  1. A few years ago I saw one of these over the natural gas range in Eastern West VA. BILL
  2. CYRs = Canadian Restricted Areas. Similar to our Restricted areas over critical areas (state capitols, etc). BILL
  3. Be careful removing the lower cowl.... UNBOLT the ram air boot FIRST !!! Otherwise it tears when you find it's the thing holding the cowl on and then it's another $300 bill. Bill
  4. Sounds from the report that a local service moved the A/C for later inspection "The wreckage was recovered from the accident site and moved onto GED airport property where it was secured for examination at a later date.". They may have drained the tanks with disregard to quantity and location. Bill
  5. I like this idea. I was on the IBM committee to Udvar Hazy during the planning and development. My job changed before the opening otherwise I was to be there. Years before it opened we discussed having a day a year for fly-ins. Those were the good old days ! BILL
  6. NICE job !! Thanks for the link ! BILL
  7. Three airplanes flew in !! TWO WERE MOONEYS !!. I had a great flight. IMC all the way, both ways. The other Mooney came from Myrtle Beach. The other plane was a 172 from Charleston area. Obviously most people drove and there were about 50 there. On the return trip they changed my approach about 1/2 way and by the time I had the right fix loaded into the GPS I was past it. (Mooneys are fast you kinow). So we did a sweeping right 360 and came back to the fix under ATC control. Two smooth flights and two squeaker landings. My passenger was really impressed. I was bummed out I left the GO PRO at home. Would have made a great video since the travel time was about 20 mins each way. BILL
  8. So when is the MOONEYSPACE fly in to Hatteras ??? BILL
  9. A: adjust for crosswind with upwind wing down. B: You're probably holding on the ground too long. When you had your instuctor you were heavier and needed the extra time, now you're lighter and it wants to fly soonner so let it. The stall horn will tell you if it's not fast enough. I notice same thing when I'm alone but not with a passenger. BILL
  10. Stay current. I fly 3 approaches every 3 months with a safety pilot. We usually make a tour of a couple of nearby airports. Yesterday we went to an airport neither of us had been to (T73- Kirk Airbase) and met the owner. Gas was $4.90/gal cash only so I got 20 gal. Nice place and story behind it (he paid $2600 in 1971 for the property !!). On a trip to S. Fla, I was just N of Daytona taking some pics of the clouds when ATC called.. "TRAFFIC 12 OCLOCK 1 MILE, 1000 ft above, a C130" I never saw it until I looked at the picture later that night... BILL
  11. There is money to be made for those willing to learn a skill and work !! Bill
  12. WAY TO GO !! I remember mine like it was yesterday and it was 10 years ago !! BILL
  13. There is a guy who travels GA, SC and NC.. He called me yesterday saying I was due... He did it last night for $260. He did 2 others on the field and one at Morganton in the morning. That's about the best deal around and I don't have to spend any avgas. BILL
  14. No surprise. came out MOONEY for me ! BILL
  15. Took me about 3-4 months to find one with all the avionics I wanted (gps, A/p w/alt hold, etc). Found it wihin 100 miles at a fair price. BILL
  16. Find the plane your want with the avionics you want already in it. Avionics upgrades are EXPENSIVE and not recoverable. I bought my 65 E 3 years ago (can't believe it's been that long already) with all the goodies I wanted.. 430, autopilot w/alt hold, slaved hsi + + +.. The previous owner upgraded it in 2006 or 7 with $46K ! Which is what I parid for it (was listed at $52). It was not perfect and needed a few things but was airworthy in all aspects. BILL
  17. My student assistant is in the Air Force learning to fly fighters. He was near the top of his class in ROTC. That's what it takes. When I graduated I tried for Navy but I was not ROTC and did not get a flight offer (had my pilots license already). I got mine for about $1000 in 1970 working for flying time at the local airport. I had enought time in the bank that I took a plane to school for 3 months during the winter ! BILL
  18. I would test it with a Volt meter before changing anything. I suspect a bad connection somewhere.. BILL
  19. Exactly what I use ! BILL
  20. I'm out of Wilgrove (abt 20 air miles away)... I may be wrong but I think My guy at Wilgrove would come look at it. His name is Mark Howell.. 704 6985739. He's an honest guy and if he can't fix it he'll tell ya BILL
  21. That's what I thought after they changed the staff. Now I'd go to TAC AIR. BILL
  22. I've done this at Charlotte International (KCLT) and Raleigh Durham.... Land, taxi to the FBO and use their crew car or shuttle to get to the terminal and meet your passenger. Back to the FBO, pay the fee, get a clearance and go. Pretty simple BILL
  23. When my former partner and I bought our Sundowner (2003) , the airport had a 2-4 year backlog on their shadeports at $120/mo. Tiedown was $45/mo. We were able to put up a "portable" (Shelterlogic) for $5K plus $3K in concrete. We had that plane 7 years paying only $45/mo for the hangar. We sold the plane and I bought out the partner from the hangar and airport golf cart. The Mooney just fits in (4 in / side clearance) but it's still a dry area. The front door needs replacement and I probably will replace the roof in a year or 2. (c$5k at todays prices for the fabric for both Door and Roof). Since we put mine up, two more went up but these are the US STEEL quonset hut hangars an a LOT more pricey. I could "sell" it when I'm done if there are any buyers. BILL
  24. I have been there several times (in/out same day) stayed overnight once. I've used both FBOs but the last time I went to TAC air (was something JET at the time). I used to use LANDMARK but they changed all the personnel and got really tough on the "landing fee". On a day trip I'd fly in and tell then when I'm leaving then order a pair of PIZZAS to be delivered at noon from my work location with my N number on the box. I'd arrrive and the plane would be waiting and a big grin on the people saying thankyou !! Cheaper than the 10gal of $7 fuel. BILL
  25. Interesting since the mixture control shuts off the fuel at the servo and therefore the short time running after mixture cutoff should suck the fuel from those lines but I guess it doesn't get it all. There must be enough there to get a quick start. Thanks for the explanation. BILL
