  1. This has been my experience with the IO-550 as well... can’t even really tell it’s LOP other than the egt dropping when getting leaner
  2. I should have specified- 280 vs 310HP ovations. The 280 hp ovations won’t do what a Missile or Rocket will do. The 310 hp ovations will- and then some (they are the fastest O’s). No replacement for displacement. a 280hp ovation flown 20 LOP over 10K wont do greater than 180 KTAS. Both a Missile and a 280 Ovation can fly greater than 180KTAS at lower altitudes, and rich of peak. 310 Ovations are faster by about 5-8 knots. Fuel flows are a little higher.. older ovations without TKS, AC, etc may have useful loads over 1000. Newer ones typically are in the 900’s. Missiles are about 1125- I think rockets are about 1100 as well, but I don’t know that for sure.
  3. A Missile and Rocket will have the best useful load and performance for the dollar. If you pay an extra 50K over the Rocket/Missile- you can get an Ovation. Ovations are slower and have less useful load (typically), but are newer and are a “long body.” the 252 and 262 will have the worst useful load. If it’s just you and one other, (downhill) skis fit just fine so long as they are 185’s or less. If they are cross country skis, you’ll want to make the ski tube mod. as has been discussed above: if you’re planning on flying at night, in the winter, you’ll want TKS- inadvertent or FIKI. There are some screaming deals out there on Bravo’s (M20M). If you fly below 12K, they are not very efficient compared to an ovation or a Missile... but if you’re up in the FL’s- they MOVE! (210+KTAS!) M20J Missile STC numbers climb- 110KTAS- 1300FPM at SL, about 1000FPM through 6-7K, 850FPM at 10K. Cruise- 10K- 175KTAS- 12.5 GPH (LOP) 12K- 170KTAS- 11.5GPH (LOP) 8K- 175KTAS- 13.5GPH (LOP) 6K- 183KTAS- 16.5 GPH (150ROP) I make the flight from Oregon to Idaho often to go skiing- only had to delay or re-route a few times for weather. But if you’re going to make a trip like this in a light Ga aircraft- make sure you are totally comfortable cancelling if the weather turns on you... no amount of FIKI or turbo chargers will get you above/out of some of the storms old Mother Nature can throw at us.....
  4. CAV’s overhaul price is actually pretty reasonable.
  5. Where in Idaho?
  6. Just for the sake of those reading, since multiple posters have made this error.... its Biennial (as in, every other year). Not Biannual (Twice a year) ... just sayin’...
  7. Did you tell him you didn’t have an intention to fly? If you’re towing a personal aircraft (not running the motor) in a non-movement area, with no intention to fly- I’m pretty sure you don’t need a biennial or a valid medical. I could be wrong though- I don’t have the regs sitting in front of me. Once you’re sitting behind the controls and taxing through movement areas, I think that’s when you need to be in currency.
  8. I bought the lifetime subscription in 2013. Love it. I Love how one company is focused on GA, and in particular- private pilots in GA... not the 1MM+ pro pilots that probably aren’t paying for their own subscriptions anyway. Foreflight is totally focused on enterprise (IMO) and could care less about us “little guys.” Their loss... personally, I find FlyQ to be easier to use and more intuitive (I had/have foreflight for “free” through work- not a fan). Seattle avionics “Gets it.” Now, if only they would start producing NavData for avidyne’s... let’s make GA Great again.
  9. I’ve been a professional pilot for 16 years, thousands of hours of turbine time, hundreds of aircraft carrier arrestments, combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. I’m an ATP, a CFII, have over 700 hours in the mooney alone... and my in laws and parents still are “worried” when I fly the family in the mooney. Lately they demand I fly IFR (even on beautiful, clear, eastern Oregon days!) so they can monitor me via flight aware. Silly! I think its it’s just a natural reaction to family members flying- honestly. I take their concern as a sign that they care for us. Driving the 8 or so hours through remote, Ice covered, fog laden, low traffic roads is far more dangerous for my typical family mission that only takes 2 hours in the mooney (albeit across remote terrain)... I think if every family that died in a car crash was on the front page of a news paper, my family would be a little more pro-GA-flying and a little less “why don’t you guys drive.”
  10. I will say this- even though I think it’s about $1500-$2000 more than it should be to really attract the crowd considering G5’s, Aspen’s or even G500’s.... I will probably end up buying one. Why? I’ve got a single tube Aspen, I do not have the $3200 autopilot adaptor for it, and the KI-256 that’s driving my KFC-150 sounds like someone threw a handful of gravel in it as it’s spinning down. It’s days are numbered. so I either have to buy an EA100 autopilot adaptor from aspen, and another backup AI, and have them installed, or buy this. Aspen EA100+ second aspen tube = 7-8K install for that- $1500.. so in for about 9500. Or, 6K and I’m good with a Ki-300. of course, with the second aspen backup, I get more display space and charts/approach plates... and I’d be able to remove and sell all the analog instruments and the vacuum pump- so maybe I recoup 1500-2000.... now it’s looking much more equal in terms of cost but I’m “getting” more for my money with a second Aspen... oh, and the Aspen is already available
  11. I think they have to wait for Garmin or Stec to build it for them (or put a piece of tape with “king” penciled on it over the logo).
  12. Sad.... I guess some things never change (in aviation). Yet another wasted opportunity.
  13. I bet he’s flying exactly what I’d be “flying”.... and by that, I mean riding in the back of a G650 sipping Bourbon.
  14. I hit send on my previous message before finishing the thought- but you read my mind! edit: the prize is I get to spend more money on fluid.... great. Hah!
  15. Am I the only guy that goes through 55 gallons a year? by that, I’m more wondering how much people are actually using this system. It gets a good workout for me in the winter months here in Oregon- just starting it up “in case” tends to run me through a gallon or two.
  16. That’s exactly what I’ve done the past two years- around here 55 gallons lasts about a year. Just be aware when you order from them, they can only ship the barrels to a business or airport. I take delivery through my FBO, then move it to the hangar.
  17. I think what Niko means by POH numbers is the advertised top speed numbers. That certainly was the case with the M20M: hence the bravo mod. If that’s what he means, I agree with him- seems like those speed record numbers run hot in more ways than one. But POH numbers in general at the lower %HP shouldn’t be bad- especially with us NA folks.
  18. To answer the OP’s question- no. Unless you want to fly above about 14,000 and burn 23ish GPH. In which case yes. if you want to reliably get faster than 200KTAS, and fly below the “mask-on-o-sphere” you’ll need a different airplane. 180 KTAS on 13GPH is pretty good though, and if you’re within 650NM of several destinations, it’s an easily achievable feat. I’ve been flying the Rockies and west coast for 9 years and about 1000 hours in a J and now a TKS’d missile, and it’s been a great family hauler experience. Lots of trips to take for the centerally located on the west coast: Seattle, Portland, Napa, Monterey, Sacramento, Reno, Vegas, LA, SLO, SD... and that’s not even talking about the coastal gems or the more remote options. From Vegas (I used to live a bit west of there)- lots of options. The real cost savings doesn’t come in until you start talking about flying 4... a wife and 2 kids... it’s a stretch to make a mooney “economical” before that, unless your time is worth that much (sadly, mine is not- or at least it isn’t according to my employer!)
  19. Same! Cant beat a Missile for overall speed and economy!
  20. Thanks for sharing those! It’s surprising, but there are relatively few pictures of Ice on a mooney wing, and what to expect it to look like. How long did it take for that to accumulate?
  21. You look like an expert in turning a large fortune into a small one
  22. That’s a great point about the engine monitor and evaluating the owner. ive had engine monitors installed in both my mooneys- but haven’t had a single person actually ask me for their logs when either was on sale. makes me wonder.... I don’t think any owner goes out there and says “I’m really going to run this motor hard and trash it!”... yet every pilot I’ve met, to the one, says that other pilots do exactly that (run their motors incorrectly/too hard). So where are all these “bad engine runners.” Kind of like below average drivers on the road... or below average pilots in the sky. I haven’t met too many people that would say they are either... yet half of us are!
  23. Flight aware can only show GS, not KTAS: 173 makes sense for a light tailwind and some altitude
  24. You must work with other pilots: those are the only people that care, or so I’ve found! either that, or lawyers... luckily they haven’t found me.... yet. just kidding, kind of.
