  1. F tho Been there! For years I used one of those gizmos that you place on the altimeter and set your target altitude on it. When I moved over to the Aspen, there is a target altitude alert that you can set. The STEC in my plane has vertical speed control so it could be easy to set and forget and create an issue. I have done without altitude preselect, but it would have been nice to have to complement the VS.
  2. Can't speak to transponders with clocks in them, but can speak highly of the Davtron chronometer I have in my plane. I think the model is M870, simple to use, has count down/up capabilities, UTC, local time and flight timers. Simple to install into a 2 1/4 hole.
  3. I think a lot depends on your intended missions. If you are flying IFR a lot and on long flights, I find the altitude hold a welcomed relief and a great assist especially if I am being re-routed with a complex route. It allows me to use it as a CRM tool so I can concentrate on setting up the rest of the panel to accept the new routing. Could I do it without altitude, yep, did it for years with a basic wing leveler that worked half of the time. As for the ILS vertical guidance, as KSM stated above it, for our class of plane it may be a luxury. That said, I have that luxury, including auto trim and I have flown a number of approaches with it engaged. When you are flying single pilot IFR to a low approach, it is just another tool in the box that you can use. I can do everything my autopilot can do (and more, I can think) but will use my AP to its fullest. And for the purist out there, what I said above may be sacrilegious; but I didn't buy it for "in case of emergency, Push HDG & ALT". I bought it to be part of my CRM. APs are not cheap, even the upgrades. If you find you want/need the extra features, factor that into the FMV of the plane you are considering.
  4. I've never seen anything like it. Simply unbelievable! Not to mention unviewable
  5. Not an Acclaim driver, but a long time Mooney owner. Are you going back to takeoff position on the go around? I trim for hands off short finals with full flaps. If I need to do a go around I am pulling the flaps back to takeoff position and using the electric trim to relieve the pressure. Would be interested to hear others on this. Your HP difference and heavier nose may make your go around a bit different than mine. Also are your certain your electric trim is moving as fast as it should? Mine blows away my hand rotation of the trim wheel.
  6. Thanks!
  7. Sad to hear. Bill has been always been an approachable down to earth guy. Hope he makes a speedy recovery.
  8. Can you take some close up pictures and post them? I'm absolutely not happy with the SWTA conversion that was done in the late 80s on my plane. I suspect my plane was one of the first ones they did. The fit and quality of the final product leaves a lot to be desired. I have small access panels near the windshield and they look like crap. I'm looking for ideas on how to correct it before I have the plane painted.
  9. I absolutely hate it when the zombies set my airfield on fire! Especially if I haven't pulled the Wonder Waffle out of the box yet! http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3eLpJhG8has/TI2gBqOfYlI/AAAAAAAAAL4/K7KQAnscenE/s1600/Wonder+Waffle.png
  10. I share similar sentiments. I think we all know pilots who we may question their decision making. Whether it be one who ignores maintenance, takes off in questionable weather or is over confident in their or their plane's abilities. And I have been personally told to f*&w off because I spoke up when I saw someone flying a home brewed instrument approach into our airport that didn't have an approach at that time. My obvious concern is being regulated. If we don't self regulate, we leave the door open for it. For years drinking and driving crashes were called "accidents" and you never heard anyone going to jail for killing someone with their car while drunk. Times change. If I am doing something unsafe as a pilot, I hope my pilot friends say something to me. My judgment is based on my experience and I for one don't have all the experience others have.
  11. Obviously too short for an F model. Anyone have one they are selling for an F? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  12. I look at at bit differently; I have two planes. One powered, the other a glider... And if I owned a Cirrus, 3 planes!
  13. Good suggestion. With Aspen just west of the STEC controller, the only way I could orient it would with long side pointing east. That then overlaps the moved STEC. I'm thinking center stack is my best shot at this point. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  14. For the stopwatch feature, if you use Garmin Pilot, you can use the timer in the tools menu. Top of this picture. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  15. If it weren't for the rocker switches, the STEC move might have worked. The JPI unit extends a inch offset from the hole. In this case down. Keep me posted on the control mod! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  16. Bob - I use a RAM mount on my Nexus 7. It has pretty remarkable holding power and I have left mine on the plexiglass without the Nexus in it for a week without any issues. I have similar designed suction devices on my tile walls in my shower holding wet wash cloths and they have been there for over 6 months. That said, my wash cloths and empty Nexus cradle are a lot cheaper than your 696. I would take it down or if you can, remove the unit. I often wonder what effect altitude changes have on them. 17. Because Bob came from the same school I did. You always need to have redundancy of a redundancy of a redundancy of an original I have an GTN 650 with an Aspen PFD/MFD with a Nexus 7 running Garmin Pilot with an iPad running Garmin Pilot with a 295 in the flight bag just in case oops forgot that I also have an iPhone running ForeFlight. 18. Heck that speed would have taken the 172 I rented after I got my PPL. Of course, I had my rather rotund sister in law on board. Plane must of have been out of rig, wanted to constantly bank right... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  19. It's called an oxymoron! I agree! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  20. Holy smokes Batman! I thought I missed out on a new thread to see one resurrected! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  21. I know! You were so close to 200! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  22. Another option I might have is to toss my future plans for a 750 and use the space above the 650 for the JPI. What do you think? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  23. So tell me more how to go about a console switchover... I know you picked up a parts plane so I am guessing that is where you got the controls from. Is it a pain to make the conversion legal? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  24. Goes to prove these Mooneys are fast even on taxiways! I find myself doing the same as well.
  25. I bet Garmin would like you to think so... I have been flying with a CFII buddy who has a 530. From his playing around the 650 in my plane, it sounds like the majority of the same functionality is there (I hear a lot of "oh, that's where that is" from him). The biggest obvious difference is the touch screens in the newer stuff and if I am not mistaken the ability to use a remote transponder on the 650/750 and a remote audio panel on the 750. I'm sure the guys who have upgraded can tell you a bunch more detail.
