So what I’m reading is, the oil flows thru the oil cooler before being filtered? Also, what are the dotted lines on the prop governor? I can’t tell direction of flow. (The reason for my inquiry here is to determine the vulnerability of cam/tappet wear particles entering oil cooler or prop governor, or it filtration happens between the pickup and the 2 systems)

I don’t think the AP question has been answered; I believe the AP of choice down there is Phil Jiminez. Or so I recall reading.

That prop is pretty

@PT20J was this drawn before oil filters were standard? It doesn’t show it as part of the system, unless you should basically consider the screen as the filter?

Anyone know where I would find an oil flow diagram for an IO-360? A few minutes of searching the Google didn't produce what I was looking for. Basically, how the oil is routed from bottom to top.

Calling All Experts! First Time Mooney Buyer Needs Help!
201Steve replied to BobCW's topic in General Mooney Talk
+1 for low interest rates. inflation will probably exceed the cost of your loan at the rate the fed is running the press. I always recommend going above and beyond your first and second budget revision. I hate debt and I hate large loans, but I think I’m this case, it’s worth it and you make out better in the end. I think if you can setup your loan, make your down payment, and have $20-30k cash in a separate account for the guaranteed surprises, it makes all the numbers a bit cleaner. Hoard the cash to pay for the surprises in full, while keeping the bulk of your loan protected by a secure, low interest loan. The opposite would be being cash poor, and then paying a $25,000 shop bill with your credit card to stay flying. You’ll get destroyed by interest. Think “metal in filter” engine Teardowns. -Not an expert on any thing, but a fierce contender in many thing. -
Wow... the things you never notice. What is that, herd influence? You just assume it’s correct bc everyone else is doing it?

I just bought a SPOT gen4 SAT messenger with GPS today at Bass Pro Shop with a Christmas gift card I got. I’ve been to Bahamas and will go back. slowly adding to my water ditch pack. The raft is the hardest justification for a short time out of glide range. Can rent, but I can make it in under 3 hours from home base. It’s an extra stop. They are expensive. I’ve considered a pool raft and a Co2 cartridge

5th Partner Wanted, M20J/K, Based KAPA, $27k Buy In
201Steve replied to tuccio's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
If you’ve got 5 people splitting the bill on everything y’all need to quit pinching pennies and buy the slickest ride out there! Each person throws another 5 grand and you can pretty much get whatever you want. You seem like a numbers guy having a precise figure at 117k, but if you can figure out the logistics of a massive partnership you can figure out how to make everyone much happier by getting off the pocket book another couple thousand.- 19 replies

Metal in Filter, Oil Analysis, and New Trend *With final results

It is curious for sure. I found it interesting that, according to Dave Jewell, most of the compromised lifter faces are found on the front two cylinders, closest to the propellor. Mine were the the opposite, cylinders 3&4 closest to pilot. I probed him why that would be the case, why there is a trend in position of affected (or infected) positions and he had no good response. Simply that it was a trend. We also discussed the chicken/egg scenario. Are there scenarios that a cam lobe would deteriorate a lifter face, or is it always lifter face deteriorates cam. Unanswered questions. When I retire in 30 years I’ll get creative in controlled experiments and report back. But I may not care by then. -
The insurance is but a small portion of the ownership cost. I had low time, no complex, nothing and it was relatively expensive first year. The delta, however, was the cheapest thing for the year! That said, I plowed through 200 hours and an instrument rating in year one and it was my incentive to save $1,500 the next year. Felt like I got a discount on my IR! Or a discount on the flight time! Alas... it’s a drop in the bucket.

I agree. That isn’t an inclusive list and I doubt it’s updated often if ever

Has anyone seen my engine? Lost in shipment.
201Steve replied to JamesMooney's topic in General Mooney Talk
I run a trucking company. I do not do LTL van shipments, but I do get a good bit of business from companies who avoid them like the plague. Instead of shipping with YRC or similar, where it will be cross docked and beat into a bloody pulp, they’ll have me run it on a dedicated straight truck. We call them hotshots, but they are essentially F-350’s with either a van or a flatbed trailer. It makes sense for their products, as they ship long girder beams averaging 20-30’ long, so the extra money they pay to keep it dedicated isn’t too bad, as it’s a relatively bulky product already (justifying its own truck). LTL guys have a shit job. It’s absolute chaos and I feel their pain, but what is inexcusable is their complete lack of responsibility. They pretty much hide their insurance policies. The general liability and auto liability policies are public record, but their cargo insurer , which isn’t always the same, is not. -
Metal in Filter, Oil Analysis, and New Trend *With final results
201Steve replied to 201Steve's topic in General Mooney Talk
The last one, which was measured only 5 operation hours previous to the Teardown (28 on the oil) was 94ppm. This is all good feedback and hopefully helpful to someone when they are trying to diagnose similar problems/seeing similar trends. -

There is a Whelen dealer here. I forget the name. Maybe the mayor @carusoam can tag them.

Cirrus Delivers 8,000th Aircraft Special Edition
201Steve replied to V1VRV2's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Fair enough. The only way to settle this is to attach a release mechanism to the gear assembly and ditch it in flight. Are there any Diamond or Cirrus Owners in the room willing to volunteer to settle it once and for all? -
Cirrus Delivers 8,000th Aircraft Special Edition
201Steve replied to V1VRV2's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Diamond website lists it’s TOP speed at 14k feet being 142kts. I can get 142kts in the worst possible cruise conditions. More typically, 157. So that’s 15 knots slower, and the empty weight is 1740 lbs. same as my Mooney. So.... it’s not lighter, it’s not almost as fast. Where does that leave us? It’s easier to get into. -

I am simply a know nothing speculator, but I don’t buy that assessment. I think the company needs a neat way to explain the real reason the gear doesn’t suck up. To make it dumb ass proof. But, you can’t SAY that... you just make something ridiculous up like super computers did it and decided three legs hanging in the wind is totally fine. It beats having to say, we don’t trust you idiots to select the gear, wrecking our brand, and tarnishing our reputation of safety. That or the original design, built with economy in mind, can’t be retrofitted to add the feature. There’s a reason the super computer hasn’t deemed wheel pants and welded gears sufficient for a G650. (Different aircraft, blah blah blah, I’m sticking my head in the sand and choosing not to believe!)
