piperpainter replied to mbeatty67's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I was over hayward like 4 times last weekend! Did you still want to sit in one? i am up at VCB but I could always go for a free lunch! -

How high can you take a M20C?
piperpainter replied to Oscar Avalle's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I've had my C all the way up to 18400 before. You don't have a lot of power but if you gotta do it ya gotta do it! If you aren't heavily loaded up you can plan on 16K as a cruising altitude. She does pretty good there. I've crossed parts of the country at 16K many times because it's the smoothest altitude or has a great tailwind. Of course you need O2 but there isn't anyone else up there so it's kinda nice! Hope this helps! -
Did anyone say Shepard air yet!!!! :-) got a 93% studied like 4 days. Worth the $75

Departing a hot and high airport
piperpainter replied to RobertE's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
In wells you have no obstacle to climb at all and a long runway. You'll be fine even at gross weight midday. The only thing with midday is that you'll have bumps on the way home! So early or late is better for a smooth flight! I'd take my C in there with no prob! I've taken the C off from KPNA (7000ft MSL with DA around 9K) with no problems. Endemic climb but I didn't have much for obstacles! Have fun, be safe! -
I ALWAYS take a bag of tools with me. And because I work on the plane with my mechanic so much I know what tools I'll need for the jobs I may encounter. Knowing your airplane can save you time, especially if you're at an airport with nobody at all! With the places I go, I need to be capable of figuring this stuff out!

This must be a dial up connection....waiting...kkckkrrddf beeeeep....kkrr.........

I agree with Marauder. I really love that I took several accident investigation courses. Part of the course was finding out if an engine was running, how fast etc.....really opens your eyes to simple things!

haha sorry! The interior panels! such as the hat rack area, the side plastic panels and overhead etc! Thanks for asking....didn't mean to forget that part!
-
Does anyone know the thickness of the panels in the Mooney? I don't have a think to check the exact thickness and even if I did it's at the airport! Thanks!

Is it in nut tree right now?

Sometimes I like these kind of questions. Makes me go figure it out! I talked to Jessica at the Jet center and this is what she said. If you fly in to pick someone up and then leave it will cost you $20 OR 10 gallons of fuel/or as much as you can take up to 10 gallons ( currently FS$6.08--not bad and 31 Cents cheaper than Sac full service). Then you have 2 options. You can either arrive earlier than your friend and use the crew car to pick them up....OR... there is a shuttle that can take them. Of course a Taxi would too i'm sure. That number is (916)428-8292 http://airnav.com/airport/KSMF Also, Sac international is friendly. I've done touch & Go's and approaches. They are pretty easy going. Might have to keep up your speed. Request runway 16R or 34L to get to the FBO. Hope that helps!

I think you're alone on this one. I would much rather speed and wearing a headset. Speed = time and time =Money. Sound=annoyance.......which I can dampen with a headset! Edit: I love the sound of airplanes! haha

Here's to the Mother ****ing FAA
piperpainter replied to jkhirsch's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
The elevator is the biggest concern if you ask me. The rest is probably nit picking. He sees the wings...okay whatev...then more then he sees the elevator and.....okay that's it....gotta send notice. Sucky either way -
I have one and I absolutley love it! It's one of the best investments I've made. I have it tied to the GPS too so it gives me great info. Remember that chief aircraft doesn't have taxes!

I've just got here. First of all: thank you

So I have the Brittain Turn coordinator. Back in Dec 2012 the things internal motor failed, the vacuum didn't work anymore because the rotor got jammed. They did a great job and fixed the damage. However here I am in Feb of 2014 not 1.2 years later and the damn thing has failed again. This time it was the electric motor because I can here a hum, but no spin. Also it works with the vacuum but if I disconnect the vacuum it's dead weight. My question is this, has anyone else had failures like this? It's very frustrating to keep pulling stuff out and sending it here and there! Thanks! V/R Bryan

Slip it, slip it real good!!!
-
Yes! I have a C and the only difference is the 20 more HP you have. I do full slips all the time and have full control. Just keep your nose down and speed up. I was doing them all the way down final, and even to slow over the runway! If I didn't slip with full flaps, I wouldn't be able to get into some of the crazy places I go!

We all know that airports are not a dime a dozen and they are closing all the time. Most the time we have a fight with the local community, or some other jerk trying to close things. But in this case the airport is owned by people that don't even fly, but want to keep the airport open. They just need some funds to help them do so. I think that out of all of those in the pilot/aviation community we could help them out if everyone donates. There is a couple articles below on what is going on. Avweb had no links so I emailed them. When i went to the site to donate they had only a way to mail the information in. ~~~~~UPDATE!~~~~~ You can donate through paypal now! So I called and talked to the Julie Bower who is running everything, I asked her if she is going to have a paypal, or some easy way to pay and she said it's in the works. I know the easier the better! For now though you can go to the link below and donate. You do not have to send that paper though if you don't want to. Go to your online banking and have the bank send a check!! That's what I did! At least do that until the easier methods are avialable. Below is a link to the donate site, then facebook and others! They need $60,000. Let's help make this happen. Maybe if they get more they can buy some bikes to ride into town! http://oceanridgeairport.org/donate/ http://www.aopa.org/News-and-Video/All- ... Of general interest....not specifically Mooney related
piperpainter replied to Mooneymite's topic in General Mooney Talk
A big part is at 3:41:53 about rest being tired! Goes till about 3:43:34.3 Way high at the FAF, high sink rate, turned the autopilot off...just lots of wrong. From the reading it sounds like they where at 3500ft when 1 mile from the FAF, which has an altitude of 2500ft. They continued to be high, so they had a high sink rate down the approach. They should have gone around early in the approach, especially in actual IMC. All in all, a very sad ending.- 8 replies

Commercial Rating Tips for the Modern Pilot
piperpainter replied to Txbyker's topic in General Mooney Talk
I 100% agree with you that the video's are a mix of old, older and then randomly new! Martha & John get 20 years younger and older all in the same topic! Anyway, it did pretty good for me and I got my sign off paper and will be doing my Commercial written soon I hope. I am going to be starting my multi-CFI etc. Hopefully I can start offering instruction in Mooney's on the side. I think if you get through the show, and the test you can throw the E6B stuff back to the curb...or go digital! -
'62 M20C with spin-on filter - dipstick accuracy
piperpainter replied to DaveL's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I originally used 100W (red) and avblend in my engine. One day a friend said that the 100W Plus had the additive in it, so I switched it. My Lycoming O-360 A1D hated it and started drinking a quart every 2-3 hrs and it freaked me out. I switched back to 100W (red) and avblend and it was happy again and I burn about a quart every 4-8 hours depending on what type of flying I am doing. So if you switched oil recently or changed something, change it back. Or maybe move to 100W and the negine will probably be happy again.
