  1. I think you'll find that vintage Cs (& Es & Fs) have a great variety of panels. Even if they do not have glass, WAAS GPS or autopilots they well might have a 6 pack instrument panel. The 3 broad areas that affect the price and value of a vintage Mooney are the engine time, avionics & instruments, and over all condition of the airframe - mechanically, paint, interior. A C model with a run out engine, a minimal antique panel in need of paint and an interior and probably a long mechanical squawk list might be worth very little more than scrap value since an engine overhaul, a panel with modern avionics, and a paint job will cost the buyer about as much as the plane will be worth.
  2. This is a must read: http://www.avweb.com/news/savvyaviator/savvy_aviator_59_egt_cht_and_leaning-198162-1.html
  3. Interesting. I have an Owner's manual for a '66C. It calls for best economy as 25 deg LOP and best power as 100 ROP. It also warns not to lean at all at 75% power or more. And the manual for my '66E calls for 25 ROP for best economy.
  4. Hi Hish, I note you were looking at Cs and Fs last year. Did you find a plane?
  5. Steve, I doubt that you're able to run your O-360 50 LOP (lean of peak). Do you mean 50 Rich of Peak? The prevailing wisdom is that it is tough to run a carburetor engine LOP. If you're on a tight budget or have other priorities you might look into a used multi-cylinder engine monitor. People here and elsewhere are upgrading their EDMs to primary instruments like the JPI EDM 930 and are selling perfectly good edm 700s etc. There should be dozens of threads here on power settings and leaning M20Cs. Try the search function.
  6. I'm considering the Manchester NH PPP in September How much actual flying does one get in 3 days? I not they have to have 25 enrolled so I wonder how many instructors are there and what the student to instructor ratio is. For $845. plus travel and hotel.
  7. I have one. In the hangar.
  8. I still have not subscribed to Savvy paid service. I might just to see if they can help isolate a possible prop governor issue. I replaced prop cable but RPM still drifts.
  9. PowerFlowSystems: All slip joints must be disassembled and lubricated with a high-temperature anti-seize compound (MIL-A-907E or equivalent) at 500hr or Annual intervals (whichever comes first). While disassembled, inspect for wear or galling. This should be performed more frequently if headers seize between inspections.
  10. We've been to the last 2, missed the 1st one, and plan to attend this year. Bob Kromer is a great resource for Mooney information. Don Maxwell has forgotten more than I've leaned in 2600+ hours owning and flying Mooneys. But I'll probably pass on the optional flying opportunities this year in favor of MAPA Foundation's PPP.
  11. Ms. Google knows everything. Some of it is true. http://housekeeping.about.com/od/environment/tp/Ph-Levels-For-Common-Cleaning-Supplies.htm
  12. www.savvyanalysis.com can import data saved on a PC from a JPI. No doubt from an EI as well. And yes, the JPI talks to the GPS and stores those data.
  13. Here's what I had missed: Service Advisory 1540: GTN 7XX Units with Main Software Version 5.11 or 5.13 and FliteCharts® Updates 10 June 2015 / Service Advisories / AFFECTED PRODUCTS: GTN 725 and GTN 750 units using Main Software Version 5.11 or 5.13. ISSUE: GTN Main Software Versions 5.11 and 5.13 changed the way that FliteCharts data are handled by GTN 7XX units. In some cases a new FliteCharts data update may become corrupted, causing the GTN datacard to become unusable. (GTN 6XX units do not use FliteCharts and are not affected.) PILOT ACTION: Owners and operators of GTN 7XX units with v5.11 or v5.13 software should not update the FliteCharts database without first performing the steps outlined in this Service Advisory 1540. http://garmin.blogs.com/files/1540a.pdf
  14. Yes, I was installing early but I've done that in the past without problems. I talked to Garmin after several hours of trying everything I could think of. That's when I learned of what I would call a bug in 5.13 that necessitated the manual delete of old files. I assume 6.11 fixes that glitch but I suspect I'll need new SD cards since the Garmin signature has apparently been lost or corrupted. (MS says the card needs to be formatted, Garmin download manager does not find a card. I have had the 750 for over 3 years and I had a Garmin 155 TSO before that so I've been downloading date every 28 days for a long time. The process is not very intuitive relative to other web site but I made peace with it. (I just printed out all the Garmin notices I've received in the last 6 months and am reading them carefully to find the delete files instruction I apparently missed. Still looking.
  15. Don, that's what I ran into. While I prefer Jepp charts from all the years I flew with their paper, I use the Garmin version on the 750 and 696 because of the cost difference. I still haven't found where Garmin documented the need to manually delete the old charts before loading the new ones. I was told that only terrain and charts data remain on the SD card and that I will have navdata while waiting to get upgraded to 6.11 and perhaps get new formatted SD cards.
  16. Thanks, I upgraded to 5.13 in December. Updates worked okay every 28 days until this week. Are you deleting old files? Apparently there was a Garmin email I did not read thoroughly.
  17. I have an appointment for next week to upgrade from 5.13 to 6.11. Anyone experience this? I was unable to update the 750 SD card - apparently with 5.13 it became necessary to manually delete certain old files. I may have to have new SD cards.
  18. Monday's flight from KGGG to KMRN: with Ram Air and PowerFlow exhaust I'm seeing 21.9" @ 9000' (Alt. 29.97, OAT 8C). 159-160 KTAS. in 50 year old M20E. I've been 2020 compliant and enjoying weather and traffic for 4 years with GDL 88.
  19. PC laptop, W10, Firefox. AOPA site works fine. I've used AOPA flight planning, CSC DUATS, FltPlan.com and www.1800wxbrief.com. I could live with any of them but the new AOPA flightplanner seems to be the fastest and friendliest. Frankly, I am amazed that all these great resources make flight planning so easy and for free! I have not talked to a briefer in 25 years. We live in marvelous times and my glass is way full. This past weekend I flew a 50+ year old Mooney KMRN-M40-KGGG-KERV and back, almost 2000 nm. 2 approaches with ceiling below 400' and 2 takeoffs into similar ceilings Easy peasy thanks to modern technology. Hang in there George! ISTM AOPA is the organization most closely aligned to my flying interests and I'm very glad it is fighting the good fight in Washington.
  20. I'd call Don Maxwell in Longview TX. (KGGG) He does a lot of insurance work. Taking it to him would be an easy flight from anywhere in AL or he would pick it up.
  21. Loving this whole thread. Welcome to the club.
  22. I'm pretty sure MooneyGirl (Jolie Lucas) has a favorite Mooney Instructor in Oregon.
  23. This thread brought out a few CBers. I think I spend more money putting a little gas in borrowed crew cars than my AOPA/MAPA/EAA dues cost me. My motives for both are similar. AOPA 00393927 EAA 1131501 MAPA 1152
  24. Distractions at the right/wrong moment can contribute to the interruption/abandonment of a mental/written check list. I used to think that I would notice the reduced drag. Y'all be careful out there! I have this system. It works great. Unless the CB is pulled to quiet false alarms. http://www.flyingsafer.com/landing-gear-warning-systems.html
  25. Naw, that would be gilding the lily. Next money will be to copy Byron/Rebecca's new paint job. And before that I need to check out David's new cowl at Oshkosh.
