  1. rorythedog- Thanks for the heads up, I'll give them a call. I would like a shop that is close by if the need of warranty work comes up and both locations are just a quick flight from me. I'm also considering Robert Smith in Mena. He has been highly recommended by numerous people and does quite a bit of work for Jimmy Garrison from what I hear. Either way, it's alot of $ but I'm pretty excited about having a strong, new engine to fly behind.
  2. I've decided to go ahead and get an overhaul being that my engine is getting old, tired and making metal. One shop I am talking to mentioned the option of flow balancing which will cost another $900 and give me a little more horse power, 10 I believe, and a smoother running, cooler engine. Have any of you done this or know much about it? If so what is your opinion on the issue?

  4. Ok so my filter has been showing alot of metal the last 6 mos/110 hrs. Just engine cracked open and it looks like it needs a major. I'm going to look into all options and compare factory new, factory OH and a good shop OH. Could those of you that have been through this give me some shops to look into. I live in Arkansas so I will give the shop in Mena a shot being that they are just down the road and seem to have a good rep.
  5. Joe- I learned to fly in a Cherokee 140 and had 200 hours in it when I bought my J. I now have right at 330 hours in my Mooney in the last 24 months and could not ever imagine going back. I do not notice any difference in cabin size/comfort vs the Cherokee. As far as operating out of FTG and FNL I have flown out of both right at gross weight in August and have had no problems. Good luck in the hunt.
  6. JoeSpeed- Thanks for the link. Talked to LASAR and they said that the hole on either side of the shock disc is a heat release point from when the tubing was welded. The small, mushroom shaped hardware is just something to stop up the hole with.
  7. While cleaning the belly and landing gear last night I noticed something that looked amiss on my nose gear. While looking at it from behind there is a small screw type apparatus to the right of the shock disc. To the left, in the same position is an empty hole. I assume the screw should be here as well. So what is the name of this , can I install it myself and what does it do? I'm guessing I can get it from the usual Mooney supplier suspects. Thanks...
  8. I wish I could make the event guys. I was in Ft.Collins just this week in my Mooney but had to get back for prior obligations. I did run into a guy in Lake City, Ks that was on his way to the show. He was flying a bi wing from Atlanta and made a comment about the small amount of fuel that I needed to get back to Arkansas compared with his 5mpg/ 100 knot airplane. He is spending alot of dough, just on gas, to get to the show and back. Quote: FlyingAggie UPDATE: Sorry to report that the B29 has developed engine problems and won't be at the Rocky Mountain Regional Fly-in. They are substituting a B24. The notice below was posted on the fly-in's web site. It should still be a great airshow and fly-in. We have had only five people register for the event: Me Scott S John C Russ A Buzz I Is anyone else planning to attend?
  9. Quote: craigsteffen Hi, Fairly new (2007) low-time pilot here. I've gotten interested in Mooneys in the last year. Just yesterday I ran across this web site. My quick question--what's the significance of this being the last of Mr. Manthey's maintenance classes? Will there be more classes taught by other people? I'd love to go someplace to get a look at the insides of various Mooneys, but that's coming up quick. It would be far better for my schedule and finances to wait until next year. Is there any reason for me to work hard to go to this even specifically? Thanks for any information/advice.
  10. Laytonl- Thanks for the heads up on the screen location. I've always changed my oil, I have just been rather lazy about pulling the screen to check for the big, scary chunks that don't make it to the spin on filter. As to not making a mess.... I have been using a product called form-a-funnel, manufactured by a company called New Pig, and I have not spilled a drop in over a year since I have been using the product. I use it for pulling the filter and for pulling the quick drain and walking away for a few hours while it drains. Get the 2' one as it seems to work better than the shorter versions. Here's a clip showing it in use... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43h8fZ-65PY

  12. Where is the oil pickup screen for my 77' J located? I've got a maint manuel on cd but can't seem to track the location down. Changing the oil tomorrow and want to pull it for inspection per Mike Busch's recommendations on Lycomings.

  14. While using the approach plates do they have to be "saved" prior to losing internet connectivity? While at altitude I can't pull up approaches that I have not previously saved/ opened. This could be a problem if I had to shoot an approach at an unplanned airport, which is why I still carry paper as a backup. One other thing I noticed on a recent flight to the east coast was that the georeferencing on the charts was fairly spotty at best. It would track me for a few minutes than a message would pop up saying something to the effect that "Foreflight had lost connectivity". Not the end of the world, just a little frustrating. Any imput would be appreciated. Thanks!
  15. For what it's worth the key to my padlock on the hanger opens my baggage door... Weird
  16. I have a little bit of black grit that comes out when I sump. Its been there since I bought the plane. I've put 300 hrs on it in the year and a half I've owned it and the amount of grit has stayed constant. Wet wingologists sealed the tanks about 5 yrs ago and I have no leaks. I'm going to have Maxwell look at it at my next annual
  17. You gotta love the cover on this month's issue of "Flying" with the 201 gracing the front. It's always nice when one of our's gets a little recognition. I have not read the article yet but will be doing so soon. Hopefully none of the misconceptions of the Mooney make it into print!
  18. George, I bought the portable unit made by ACR Electronics for about $300. It has to be manually activated of course but I am able to use it skiing, biking and backpacking as well. I carry in in the pocket of my front seat for quick access if need be.
  19. I'll be taking off to Northern New York soon (OGS) and would like to know if there are any descent on airport restaurants along my route of flight in the Cleveland area, or close by.
  20. I'm kind of going through the same issue. I've got the Precise Flight system on my plane but have no placards with what engine settings to use at certain altitudes. Do I need to disable the regular system and go fly the plane using the standby system to do this?
  21. Congrats Phillip and welcome to Mooneyspace! Hurry home and get her back in shape.
  22. A few clairifications please. First of all I have never used Foreflight, yeah, i know slap me! What, in a nutshell, does it do that fltplan.com or the AOPA flight planning site will not? I have also seen where some have downloaded Sky Charts Pro and used this on the iPad. How do these differ from the Foreflight maps and charts? Thanks again!
  23. Looks good Mitch! I just got the 64GB 3G last night and am looking forward to using it. Not sure how/if I will mount it due to my 496 which is on the pilot's yoke.
  24. Thanks for tthe quick response guys, greatly appreciated!
  25. Please forgive my non techie thick headedness but I am still a little confused on which iPad (3g or not) would fit me best. The main reason (aviation wise) I am wanting it is for the approach plates and geo referencing on the sectionals and IFR charts. I know 3g is recommended by some but than I read Jeff S saying the GPS worked fine w/o the 3g. Thanks in advance for any help. Looking at buying in the next day or so and am looking forward to using it for flight as well as numerous other daily mundane activities.
