six gear collapses & gear ups in one week
carusoam replied to philiplane's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
wait a sec… another Mooney at central Jersey airport, Manville NJ? I just posted a YT video interview with the pilot of the last one…. Best regards, -a- New ownership, reported in March of this year… engine out, on T/O… more of a gear ripped off than a gear up…. https://www.tapinto.net/towns/hillsborough/sections/police-and-fire/articles/plane-taking-off-from-hillsborough-airport-crashes-into-cemetery Inviting @Alan Fox to see if he is familiar with this one… -
Alt Field CB Tripping When PTT is Pressed
carusoam replied to JohnM's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Check to see what the JPI is set for seconds per data point… Newer ones can get one per second… Standard setting is a goofy six seconds… neither will be fast enough to catch this transient with any accuracy… PTTs are a simple switch to ground… See what else is accidentally connected to it…. Reviewing the health of the field wire is a great idea… alternators are known to stop working when the field wire stops being connected…. PP thoughts only, not a mechanic… Best regards, -a- -
Does your set up allow you to see what altitude is being reported? My BK transponder 76C? Has a display of pressure altitude on its face… This would help to minimize the possible sources for the error… Starting from the static system, to the device that puts a number on the pressure… to where that number gets reported next… Sometimes the altimeter is involved with reporting the data, since it is connected to the static system… What is the box called that converts the static pressure to altitude code? faded fuzzy memories of gray codes…. Going to do some touchups to Birdy.

Bummer… Usually, the leading edges take a beating…. Head on impact with rain and snow have a tendency to sand blast the paint… The Camaro looks great… my ‘95 Firebird Formula has been shedding paint for decades… Black under a clear coat… The first place to lose paint was the metal headlight covers…. Then the top surfaces of everything else…. Keeping shaded… things last forever. For large surface areas… people have stripped and painted seam line to seam line…. With pretty good success… Leading edges often get a black line painted on them… to create a seam line… where it is expected to be seen… otherwise you may end up with nice patches that are obvious to the untrained eye… Hence the discussion on clear coats… how well do they hide the added seam lines… Also be on the look out for painting strategies to avoid seam lines… or at least minimize them… Matching paint colors has been covered around here a few times… Best regards, -a- -
My first declared emergency
carusoam replied to gabez's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
Nice thread gabez! Thanks for sharing it. Three things I try to look for before committing to flight… 1) rpm… 2) MP… 3) FF… Confirming aircraft performance after the fact…. 4) Running cloud/ahoy to measure T/O distance… and confirming with climb rate If I have all three… I am most likely producing 100% power as expected… If I have the fourth… all is proven good. Where this falls down… is partial blockage of a fuel injector… The fuel will appear in the other fuel injectors… but not produce full power… Partial blockage of fuel injectors is a bit common around here… an engine monitor is a good way to find them… If you can… download your data from the monitor… up load to Savvy… push the share button… copy the link here… There have been a few reports of turbo MP controllers not working perfectly… the MP data is recorded by the engine monitor… PP thoughts only, not a mechanic… Best regards, -a- -

Clear coat is the first layer to fall off in big flakes after it sits outside in the heat and daylight… Modern automotive paints probably work well for five to ten years in NJ… until the clear coat breaks down… Dark paints are probably the most susceptible to damage… as the temps rise pretty quickly in the sun. Of course… the paint I’m discussing is for the GMs that sit out in my front yard…. If you can… experiment with small areas… get a feel for how well your skills and paint match your expectations…. My M20C’s paint went about 45years getting small areas repaired without looking patchy… no real skill involved. PP thoughts only, not a mechanic… Best regards, -a- -
There was a discussion regarding lubrication around here… earlier today. MP controllers are the first thing to consider… they have a few moving parts that get exhaust temperature hot… There is a particular lubricant for this… called mouse milk… Use early and often… Simple and effective… start there, and see where to go next… PP thoughts only, not a mechanic… Best regards, -a-

