a beer after this adventure! I am running out to the store to get an 8GB card to try Larry's suggestion. As for error message; I think it is related to the cable running from the unit to the GPS antennae. If you can get behind the panel, I would make sure the coax cables are all on and snug. Not sure where they mounted your GPS antennae, but if you can get to it, I would check this as well. The only other things that it could be is if the cable is bad, the cable wore through because it was installed in a way to rub, the GPS is having a problem or the GPS antennae is bad but causing it to appear as a cable issue. Good luck my friend!

I looked up your engine for accepted spark plugs. You should be (I only looked at Champion brand) able to use a REM40E, REM38E or a REM37BY. I found an article that talks about what happens with the different heat ratings of the plugs. Maybe it is simple as a different plug. If not, the article continues on to (sit down when you begin reading this section) the other mechanical causes of higher cylinder temps. http://www.sacskyranch.com/eng23.htm Quite honestly, your temps on that one cylinder are below the threshold I try to stay below (390). If you have a major problem, I would expect you to be in the 400+ club. It may be the beginning of a problem (exhaust valve leak) but hopefully not.

Charlie's shop is a good one and I would have expected they would have went over the obvious causes. I re-read your original post and it looks like you covered all of the expected causes. It comes down to the basics; fuel, air, combustion & cooling. If the injectors check out, the baffling is fine that still leaves air flow and combustion. Have you done anything with the spark plugs yet? Are they all the same? They do make different ones and maybe one is different on that cylinder. The other problem could be air going into the cylinder. If the air induction is partially plugged on that cylinder, I would expect to see run richer (i.e. lower temps). The only other possibilities involve a possible issue with the cylinder itself. That said, running at 375 is not above that magical panic threshold where we might suspect mechanical issues with the cylinder. Keep us posted.

You should be able to measure fuel flow by taking off the injectors and sticking them in a container to catch the fuel for each cylinder. Run it for a set number number of minutes (depending on your container size) and measure the amount you collected per cylinder and extraploate to gal/hr. You should also be able to see if flow out of the injectors to see if they are partially clogged. I hope it is a fuel flow problem. Replacing an injector is far easier than tearing into a cylinder.

Hi Bob. I took a close look at SVT but had a hard time digesting the $3k cost. The promo they ran had it down to $2,500 but it was still too rich for my blood. My upper pain point for what this does is around $1,500. As was mentioned, I would rather spend the money on other things like an ADS-B receiver or turn on a stormscope. If the Connected Pilot was available for the GTN series, I would probably consider that over SVT. The only thing I liked about it that I thought would have been cool (provided it worked) was the pictorial you get when approaching an airport. Having it overlay where the airport is when popping out of the scud on an approach would be nice (again if it works).

Thanks Larry! I will give it a try.

Are you using Tapatalk? If so, I think when you go to the latest tab and click "mark all as read", it clears them all.

I know a number of my friends up North are still digging out from the blizzard. Thought I share a couple of pictures I took today on my way down to Ocean City Maryland. The first is looking out the pilot's window out to the Atlantic Ocean and the second is looking out the right window at the Chesapeake Bay. Taken seconds apart. Just a beautiful day, light winds and CAVU. Just want to thank you for taking this storm for us!

How does one go about signing up?

Finding a partner is like finding a wife... I have seen great airplane partnerships and some that ended up in divorce. Your philosophy on airplane maintenance and your how you structure the partnership seem to play the biggest role. At one time I searched for one when I entertained buying a new plane but realized, like my wife always says, "you're impossible to live with" Seriously, from partnerships I know, you better share a common set of values or have clear rules on how about you go about managing the plane. I knew of one partnership where one owner did not want to replace items until they broke, the other wanted to proactively fix things. One day I walked in on them in their hangar and I thought I was in the middle of a domestic dispute. Wasn't pretty. On the flip side, I have seen great partnerships where I thought they were twins when it came to finishing each other sentences

Wow! If I didn't know better, I thought I am in a discussion about my Ford Diesel 6.7 throwing NOx codes. Hopefully we won't start talking about HPFP failures due to water. To the original OP, I would not use a fuel injector cleaner on our engines. Pulling the injectors is the preferred process for dealing with partially clogged injectors.

Oh -- as for your question on the 750. The 750 has a much larger screen and if he really can offer it for $2k more, I would jump on it. The big differences with the 750 is that the audio panel can be integrated into the 750 (750 controls a remote audio panel -- which brings up another question, can he interface your existing audio panel?). Both 650 and 750 can control a remote transponder. The 750 also is able to display the approach charts for airports. Also -- if you haven't seen my thread on the database updates, you can expect to pay around $500 to $900 for database updates annually for a 650. Good luck with your decision.

Tom -- sometimes a good deal happens and then sometimes people get taken. I don't know this shop, but I would make sure I understood all you are getting for all you are giving. I found my quotes. GTN 650 hardware prices only (8 shops) ranged from $9,100 to $9,900. Installation for the GTN 650 ranged from $2,600 to $3,200 without the CDI (mine was being connected to an Aspen PFD). The GTN 750 was offered for an additional cost of $4,500 to $4,900. Here is where things may get interesting. The MD200-360 can be bought online for $2k. So it looks like he is offering around $11,000 of hardware for $2k less installed. If you take at face value your old radios as untagged and sold by you for $2,500. You basically are getting the GTN 650 installed for free. He will be able to yellow tag them and sell them for $5,000 to $5,500. So, if we do the math. You should be paying around $11k just for the GTN650 and MD200-360. And should be paying around $3,000 for installation. The total should come in around $14k. He takes your radios, yellow tags them and sells them for $5k. It works as break even deal. Now where I see a problem is the 750 price. There is no way he is going to sell you the 750 for $2k more. Every shop I spoke to wanted at least $4k more. Something is not right there. As well, there is no mention of whether your antennae will work for the Comm. Also, is he including all of the extras (wiring, connectors) or is he going to nickel and dime you to death? Before I commit, see if you can find other customers for the shop. Sometimes a shop does stuff like this because they are struggling and need to drive in new business. That said, they aren't a charity and if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. I would check around.

Tom -- I would check on the used value on these components before I moved forward. A quick look showed the DME to be work around $1,200 and the radio $1,500 to $2,500. All without yellow tag. If you get them tagged, I see most of the radios selling for over $3,000 and the DME over $2,000. It sounds like he is selling the radio (GTN 650) at or near the price you should expect to pay and using the trade in to cover his labor. I do question the 750 for $2k more. It should be more like double that. Let me look at the quotes I got and I will send you a reply.

Way to sum it all up! We only live once...

Bah Humbug! Well, I loaded the disks from my Mac booting fresh into Windows and on another PC that is on Windows 7. Took the drive to the airport and came up with the same result. Any other suggestions (other than someone volunteering to take this GTN 650 off my hands)?

Turn Coordinator or second attitude indicator?

Nice! We missed on all of it! Strange that you have light winds and it has been howling here. -

You have been busy! I went the Nexus 7, Garmin Pilot route for my alternate source of information. I had the iPad 2 in the plane on various Ram mounts. Never found a position that it didnt either blocked something or got in the way. Waiting for the new Ram mount for the Nexus to show up. Where are the pictures of the snow? We missed it here completely (northern Delaware). Not complaining but thought for sure we would have gotten a little bit of it. -
Do you remember who made it? I get asked periodically by Mooney owners and I can't remember who did. I'm pretty sure I saw it advertised in a MAPA magazine ad.
