  1. Quote: Phil_M20J I have been flying our Mooney M20J for about 12 years, always in the East. Next June, I hope to fly to Colorado Springs. While there, I hope to take a mountain flying course in our plane. Yesterday, I consulted the performance tables in our POH. The tables give no data above pressure altitude 8,000. That seems to imply that the plane will not climb above that pressure altitude sufficient for takeoff. Can that be correct? Does anyone have high altitude experience with a 201 that will give me a little guideance? Maybe this sea-level pilot has just forgotten how to work those charts.
  2. Looks alot like the General DeWitt Spain airport in Memphis did a couple months ago when I was over there. I hope it all works out OK for you guys!
  3. 6719N- I feel the need to squawk 7500 on this thread...
  4. Quote: Parker_Woodruff Which digital tach do you have?
  5. Yesterday, just before my run up, I noticed the lock nut around the ignition was very loose. I snugged it up a couple rotations and proceeded with the runup. When I switched to my left mag I heard the drop in RPM but my digital tach went from 2000 to 1993 RPM and stayed there with both "mag failed" lights illuminated. I went back to both and no change, right mag no change. Again I could feel the mag drop but the digital tach was frozen on 1993 from the first drop. Nothing I did, even pulling the prop, would make the tach unfreeze. I hit the master, it rebooted and all was fine. Has anybody out there in Mooneyspace land seen this before. I will note that for the last month or so about 1 out of 10 starts when i would turn the key and nothing would happen. I figured it was just a bad ignition switch since the battery and Skytech are fairly new. Could the loose lock nut have cause the ignition to be too loose and short out every now and than on start up? It makes me wonder how/if the tach and ignition issue both had to do with the loose lock nut. BTW the tach is new. I had it installed at my engine OH about 4 months ago and this is the first issue I have seen out of it in the 80 hours since that I have flown behind it.
  6. Quote: Mitch As a child, my father had taken me to a small airport [Harvey Young] just East of Tulsa, OK where a friend of his owned a Mooney.
  7. I shoot for 5 seconds, from the time I turn on the boost pump, and it works great for me. Any less and it seems take a few more blades. I do have a fairly new Skytec on so I'm sure that helps as well.
  8. You may want trim nose down a tad. When I first got my J the old instructor told me to just hold down on the nose wheel when it started bouncing, which turned out to be the wrong advice according to many other Mooney drivers with more hours than I have. On takeoff my trim tab is just a hair above the takeoff setting. If I go much higher than that it does tend to bounce a bit at higher speeds. Experiment with that and see how it works.
  9. OR75- I'm not sure what plane you have and if the setup is the same as my 77J but the best way to do it is just to take your time. It's not that hard to remove and replace but the real challenge comes in safety wiring it back. It's a pain but I think it's also important to check frequently since it will show any large pieces of metal that won't make it to the spin on filter. Once you get the hang of it, it's only a 15-20 minute ordeal that you can do while the oil is draining. Good luck!
  10. jetdriven- That's the only downfall I see to having the Horizon tach, other than that it's a great product. I'm not sure why they made the clock start running at 800 RPM, doesn't make much sense.
  11. I change my oil every 25-30 hours which works out to about every two months. This includes cutting the filter and checking the suction screen as well, per a Mike Busch article I read. The first time around with the screen was a PITB but now that I have done it a few times it's not so bad. All in all from start to finish the oil change takes about 2 hours of working time. The New Pig funnel works wonders for keeping the mess down on all three applications.
  12. A good way to get a couple free knots in cruise is to slide the two front seats full aft. Like clockwork you will see the speed spool up every time. I don't do it much because I don't like the feeling of flying w/o being able to touch the rudder pedals.
  13. I wouldnt even worry about opening it on a "j" model. The ram air was originally a band-aid for a bad design and those flaws got cleaned up with the "j" model. If you do decide to you use it you may see 1/4" of extra manifold pressure wheareas the pre J's will get an extra inch. Its not worth the hassle for me.
  14. Shadrach- Try the new pig form-a- funnel. I've been using it for several years and it's mess free and can catch the oil from the spin on, quick release and the suction screen. Its super flexible and can be manuvered around in the tight spaces Mooney is know for. It's really made the oil changing process much faster and easier. www.formafunnel.com
  15. Yes I honed and re-ringed. I misspoke, I just meant that it was all for naught because soon after that my camshaft went bad and I had to OH. It had nothing to do with the re-ring.
  16. Mazerbase- That shirt is awesome! You could probably make a ton of $ selling that baby at Mooney gatherings:) Yeah, I had a dealing with him when I purchased my plane. Long story short it was a terrible experience. Many other Mooneyspace users have had issues as well. Love the shirt, kep rocking it!
  17. The "Venice Guys"... uuggghhhhhh!!
  18. Here's a nice avaition site to browse when you get bored... www.livingwithyourplane.com
  19. Lood- I had the same problem that you described with high oil consuption of 1 qt per 2 hours. I had them pulled and honed and saw my oil consumption dropquite a bit. Needless to say a short time later my engine started making metal so I had it OH'd and got new cylinders with the overhaul.
  20. How long does it take for the metals and silicon content to get back to normal after an OH? I just got my first oil analysis back (56 hours on engine/ 24 on oil/ 1 quart of makeup oil was added) and the aluminum, copper and silicon were a little high. The lab says it's normal but didn't say how long I should expect this for. The oil suction screen was clean as a whistle. Anybody that has any knowledge on this feel free to chime in.
  21. Gunderbear- I may be flying to Little Rock on Wednesday, not sure yet. Shoot me an email Wednesday morning and we'll try to hook up. bodiebell@aol.com
  22. Bill- About a year ago a friend of mine was looking to partner with a guy named Jim Deidiker (40MJ) who is based here at the Rogers airport. I don't know the guy personally, but i do know from my friends dealings with him that he flies a lot and has good maintenance as well. The plane is a early 90's J I believe. Anytime you are in the neighborhood swing by my hanger, I'm based on the north side of the field by Beaver Lake FBO. Good luck!
  23. Gunderbear- I'm based at ROG if you ever want to come by and take a ride in PX. What model are you looking to buy?
  24. Not sure, but they operate as they should full open or closed. Just nothing in between.
  25. You may want to give the Mooney organization, MAPA, a call and see if they can suggest someone. When I bought my J they recommended a Mooney instructor here in Arkansas. 210-525-8088. Talk to Lela.