M20K overhauled engine RPM and MAP question.
carusoam replied to Skaugi's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
What does the POH say? The POH usually covers normal operations of the plane… So many changes all at once… it is time to check the accuracy of the gauges as well… RPM is easy… there is an aural app for that… it can hear the prop and tell exactly how fast it is turning… MP is kinda easy… it should match the outside pressure when the engine isn’t running… FF if calibrated… should read the documented number as you go down the runway… T/O is max power… for your plane, per its documents… POH and any STCs You should be able to achieve max rpm, Max MP, and Max FF before gaining too much speed… A new prop and engine installation… may take a few hours of tuning things to get right… There is nothing more complex than an M20K’s fuel system… Fortunately, you don’t need a Mooney specific mechanic to handle engine set-ups… Expect some oddities… when using digital engine instruments… you may get some red lights flashing as the rpm exceeds 2700 rpm by 1 rpm… the rules were written before digital instruments were invented… The mechanical controls are good… but not 1rpm precise… PP thoughts only, not a mechanic… Best regards, -a- -
Sooo much opportunity to lose some weight when going digital…. A few pounds at a time… So much opportunity to gain some weight when adding comfort…. Digital avionics weigh far less than the old analog ones… extra vac systems come with a lot of weight… Comfy interior items… fancy leather, and lots of thick foam…. Hidden behind the walls… more foam insulation…. Many upgrades over time… add a bunch of dead wires running everywhere… a few more pounds…. When Re-weighing… following the guidance is important… You don’t want to catch extra fuel and oil pounds when they don’t belong… it is a bit of a challenge to empty every pocket, and remove each tool… but, it’s part of the weighing job. As is leveling…. Good luck… there isn’t much room for getting lighter…. Be careful… there is always room for calculation mistakes…. Best regards, -a-

Garmin GTN650 or Avidyne IFD440
carusoam replied to Desertdoc75's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
The cool thing… Avidyne gives you a decent choice… If for some reason, you are not a big G fan… you can get a decent WAAS based nav/com for a competitive price with all the features normal to the post y2k world… If you look close… VOR and ILS are probably still included… not just simulated via GPS… actual receivers being used when required… all within the same box. Kind of bolted on, or in… ADF and DME… are probably goners…. Best regards, -a- -
Depends on how you shut the engine down… If you set the rpms to 1k… then pull the mixture… The engine runs for a few seconds until the fuel is drained from the lines… To restart… put the fuel back… With an IO550… putting the fuel back takes about a second or two of running the fuel pump… until the FF gauge registers… Then hit the starter as usual… A couple of blades go by, and she fires right up… It isn’t a hot start… no fuel boiling… It isn’t a cold start… no prime required… But, it does require fuel to start… re-fill the lines. Best regards, -a-

The trim switch itself sees a lot of force… especially during go-arounds… there are a couple of micro switches that support the mechanical aspect of the switch… The BK version has seen a ton of discussion around here…. It is a common procedure to swap in new micro switches for maintenance… PP thoughts only, not a mechanic… Best regards, -a-

Parker/Cleveland Master Brake Cylinder
carusoam replied to Garry Edson's topic in General Mooney Talk
If you can’t rebuild the one you have… Consider rebuilding one from another Mooney… a pre-flown part… See if @alan fox @Alan Fox has what you need… If swapping in non-Mooney parts… be on the look out for control interference…. Things are really tight in that area… PP thoughts only, not a mechanic… Best regards, -a- -
Going to do some touchups to Birdy.
carusoam replied to McMooney's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
yes and no… What do you mean by tail? Everything after the tail hinge… is pretty much the tail… 1) it’s it a surface… Y 2) is it attached to a flight control… trim 3) Does it control flight when you move it? Yes Looks like it is a surface… it doesn’t move much… it moves and controls flight and is attached to the rudder pedals and elevator control… Do you have the extended rudder, or just a tail cone? Specific primary flight controls are rudder and elevator… trim isn’t a primary flight control… Tough question… As for adding a clear coat… not done very often… for a few reasons UV resistance, weight… by the time you are done… you have spent a ton of dough… Talk to your paint guy… we have a couple around here… Doesn’t sound like a complete idea yet… how do you add metal flake to a clear coat? Sorry to add so many more questions… Best regards, -a- -
@Mscheuer we might have a guy that knows something about PSEngineering equipment around here… its always good to have his input… it helps sell his awesome equipment. Best regards, -a-

We have one in a Chevy… Trail braking keeps the engine running as it approaches a stop sign… Does the starter have to push through the compression stroke for each start? I imagine that it has to… The starters must be really well built for these…. Best regards, -a-

ROP and LOP as related to "the feel"
carusoam replied to 211º's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Interesting concern… We do have a place to look that up too… Did you mean less accurate? because it’s precision seems to be identical throughout the range as the same needle, rotates in front of the same hash marks, that are equally spread, from one end of the gauge to the other… PIC is part of the precision, as is parallax…. Unlikely less accurate as well… Since the stall speed is probably the most important piece of information delivered by that instrument… Errors in airspeed are pretty well known… because we have a couple that get documented in our POHs… Some of the older Mooney instrument errors are a small bit different than newer Mooney instruments… I May have to look them up later for a nice review…. Best regards, -a- -
Oddly, That seems to have the contact @Gert… A long term member we have been talking with about this project for years… His current advertised price is $80 per donut… Anyone want to ask about availability? I haven’t spoken with Gert lately… Best regards, -a-
