ASI discrepancy Aspen vs. steam backup
M016576 replied to Bob_Belville's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Before you guys go crazy... a really really easy way to see which one is accurate is to take your hand held GPS (iPad w/stratus?) and or panel mount and see if it agrees with your Aspen (my bet is that it does). If it does... then you know the mechanical is not reporting correctly. If they do not, then you know it’s the Aspen. once you figure that part out, then you’ll have a better idea of the way forward. My bet is that the Aspen derived GS is within a knot of the GPS... then just take a look at the TAS calculations on both to verify. And note the winds. You’ll be able to tell if the IAS is accurate based on the TAS calculator and referencing GS&winds. 6 knots is a big enough discrepancy to be able to find the erroneous gauge. Edit- I ran the numbers in your pic from above, and guess what- your true airspeed matches perfectly from the Aspen... but not the mechanics ASI. If your ground speed is indeed correct, and their are no winds (or minimal winds...which is what it looks like based on the Aspen), then your aspen looks to be closure to the “truth data.” When I plug in 139 based on your mech. ASI..with the same settings that are indicated, the TAS drops to 149... so if your GS is accurate on the Aspen, and aligns with your panel mount gps/hand held GS’s, then it’s definitely your mechanical airspeed that’s reading low. -
I tried to PM you and it says that “Seth can’t receive messages”.. maybe too many in your inbox? Try to PM me... maybe we can get it to work that way! I’m dying for details- this mod will be AWESOME on a Missile! 40lbs more useful load and shifts the CG aft??? That’s probably almost 1200lbs useful for you...Sign me up!

Let me know the details, Seth- I’m interested too... maybe we can get a group buy going... @RogueOne

So true.... The liability & risk/reward for building a product that isn’t in that high of a demand (compared to their other money makers) is probably part of the reason why.

It would be very difficult to outdo the efficiency and reliability of a predator using a piston built aircraft. There is a reason why almost all military aircraft are turbine powered these days.

Aspen was doing so many of the upgrades they ended up behind schedule- it took almost 8 weeks for them to turn my units around. I dropped the plane off in mid July, picked it up in early September (the hot months down here in Phoenix... not pleasant for ga flying!) the blue banana is very pronounced- it’s impossible to miss on the displays... on my IFD, sometimes I forget that it’s there, it’s so subtle. It works as it should- tells you the expected intercept point for the climb/ descent you’re in. I like having it on my mfd now, rather than having to look at the IFD for it.

I wouldn’t call anything a true FIKI solution.... other than maybe afterburners! legal on the other hand....that’s a whole different story! Yeah.... seems like a bad idea....

So funny! I was about to post a very similar thread after flying back from Fullerton today and taking some photos of my Max displays! The two main things I’ve noticed since the upgrade to MAX- 1: the displays are very clear/crisp and colorful compared to the older models. 2: there is no longer any lag in the displays when synthetic vision is enabled- they run smoothly. The “lag” or “jitter” was my chief complaint about the old Aspen with SV enabled (without SV, it was fine)... obviously I wasn’t the only one- the new processing power has brought clear, fast displays to the Aspen. oh, one other thing I noticed- the case no longer gets hot. So the new technology must be running quite a bit cooler, too! here are my pics...

For those that have entered an air race before- is it normal for the host of the race to ask to haVW the event entered on your aircrafts personal certificate of insurance for the duration of the event?

Considering heresy - talk me out of a BE58

^this is what stopped me from looking further into piston twins (on my budget). -

and that’s what we call a “bullseye” in the industry! -

Not on the 35.... they are 1 ply. Any cord showing is a replacement -
aspen is doing a lot of things- but “going under” isn’t one of them.

The aspen rep above just said that a failed device can be upgraded for 5K total to max, or repaired for 2.5k i don’t see where the 7.5K total is coming from. The rep specifically stated that you don’t need the device to be functioning to upgrade it (so it’s not 2.5+5.... just 5 or 2.5). of course, that is assuming that the poster is actually an aspen rep, Which I believe he/she is.

Run away trim, or not reset trim can definitely be causal in an accident like this.

Even targeting hulls values at 1.5+ million or more, this is still a terrible “deal.” Market dynamics will most likely prove this soon enough.

Seth! New prop?!?! Are you doing this?!?! ever since Erik swapped his prop out for that 4-blade MT, I started thinking about what a 3 blade MT would do for the Missile... imagine... 20-30lbs less weight that far forward on the nose.... while the extra U/L would be amazing.. the CG/balance on the aircraft would be even more compelling to me... imagine not being at near full Nose Up trim on landing. so..... are you doing this or what?! Details, man!!! -
This is true.

Was being the operative word. Sad to see... and now the Fiki bravo’s are just that much more rare...

And THAT’s saying something!

The Concorde batteries in my missile are just showing their age (which means they need to be replaced ASAP.. as they are agm.)... they are 5 years old. That’s about as good as the AGM batteries in both my Jetta and my M3. The flooded gills I used previously? 2 years max. I’m happy with my concordes. They are one of the few items in the plane that seem to be on par with auto technology... and not too ridiculously overpriced.

1) semantics! Hah! (But I’ll take that- while I’m sure there were a few “insurrectionists” participating in terrorist actions, I’m willing to bet that most were not). 2) What about powered airplanes... and the internet? I’m fairly certain those were two American inventions.
-
Correct me if I’m wrong, but at one point, all of the americas were labeled a terrorist territory by the British... some time around 1775... so much so that the King sent in an army to weed out the terrorists. That one didn’t turn out so well for his Majesty. I wonder what a British designed mooney would have looked like
