I was just browsing the site for tips on a J model ram air removal, which reminded me of a potential carbon fiber design being discussed by the factory... Which led me onto the Mooney website for updates on it , seems it’s still been left pretty much untouched since the late 2020 push. We had a brief check in from @Jonnya few months ago... Is he waiting on Oshkosh to reveal the next Mooney coffee mug to be added to the website...? Just teasin Jonny, sorta.

“Preventative” Maintenance & This Flying Season

I just came out of engine overhaul and I suspect a glazed cylinder. I’ve been running the crap out of it at 75% power for 35 hours and “supposedly” the initial ground run at the OH shop was minimal, and they flew it for an hour at 75+%. So, it appears there’s more than one way for it to happen, even if you do everything right (supposedly). We’ll see.

“Preventative” Maintenance & This Flying Season
201Steve replied to Trenta's topic in General Mooney Talk
I had that noise just last week. My window caulk only a year old. Mooney too fast for adhesion.... =) I’m with you on keep dry religion, but I’ve found there are some attention to detail things that any A&P will never do it as well as you, alas, I will strip and caulk myself. Some use tank sealant, others use a specific caulk, which formula eludes me at the moment. Someone will chime in momentarily. P something and a number, I believe. There is a method to the madness, outlined in great detail in other threads. Dawn dish soap, tape, etc.... got nothing on the grass strip theories. -
I was thinking about it. What’s your plan? Build and fly? Flip?

Should be around $1,500 rough estimate

Get that thing in the air for the sake of your sale and the bird itself. -
Camguard Use in Turbo charged Lycomings
201Steve replied to tls pilot's topic in Mooney Bravo Owners
Is this the reason some turbo drivers let the engine idle for 5 mins before shutdown? I think it’s in the ROCKET poh. I’ve heard some folks say it’s useless and others who swear by it. Never have delved not the “why”. I may be an adopter of the notion it’s an old wives tail if I had to sit idle on the Georgia asphalt for 5 minutes longer in the Summer. -
My ‘77 J did not have one when I got it. Upon further review, The original paperwork from the airplane shows... from the factory, no step! speed mod or not, it looks better without it IMO. Cleaner look. I don’t miss it 99% of time but older people do struggle a bit and it’s sometimes a thing, but... what do they say, buy for 80% of your mission? The foldable step is nice in theory, but not practical since pilot has to get in first. Unless you just have them stand on the wing and squeeze around them.

Those were my words and I was referring to one specific article that was not yours in an attempt to generalize my thoughts on the decision making of who/what was being written about in the magazine. I have not seen the latest issue yet. Thanks for contributing to it, it is more than I can claim.

I thought the pic was funny, the guys on the range are just carrying on. Nothing to see here folks....

Did you buy the J with the wings sawed off?

Garden hose! Who’d have thought!! Thanks for the clarification. You didn’t mention the one I was most interested in, the gloves. Did you make them? Or are they for getting away with a crime? @GEE-BEE AEROPRODUCTS

I bought flex baffle and ducts from Gee Bee. For his cryptic writing style and such, dude does not play. I received the stuff immediately and it all appears of fantastic quality. ESP the duct, wow. I also got what I suppose is some complimentary goodies and others I have no clue about. round gaskets- 2 sizes. No clue neat flexible driver. for clamps? a pair of gloves? Huh? a sample piece of... door seal? sample zerk fittings? sample nipple cover? Also not sure what hardware is supposed to be for what. Will have to get some help. Looking forward to the install! Thanks @GEE-BEE AEROPRODUCTS

I haven’t read all the responses, but if you don’t think you can slow it down without gear, prove it to yourself that you can. I made 3 approaches to land, intentionally leaving the gear up, just to see how it felt. Go around approx 100’ AGL. It can easily be done and easily not noticed.

I’ve always heard, and from my own experience, that they cross control just fine. I don’t know who Ralph Simile is, but There has been some lack luster writing in that last couple issues IMO.

Perhaps some best of the best Mooneyspace comedy on this thread.

I’m just saying. For me, 2 years ago, it was a whoopdy doo. There are a lot of penny pinching CB’s around here and there that are upset by the principal of the matter more than anything. (Nothing but love people!) Just see for yourself. Get two quotes of similar year and hull coverage of a fixed vs complex. My experience was, the delta between a fixed gear premium and a complex premium with (at the time) 150 hrs TT all in a Skyhawk, was like $600 /year difference. I’ve had $600 drop out my pocket just looking through the Spruce catalog. $600 is a rounding error for the last 3 times I’ve been to the shop. $600 is the difference between an A20 and a David Clarke. $600 is 2 hours tach time.

Insurance... should be the last, very minor, variable. $1800 vs $2500 whoopdy doo. You needed a new set of spark plugs or a new iPad. Bout the same and about the cheapest. Am I wrong?

I had this experience in Albuquerque and El Paso last year when I took my J coast to coast. Never been much out of 1,000’ elevations and we were at near gross. I was happy to have 8,000 foot runways during the experience. It was hotter than hell in July, I felt like airspeed sat at 60 knots before rotation for an eternity. Plane started flying, lost ground effect accidentally, and sank back down 2’ above the runway. Thought we were going to bounce. The bird held its position and a very uncomfortable shallow climb ensued. DA was prob abt 7-8. Fun times.
