Yep- agree that familiarity has a lot to do with it. My proficiency doesn't affect my preference. Sometimes on cross-countries I'll activate the multi-function instrument display on foreflight and try it. I find it more difficult to fly as precisely as I can with steam gauges, which might not be saying much given that I'm not a professional, and it is a GPS-derived set of indications on the iPad. For the same reason that I prefer an analog watch over digital, the rate of change of dials/indications on steam gauges convey information. Getting that same information off a glass panel for me requires staring at one point on the display and concentration to detect pixel-based changes. If the VSI is showing an acceleration, that is detectable rapidly on a steam gauge. A swinging VSI or DG jumps out, at least to me. Videos of military HUDs that I've seen include rate vectors and such that give indications of rates of change of readings. I don't think the Garmin type glass display has these. Not that I'm a jet driver, just a wannabe My preferences, not a human factors expert. -f-

I'd love to have an app running in the background on my iPad that would serve as an audible, or less preferably- visual, altitude alert. This app could have multiple options either to warn when a pre-set altitude is approaching or when a deviation exceeds some threshold. I hope to upgrade my audio panel to interface with bluetooth audio annunciations. Does any EFB allow/do this?

That was more-or-less what I wrote. Great ramp appeal plus a new "modern" looking pointy spinner. A bit quieter in cruise, maybe a few dB. 0 knots discernable difference in cruise speed. I'd keep what you have unless ramp appeal has great value. You won't find it elsewhere.

Our '67C has a beefier clevis-type connection with two points of failure.

Looking forward to the results.

I see they are making 110 kts GS. Gotta hate those headwinds. -
exactly. The FAA would need to invest in infrared gas analyzers with heated optics for that.

All but the most expensive relative humidity sensors are inaccurate whenever the relative humidity is above 90 to 95%. Get close to freezing and all bets are off. Freezing fog will freeze on the sensor and its shield.

Thanks Rich. Hope that happens! -Fred

Recently I bought vintage Mooney visors for our C. They used to be installed as evidenced by holes and signs of the mount on the center post. I want to install them and see if I like them. Questions: what type of screws were used to mount the originals? Stainless steel or brass?

six gear collapses & gear ups in one week

The MSC that did my 2020 annual asked me how much hull insurance I carried. After I answered, he told me that his average bill to an insurance company for repairs after a g.u. landing neared $50k, and recommended that I increase my hull coverage, which I did. -
Once this stupid virus situation is under control, we plan a big loop to visit family, friends and new acquaintances. From Alabama to Colorado, Washington State, Oregon, California, Arizona, Texas and back. Hopefully in Sept.

Photographic evidence? Without it, doubts remain.

Test of the doggie headset was a mixed success. They come off his ears too easily when he moves. Any ideas on how to get them to stay over the ears? Not bad for his first flight. We put them on after starting the engine. The noise did bother him, and he seemed more at ease with the muffs in position.

My a/c also seems to like 2400 rpm compared to 2500, especially below about 8k. It's "calmer", with little difference in GPS indicated GS at the same MP. I cruise at 73-75% power and 2400 rpm down low using the JPI 900. Above about 5k, it is WOT but closed just enough to minimize onset of roughness while leaning and 2400 rpm. Following what Mike Busch wrote in "Engines", I run my carbureted beast 100-120F ROP.

Going a bit further off topic, the Johnson bar got its name from a big steel lever arm used in steam locomotives to turn the main steam pressure valve. You can speculate about where the name "Johnson" came from. Ok, back to the depressing discussion about GU landings. -
I wanted knots on the outer ring of my airspeed indicator. So I bought the style I wanted on eBay for not too much, and sent it to Rudy Instruments in Arkansas. For about 0.25 AMU's they overhauled/calibrated it and silk screened the color arcs from the POH on the face. It turned out quite nice as the photo shows. I reckon they could do the same kind of refresh on your Mooney ASI. Wow, 1958? I ask if you will post a photo of your panel. I'm curious to see what they looked like in the "A" model.

One engineer response: the certified mechanical AI is rock solid. Usually they provide warning before failure as OP noted. Inattentive pilots get burned. Having an electronic backup is a warm blanket in case that pesky vacuum pump goes T.U.

The old cable had bronze contacts so I replaced it with one with gold plated contacts- so that's not it. I tested it in 3 of the 4 jacks, same performance in each, I also tested my headset in those jacks, and it is great in each. Its not the jacks, nor the intercom settings. It's the microphone in that headset. I enjoy fixing things myself, especially when A&P oversight isn't required. I can do this. I think I'll look into ordering a new mic and see if that fixes the problem. Or, maybe somebody who got a really cool new set of Bose or some such headset for Christmas will sell their H10.13X headset. I want 9V ANR because my plane has jacks for 9V power in the panel. I'll modify to eliminate battery as per @DonMuncy

Back in 2018 when we were new to Mooney, the noise of speed was a bit too much for long trips. So, like @tigers2007, I upgraded our DC H10-13.4s to ANR. Huge improvement. Highly recommended. During recent radio troubleshooting, I discovered that compared to my headset, the co-pilot's headset is weak, both the speaker volume and microphone power. I took it apart to inspect, cleaned up wire placements, inspected connections, put them back together and it seems that I killed them. Annoying. Neither the headset or the microphone work, at all. An older H10-13.4 headset that I've had laying around needed a new cable, so I replaced it. No ANR in this one, so the cable replacement went easily. Tested it in a/c today and discovered that It has a weak microphone too. Tested in 3 of four jacks it required almost shouting to break squelch, when my headset does that with normal voice. Anybody else have problems with microphone levels in DC headsets? Do they go bad? The rear seat pax headset I have is an ASA, and it comes through loud and clear albeit with no ANR.

That happened to me this year. With the engine making copious quantities of aluminum glitter and oil analysis detected no problems. The MSC that did the annual didn't note any metal in the filter, but I did when I changed oil before and after the annual. Attentive oil changes can make a big difference. Relying on oil analyses to detect all engine problems is not wise.

Why does it weight 2-3 tonnes with a range of only 30 km? The Russian anti-drone helicopter UAV will reportedly spray a burning mixture of jet-fuel and dioxin-laced sticky transformer fluid on unsuspecting drones to punish the enemy in the long term. So Russian.
