Foreflight Legal for IFR Navigation?
carusoam replied to 201er's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
To have a panel device communicate position with your iPad… Look for it to have WiFi or BlueTooth out capabilities… There are a couple of Transponder devices that may do this… Expect that Garmin and it’s navigation app might have put in the extra effort to make this a reality… Garmin would prefer to sell installed equipment… than an iPad app… Getting BT to work from the back of the plane has had its issues…as well…. Foreflight Legal for IFR Navigation?
carusoam replied to 201er's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Foreflight has the ability to put a waas accurate blue dot on an approach plate… Indicating your location on the plate… Really good for situational awareness… not so good for actual navigation… unless it’s the only thing you got left… But, iPads have a way of running out of power at the worst times… Be ready to whip out the next i-device and cord as needed… Keep in mind… it isn’t mirroring anything on the instrument panel… It will require a WAAS source that is often a low cost portable device like a stratus… Be on the lookout for portable ADSB -in devices… you get weather and traffic with them… hundreds of these are used around here… maybe even thousands… lately they come with CO monitors too… PP thoughts only, not a cfii… Best regards, -a- -
Plenty of room for you two… back seat space of a short body Mooney will be tough if you have two big backseaters… We traded in our M20C for a big Mooney when the kids got bigger… See Day1 of kids meeting the new plane in my avatar…. Best regards, -a-

m20c Par36 or Par46 landing light?
carusoam replied to rwabdu's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
If they are small enough to mount in the wing’s leading edge… 36 If they are so big they only fit in the nose… 46 if you have two in the place that used to have a 46, that is a pair of 36s… If you want to use a measuring device.. One is three inches and some parts… the other is four inches and some parts… Let’s invite the light guru to supply an answer…. @OSUAV8TER Chances are… from the pic in your avatar… you have one landing light on the nose… none in the wings. Keep in mind… our light guru reps Whelen lights… so you might get a sales speech and an actual comparison with the other lights… much better than guessing… Best regards, -a- -
Around 300 LBs… you start to run out of space, depending who is next to you… Around 6’6… with short legs… you start leaning the chair back… When it comes to single engine aircraft…. Mooneys aren’t small… they just took out the space under the seat! Best regards, -a-

Rainy days and filing Jepp plates go together… Flight school blues… -a- -
There is a search menu… if your Boolean logic isn’t up to speed… But, the MS search is challenged by three letter words… Best to go to google if able… Best regards, -a-

Norwood comes up in conversation every now and then… at least it was an MSC or still is…. Weber is always a good selection… There is a current conversation for mid-Atlantic… you might want to follow along and see what falls out… Flying far for an annual isn’t always recommended… too many bumps in that scheduling road… Best regards, -a-

It’s tough selecting the best installer option… Garmin shop on the home field… or Garmin shop that did a nice Mooney panel 50nm away… or Garmin shop in Florida with best price… I have known my favorite avionics tech for almost 30years… we were young once… There must be 1k wires that can be the challenge… 80-100AMUs… makes a fancy color panel! -a-

N2953L off runway at Fort Meade, MD
carusoam replied to DXB's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
Let’s invite @jrod_stat to see what water in a tank can do… (in a current conversation) The M20C is a bit unique… its carb bowl is quite large. If you shut the fuel tank off by setting it to both…. The actual surprise doesn’t show up for a minute or so… while taxiing towards the run up area… My first lesson in Mooneys came with transition from a C152… I also learned that sharing what I was doing with the other pilot might be a good idea as well…. The darn fuel selector switch was so worn… it didn’t have any ‘click’ left to denote the proper position… aka detents Best regards, -a- -
Jrod, You are just joking, right? 1) You bought a plane built several decades ago… 2) From a guy several hours away… 3) With a common challenge that often appears between annual inspections… 4) And a big issue of a known unusable fuel tank on one side… 5) You didn’t think to trade dough for keys in person was important…? A few minutes walking around the lane with the old owner is worth a ton… building a small relationship with that guy so he takes your next phone call is brilliant…. 6) believed in not sumping a tank because you just filled it…. (This is just il-advised beyond anything else you will ever do.) 7) Thought flying a plane with only one tank available was a good idea… and didn’t take extra precautions to make sure it truly worked right. 8) Any fuel issues…first step, switch tanks… now what? 9) Know that leaky fuel caps are a common challenge… fixed at annual. Fixed forever with modern O-rings… 10) Are your O-rings black, or blue? 11) it is time to stop looking at the riddled past… and start looking forward to the future… You have plenty of work to do for yourself… get on it! 12) Have you ever heard of transition training? 13) Why did you not seek actual training from somebody with qualified Mooney experience for this first flight home? 14) Is this a case of you didn’t know what you didn’t know? 15) Now, you are fully annoyed by me… I welcome you to hang out and discuss all the things you want to learn… 16) I wrote a page yesterday about sumping tanks and how much water can get by the fuel cap in a single rainstorm… If you didn’t see it… who are you going to sue? 17) When you gain a few years of experience… you will recognize when it is time to sue… and when it is too expensive to expect getting anything that way… If you ever bought a new device that is covered by warranty, or a used device that is covered by some consumer protection… there is a procedure for that… that may involve a lawyer… we have a few lawyers around here. Pre-flown airplanes don’t usually have consumer protection associated with them… Don’t go it alone… Go MS! PP thoughts only, not a lawyer… but, I have bought many used machines before… using due diligence. You had a second brain in your plane… what was that brain saying? Best regards, -a- Chances are high Jrod didn’t get past line three of my post… if he did, he will do alright in time… If he didn’t… he is bound to fall for the next trap laid out by this less than perfect plane… How did I do Jrod?

