  1. Mike - Sorry I am late to the show. I have the SB applied on mine and saw what changes happened when I had the Lasar lower cowl mod installed in 1995. Before the lower cowl enclosure, my cylinders ran cooler. The cowl enclosure raised the CHTs about 20° across the board. I often wondered why they applied two baffles to the #1 cylinder and not a second one to the #2 cylinder. I’ll look at my engine data and see if I have a higher #2 temp but I think I don’t. 2. Yes. A lot refer to that style as the towel rack. I doubt you’ll gain much if anything switching to the cat whisker style. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  3. At times I wished I did too. It was pretty sobering when I calculated what I spent over 31 years. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

  6. I think you’re going to find that there is nothing magical with many of the electronic components in our planes. Many are off of the shelf parts. I have replaced several relays (ex. landing light, flap relays) with exact OEM replacement parts bought at an electronics supply house (Grainger’s, Newark Electronics, Mouser Electronics, etc.). 8. Pretty comprehensive list. Don’t forget about the database updates for the navigators and your annual subscription to your favorite aviation app. [emoji6] My 20 AMU to 28 AMU lines up with your costs. Like Paul, I am always tweaking, updating or adding new stuff. I am also a believer in preventative maintenance to stay ahead of the unexpected expenses. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro
  9. Amen brother. I have owned my Mooney for 31 years and have meticulously tracked annual expenses. When I was preparing for retirement, I calculated that I could have retired 4 years earlier if I hadn’t spent it on my airplane! What I get amazed at is how people thinking about ownership fail to understand all aspects of the costs associated with owning an airplane. If you didn’t own a plane, you wouldn’t have tie down or hangar rent, you wouldn’t be paying for database updates, you might have rental insurance but you wouldn’t bear the full brunt of ownership insurance and you certainly wouldn’t be able to throw the keys on the FBO counter and say “something is broken and needs to get fixed.” My annual expenses run typically between 20 AMU & 28 AMU depending on how much I fly. I also factor the cost of the engine reserve in the hourly rate. Granted, if you flip planes, you may never see an overhaul, but if you are unlucky you might get straddled with one. There have been years where my hourly rate have been over .4 AMU/hr. Of course, all of this detail is between us owners - not to be shared with significant others for fear of your membership be expunged from the roles of Cheap Bast$#d Club. 10. From my beliefs (and I know others share this belief), I think there something with the metallurgy of when the engine was made that causes some of these engines not to do well sitting. I know of 2 Mooney’s that sat for years with first run 70s built engines and they are still going strong. And I know of others who had rebuilt a from the 90s and early 2000s that started having issues sitting. Your safest bet is to consider it as run out, negotiate a price accordingly and hope that the engine continues to run well. There are other issues to consider when looking at a plane that sits for a period of time. Was it stored in a decent environment? You’ll be amazed how fast mice take up residence. Here is a picture of the remnants of a mouse nest found in my Kubota tractor that was run 2 days earlier! I heard some really good advice from a guy recently who has owned 13 airplanes. He said, “look for an airplane that has been loved”. Sage advice. There will be telltale signs of a “loved” airplane. Has the plane been modernized at all? Are routine maintenance items being done over the course of ownership (or do you only find entries of repairs at annuals)? I think others have mentioned this before, but buying the plane is the cheapest part of airplane ownership. I can’t tell you how many times we have seen guys come on the site, ecstatic about buying their first plane only to see them come back after the purchase with issues that are causing them financial hardship. The key is to find the best plane you can and have enough money available when it isn’t. Good luck. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  11. I think there are a few other things to look at. I found as oil ages, you will see slightly higher oil temps and lower pressures. You didn’t mention how many hours you have on the oil. Also, I found that on really hot and humid days, raising the climb speed 5 knots can help a bit with high oil temps. If you told us that your oil temp stays high during cruise, I’d be looking for other factors. But it really sounds like a hot/humid climb situation - that is unless you come back and say your cylinders are at 450° [emoji6] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  12. Sorry to hear this. I was planning on using AGL for my next annual. Flying to Texas is a bit far for an annual. Good luck with the move. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  13. My suggestion is to go out and buy a lottery ticket. No one can have that much bad luck without having a good luck bounce back. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro
  14. So, I’ve pulled up and read the old threads on this oil that was introduced in 2019. We are at 3 years since it’s introduction in 2019 and I’m curious of those who made the swap from Aeroshell 15W/50 how things are going. Any insights? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro

  16. ^^ This. I remember flying back to my home base in Buffalo years ago. I was on a Victor airway with a Cherokee ahead of me and at the same altitude. The next thing I heard was the guy in the Piper declaring an emergency and saying he couldn’t maintain altitude. When queried by the controller he said he was instantly iced over. He made it out of the icing and landed at a nearby airport. So, there I am wondering if I am going to run into the same stuff. I was young and dumb and as most young and dumb pilots, decided that “if he got out, my superior piloting skills and my trusty Mooney steed could handle it”. I flew into the same area and picked up absolutely nothing. Then on a flight a few weeks later, I picked enough icing in a thin stratus layer I was climbing through that made me older and smarter. The point is that icing is unpredictable. I learned you don’t linger in the clouds in the winter, especially in places like Buffalo. You also become more of a student of weather to understand the Skew-t and available info from sources like ADDS. And I’m sure the guys flying the known ice planes are still cautious about any icing since they can still encounter stuff like SLD that can overwhelm an anti-icing system on our class of plane. 17. I don’t see a “B” variant of the 8163 listed at Aircraft Spruce. The “A” version is out of stock. Have you tried contacting Weldon directly to see if they can overhaul your unit? They offer rebuilt units, maybe that is the solution. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  18. I just thought of this. Mr. Stinky Pants - does Alan know you are planning a fly in at his hangar? I seem to recall you inviting people over for fly in a few years and the host never knew. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro
