  1. Since most of us who go to SnF are not exactly young in years the risk seems a bit higher than for a gathering of a more general sample of the USA population.
  2. I have a VHF handheld in the plane. Its battery is charged whenever the plane is powered. A dedicated VHF comm antenna installed on the plane is connected via coax to the handheld radio. Without the external antenna the portable radio is nearly worthless as a backup because the “rubber duckie” antenna offers little range.
  3. Turbocharger hose blew off the inlet side in my T210 at 15,000. The engine seemed dead but regained some useful power down low. Exciting but no real challenge to land normally at an airport.
  4. “Right after liftoff the engine ran really loud and rough, lots of shaking, for about 2 minutes. Then it quit completely for a few seconds, and then started up again. It ran rough still, not as bad as before, for about another six minutes. Then it abruptly quit for good.” ”How fast were you going then?” ”Oh, about 17,000 mph.”
  5. Since last year we are using the Sidewinder. It does well even moving the 2,000 kilogram PA46. No concerns pulling. There is however concern when pushing a Mooney as the Sidewinder lever arm is long enough to dimple a nose gear truss tube.
  6. A log entry will cover many situations. My all-time favorite was found in the airframe log of a Cessna T210. It read in its entirety, and I quote, “replaced left wing with serviceable unit.”
  7. Looks good. Go ahead — buy one, get an A&P to install it with a 337 and let us know how it goes.
  8. I fly with a well-used 4 cylinder (ok, chamber) heart with all original valves.
  9. One reason I selected the L-3 ESI500 as backup to the Garmin G500 is that it uses different hardware and different software.
  10. I’ve occasionally used the AHRS in the Garmin FlightStream 210 as a third AI for cross-check during flight. The three sources have always agreed closely. My FlightStream 210 is permanently mounted to the radio rack so the AHRS airframe reference is fixed: Yes, you don’t want an AI linked to a box that’s moving around inside the plane. I don’t know if there is any internal self-check of the 210’s AHRS validity (of its ‘Integrity’ to use FAA-speak). Probably not.
  11. Yes, if your UAT is operating in anonymous mode and you are receiving no ATC services and have squawk code 1200 set in your Mode A/C transponder, and you are outside of rule airspace (whew) — you’re compliant with 91.225. As soon as you enter a discreet transponder code issued by ATC the UAT is required to switch out of anonymous mode.
  12. Icom A-220? Fits the space but uses a different rack and connectors. A solid com radio.
  13. By the way, I want mine with fully retractable amphibious floats. And FIKI.
  14. In my case .... I transitioned to a JetProp from my C model. (OK, I had flown a few other types, too) A few years later I retired, sold that JetProp and bought an Ovation. But I missed the stench of JetA in the morning and so I got another JetProp.
  15. I’m impressed that — Cirrus has already repaired most of the fleet — There are 170 of those jets already flying
  16. Both. Have you tried some ScotchBrite on the brass plugs? They should buff out bright as new.
  17. Good results with the FlightStream 210’s AHRS and ForeFlight: The display of attitude on the iPad matches those on panel.
  18. Sure, it is no problem to take our GA planes into major airports. Well, it is expensive and you want a geo-referenced taxi chart on your iPad, but no problem. The trickiest I’ve experienced were SFO and JFK, probably because those airports are tightly packed into very limited real estate.
  19. I use one of these as the overhead cabin lamp. Forget to switch it off and you’re out 3 AAA batteries. And the plane still starts.
  20. If you’re getting that rate jump after all that training and 3 check rides in one year, well, then we can all expect increases.
  21. Those JetA infections can be hard to shake.
  22. Another benefit of ADS-B Out is the Aireon Alert system. Aireon operates a satellite based network with worldwide coverage at all altitudes. Search and rescue can quickly get a plot of a plane’s recent GPS location. The network operates on 1090 only; 978 MHz is not monitored. A diversity Mode S transponder (with an antenna on top of the airplane) is preferable. Aireon Alert
  23. Not normally for D, but this D is under the 30 mile Ring from a B, so yes.
  24. Sounds reasonable: The PT-6A-20 in this plane burns only about 16 GPH in ground idle. Maybe the pilot didn’t want to “waste” 5-6 gallons of JetA.
  25. Putting the plane in heated hangar for a few hours is a good solution & one that may melt other ice you don’t see such as inside control surfaces. (I know, it’s not a CB choice)
