  1. when I was a non-equity partner we added up all the cost of operation and I paid an up front once a year sum for fixed costs like hangar, insurance, annual, consumables (tires, oil, etc) then I paid an hourly rate when I flew which included the engine reserve. Owner paid all upgrades and items that added value to the airplane. Owner was responsible for maintaining an airworthy airplane.
  2. I fear that might have been a major factor in this accident. Looking at the track the plane remained above the ceiling until over the airport. There was no visual way to know that. Using a tablet he might have attempted to descend at that point (look at the flight track).
  3. does anyone know the cloud tops at the time ? It is a common belief among VFR pilots that they can fly the lateral guidance of the approach at an altitude above the clouds and then spiral down over the airport to break out in visual conditions for a landing.
  4. did you listen to the tapes? should be talking to Detroit approach. only about 3hours in flight with a tail wind, should not have been an issue
  5. the shell of the connector is missing ... there should be a cover over the black part of the connector where the wires are coming out. The back of the shell clamps over the wires to prevent them from pulling out of the black part and to protect the connection. Those wires should be secured and tie wrapped for support.
  6. You don't say if this worked before and quit or if it never worked ... Is it a new installation?
  7. does the STEC 55x pass the self test ?
  8. learned condition from mobile phones and computers/tablets.
  9. if it were that easy/cheap to fix damaged airplanes, our insurance rates would be much, much lower.
  10. yes, they will fit but the JPI will have to be long side up using the existing holes in the panel. You might get it in long side across but you will have to cut the panel hole for the JPI more to the right and you will loose that space near the center stack.
  11. you need at least 27.0 gph fuel flow for take-off and climb. So hotter climates need more than that. Beware of over heating the #5 cylinder behind the alternator. The air flow is restricted and this cylinder will exceed 400°F quickly in a climb. There is a "pixie hole" fix to help with this cooling described elsewhere on MooneySpace.

  13. you know the tanks will hold 108 gallons.
  14. You could judge this very easily based on what you see in accumulation on the approach. If it is building rapidly wait as long as you can to slow down. If is is "normal" accumulation or slight, you can slow down sooner. I would consider the icing in the pictures above if only 10 minutes exposure as severe but also a testament to the ability of the TKS to do its job.

In order to minimize ice accumulations on unprotected lower surfaces, maintain a minimum speed of 120 KIAS during operations in icing conditions
  16. received this in the mail today 12-07-2020 Notice of Conditional Policy Renewal **note - my policy does not expire until late in March, 2021 blah, blah, blah, "Your premium will increase twenty five percent (25%) or more. It is also possible that you will no longer meet our underwriting qualifications for renewal. " blah, blah, blah.
  17. No one seems to know for sure. There are multiple reasons for cylinder replacement on these engines. I have three (3) original ones now at 2000 hours. The other three were replaced for three separate reasons. #5 cylinder was replace because of high temp due to the alternator cooling issue (stuck rings). #2 was replaced for a crack between the fuel injector and the top spark plug hole and #4 was replace initially for burned valve but the inspection found an internal crack in the exhaust port.
  18. Are Tempest Fine Wire plugs approved for the IO-550G engine ?
  19. How many years has the FAA been pretending to certify a new unleaded aviation fuel ? G100UL has passed all but a tiny few, insignificant tests but the FAA will not move on it.
  20. Is the wing repair signed off and approved in the logbooks or is an approval still required ?
  21. Here is the data from my JPI830 for the different settings. I was wrong above, the altitude was 3500' autopilot was holding heading and altitude MP - RPM - MPG LOP settings 25 - 2500 - 12.6 25 - 2400 - 13.2 25 - 2300 - 13.8 25 - 2200 - 14.3 24 - 2400 - 12.3 24 - 2300 - 13.6 24 - 2200 - 14.5 23 - 2400 - 12.3 23 - 2300 - 13.1 23 - 2200 - 13.8 ROP settings 25 - 2500 - 9.2 25 - 2400 - 8.8 24 - 2500 - 9.5 24 - 2400 - 10.0 24 - 2300 - 10.4 24 - 2200 - 11.1 there are a couple of reading that don't follow the trend and these might have been due to changing ground speeds but the trend is clear, higher MP and lower RPM gives you better fuel efficiency.
  22. I did some quick comparisons on a one hour trip at 4000' which allowed changes to both MP and RPM. In all combinations the FF was lower when the MP was high and the RPM was low.
  23. these prices only apply to those that already have the G5s installed - right ?
  24. the best kept secret for buying an early Ovation is to get the Eagle instead. Exact same airframe and if upgraded with HP/Fuel capacity/Gross weight it becomes an exceptional buy.
  25. yes, but it needs to function accurately i.e. mounted correctly.