KFC 150 Strange behavior altitude hold / preselect.
carusoam replied to redbaron1982's topic in General Mooney Talk
I wonder if there is a capacitor slowly degrading that is responsible for alt hold… The KFC series might be more modern than the old capacitor prone devices… KAP/KFC150s are early digital compared to the KFC200… Best regards, -a- -
Yikes… Have you found Trek Lawler? Often found hanging around BT… -a-

How else are they going to make a recommendation? That’s the kind of recommendations I’m looking for…. First hand. Of course there are the panels that don’t generate much of a recommendation…. Like a pair of KX155s and a KLN90B… It was hot pre-WAAS in the 90s!!! Best regards, -a- -

Great details RB! Lets invite @Jake@BevanAviation to stop by… (KFC150 alt hold challenge) Best regards, -a- -
Spruce usually has two lengths… One too long and one too short… Use the too long one until you can get one from your favorite MSC… PP thoughts only, experience generated from my old M20C… Best regards, -a-

While you are there… There is a vent hole in the injector… If it doesn’t get oriented properly… It tends to get fuel leaked out of it while flying… (or after shut down…) Leaving the dark blue stains… randomly placed around the area… PP thoughts only, not a mechanic… stuff I have seen pics of around here… Best regards, -a-

Seriously approaching buying a new plane
carusoam replied to mkerian10's topic in General Mooney Talk
You didn’t make a comment when I thoughtfully penned…. ‘The normal progression’ a few posts up. i didn’t even earn a single like for the effort I put in. copied here for easy reading… Normal progression… 1) Trainer towards 100hrs… 2) Four cylinder Mooney… for a few 100 more hours… 3) Turbo Mooney… the flight levels take on a whole new level of preparation… 4) Super high performance Mooney (around 300 hp) 5) Combine 3&4… get Acclaim! (End Goal) It isn’t gear up landings I’m concerned with… it’s loss of life early in one’s ownership experience that are disheartening… Some people take the training more seriously and use check lists and do WnB calculations… long after their training days have faded… Others don’t hang out in an online type club… But, hazing a new guy with dreams… isn’t exactly the way to motivate them to do things that are good for them… Some people have Air Force budgets… and train religiously. Others are more budget and time constrained… you get one post to get to know somebody, and convey your concerns… If you lead with ‘flying is expensive and kills you…’. and give examples… because you can…. The reader will just go somewhere else to find what he is looking for. Of course… complaining about what other MSers say… makes us all look like we have no idea what we are saying… We can sugar coat things and say air force pilots train in turbine planes… with no prior experience. Or point out all of the successful people that have trained in their Long Bodies… The youngest person that flew solo around the world… did it in his dad’s Ovation…. Not too many years ago… Mike’s picture of the kid and a race car that learned to fly in a high performance long body Mooney is real…! The goofiest GU occurrence around here was an experienced MSer with an instructor on board who both got distracted… GUs aren’t a new guy with too much airplane… GUs are an ordinary person that didn’t successfully complete one of three standard gumps checks… What’s your suggestion to this time honored challenge…? Know that you have to keep the reader involved… to ever get to the discussion on distraction and how it works… PP thoughts only, not a social psychologist… Best regards, -a- -

As the OP you have the ability to delete a thread… It can be found by editing the first post of the thread…. Should have a delete option or title edit option… Use caution deleting threads… People put some good work into threads… they get disappointed when their work gets erased… Best regards, -a- Best regards, -a-
