  1. Unfortunately, that is not how our society functions. If something becomes enough of a visible problem, we get "help". When most of us were growing up, drinking and driving was viewed considerably different than it is today. Heck, I can remember a cop following me home one night after he stopped me for a speeding ticket. He wanted to make sure I made it home okay. I was drunk as a skunk. After enough visibility was paid on drunk driving, we got "help". With the recent shootings, there is now increased momentum to get us gun owners "help". Not knowing this pilot, he could have been a safe pilot who made a mistake and paid for it or he could be one those pilots who is brazen and arrogant and thought he could get away with it (again). Whether or not anyone could have influenced the chain of events immediately before the accident, who is to say. But if he was one of those pilots who was brazen, I'm willing to bet there were indicators way before he got into that plane for it's last flight. We owe it to ourselves to self regulate when we can, otherwise we will get "help". Lord knows I am getting enough "help" with my medical...
  2. The only thing I don't like about my F model is the low gear speed. Requires a good amount of forethought to plan the descent. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
  3. That does it, I'm selling my F!! Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
  4. The human mind unfortunately is wired differently for everyone. Any of us who have been faced with a life threatening situation found first hand how we are wired. If time permits, some people work the problem while others surrender to their fate. Read the accident reports where people survived and you will see the spectrum of human response. What truly is sad is the loss of innocent lives. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
  5. You certainly have a unique problem with carriage returns!
  6. I do too, more so as I got older
  7. Brett -- do you know if this is the same mount that will be used with the Nexus 7. I went to the dark side and bought it instead of the iPad Mini. Works great, but I like the iPad version of Garmin Pilot better.
  8. Yours didn't
  9. Don't know about the circles Hank. My factory original with MPH on the outside and knots on the inside had circles around them. Every Mooney I have flown has had the circles. Any chance you have an aftermarket ASI?
  10. Me too. About time I met some of you...
  11. Tim (get that right?), I have mine mounted in a 2.5" hole but the theory should be the same. The adapter plate will mount to the 3.5" hole using screws and nuts and the GEM mounts to the adpater plate using screws only. There shouldn't be any nuts involved with the GEM unit itself. The GEM should have threads to accept machine screws. Am I missing something?
  12. Same here.
  13. I see where you are coming from Norbert. After I had my Aspen installed I found myself always looking at the mechanical ASI rather than the digital presentation of that data. I had to force myself to begin using it as a primary indicator. In my case, it was possible to teach an old Chimp a new trick (sorry, couldn't resist).
  14. I can see your point. How does the mechanical tach work with respect to this topic? Since the mechanical one I have is what is measuring my engine time, how does it count time? I guess a bigger question is what is the correct way to measure it? I can understand the concern for devaluing the plane because of time recorded that doesn't apply towards the true usage time. But if TBO is set on actual run time regardless of rpm, is it not better to report the actual usage of the engine rather than report less time? In your example above, this means if I run my engine to 2000 hours, I could also be really running it to 2400 hours (80 in 400 equates to 400 in 2000).
  15. Thanks Seth! You are a better man (ok a better thread searcher) than me. What was the final reason you switched at the last minute to the Horizon unit?
  16. You bring up the reliability question, which is fair. For those of you who have switched to electronic, are you running into issues with them. The mechanical tach in my plane has been there the whole 36 years. It owes me nothing (other the recent replacement cable that I am having problems with). Do the STCs for these units say anything about mechanical backups or restrictions? Since it sounds like the electronic gets its information from the mags, can you have both installed?
  17. Depends. Anyone who has done research on Mooneys will know to ask about the tanks. The type of sealant used in our age of Mooney did fail. My 75 started showing stringers of the sealant peeling off in 1992. Chances are someone has patched them your tanks over the years. If you and I were negotiating the sales price, I would insist on a reduction to cover the resealed or bladder option. Anywhere from half to the full cost of the replacement options. That said, when I bought my airplane in 1991, I didn't know much about the tanks. They were not leaking at the time and the mechanic who looked it over on the pre-buy never mentioned it. I got a year out of them before they began leaking.
  18. I've been thinking about converting to an electronic tach ever since my last issue with the tach cable. I searched the forum and couldn't find any threads dedicated to the topic. What are you guys using? How much work is involved in installing one and does it have any limitations or concerns I need to be worried about?
  19. Didn't know you were from Argentina. Buenos Aires was a great place to visit. Was introduced to Dulce de Leche there and could never get enough of it.
  20. I have an EI FP5 that I installed in 1995. Still going strong, simple to use and recently was interfaced to my Garmin GTN 650. I have a lot of hours on it and am very happy with it. It also has fuel pressure capability and I can say it reports the digital value of what I see on the Mooney analog gauge accurately. If you have any questions on it, let me know.
  21. I've flown behind some King APs. Seem of them were dead on and others never seem to be right. I loved my STEC 60-2 before the GPSS upgrade and I'm loving it even more. I didn't think it could make that much of an improvement in what was an already smooth autopilot.
  22. Mid Continent Instrument in Kansas did the work. I paid $375 through the avionics shop, so I suspect, okay, I know there was some mark-up from them. I'm really happy with the quality of the work. In addition to the new face, they went though the unit and verified functionality after their rebuild.
  23. The after picture
  24. LOL!
