Mooneys are water resistant not water proof...
0TreeLemur replied to Trenta's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
See the thread I linked above. Photos there. -
Because of all the military traffic using the field, Marietta, Florida, offers a free hot lunch to all, at least they did pre-Covid. Don't know who/why/how they do it, but it was tasty both times I had it while getting a prop ECI done at the local prop shop.

Intermittent squeal on both comms
0TreeLemur replied to 0TreeLemur's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I have a generator. It weighs a ton but is very quiet. @Baker Avionics nailed it I think. I'll confirm this weekend. -
Intermittent squeal on both comms
0TreeLemur replied to 0TreeLemur's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Will do! I was recently contacted via LinkedIn by the gentleman who owned her from 1970-72. He lives less than 45 Mooney minutes away in Georgia. Once covid is over, I promised him a visit! He's going to share photos with me when she was factory original "poppy red". -
Intermittent squeal on both comms

Yep, I'm planning a great big loop next summer to fill in some of those states. I'll definitely stop by for a visit when things get back to normal! -
Intermittent squeal on both comms
0TreeLemur replied to 0TreeLemur's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Hi Greg, that's gotta be it. Those parts must have fallen down into the gap between the seat and sidewall, and I just found a nut that fit and re-installed without any insulating washers. I really appreciate your advice on this. I'll PM you my info. Thanks so much for your help. -Fred -
M20C Rudder Trim Adjustment
0TreeLemur replied to 0TreeLemur's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
There is an intermittent squeal in both radios we're trying to eliminate. Got some good advice on that last night on the Panel/Avionics discussion. Other than that, I just want things to get back to normal, fly places and do fun things. I recently learned that there is a museum in Tampa dedicated to Salvador Dali that my co-pilot and I would love to visit. -

Why resistor inline with Transponder
0TreeLemur replied to Retz's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Wow, if I read correctly, that is a 55 Watt resistor. Electricity waster. Good riddance. -
Intermittent squeal on both comms
0TreeLemur replied to 0TreeLemur's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Thanks for writing Greg. I've got a sigtronics intercom and a Terra 230D audio panel. You might be onto something here with mic jacks. A couple of months ago I noticed that one of the back seat audio jacks had lost its capture nut. I had to take the side panel out to fix it. Maybe then I messed something up, with something on the mic jack side touching some part of the metal frame/steel tubing? -
Over the past six months or so my comm radios have developed an intermittent squeal when I transmit. This happens independent from which radio I'm transmitting on. At first I suspected the PTT switch, so I replaced that. Negative effect. Sometimes it is worse than other times. Often I'll PTT and start talking, and after 1 or 2 seconds the squeal comes in. Sometimes it happens immediately when I PTT without saying anything (now that's annoying). I've had a couple of controllers mention it. This happens independently from whether or not the other radio is on. It happens when the radio I'm testing is the only thing switched on. Seems unrelated to the intercom since controllers hear it. Anybody dealt with this one? Comm 1: KX155 Comm 2: GNS430W

Inspecting secret fuel screen
0TreeLemur replied to RobertGary1's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Contributing to thread creep instigated by @carusoam. I've been told at two different airports this year when challenged about the lack of use of a grounding strap during fueling operations: "Awww we don't connect the grounding strap anymore when we fuel airplanes. That's an old wives tale." Not making this up. So are vaccines. And good diet. And truth. And everything else being jettisoned in this seeming "age of stupidity" that we are living through. -
Propeller Flange Bushing Replacement
0TreeLemur replied to 0TreeLemur's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I was afraid it had somehow started slipping, which it had not. Apparently that sometimes happens. They make oversized ones for that case. -
We used a digital kitchen scale and a teflon cutting board. Estimated the net weight of the product per container and used for calculations, put it on the cutting board and trowel together kind of like mixing paint. Good luck. Stuff is nasty. To extend the cooking analogy, trowel it on the window frame like you are icing a cake.

Fuel contamination corrosion x treatment
0TreeLemur replied to markazzarito's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
That is very interesting. Today while cleaning I noticed that a few of the rivets on the top of the fuel tank are showing some brown staining under the paint. What you describe explains that. Drat. I guess that means the paint will be coming off those spots one of these days. -

Nice vid. The robot had a bad day when it painted my prop at the factory... I hope they honor the warranty. -
Best value starts with skill to identify your mission, a thorough pre-buy inspection, and I would say luck. Patience is a real virtue when looking for an airplane. Our C sprung a serious fuel leak seven months after we acquired her, necessitating an unexpected and expensive tank reseal. That's the luck component. I've got other examples. Buy the one you want that has the features you want. Upgrades can be really expensive and reveal unexpected surprises as well. Buy one that has been loved. Spend more upfront for that and you'll save money in the future. Good luck!

M20C Rudder Trim Adjustment
0TreeLemur replied to 0TreeLemur's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Using sheet metal pliers, adjusted the tab at the lower aft corner of the rudder about 3/8" left as a first try. Flight tested. No handling differences noted.Result: ball is centered without holding any right rudder in cruise. Cool. -
Propeller Flange Bushing Replacement
0TreeLemur replied to 0TreeLemur's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Received re-studded Hartzell "Top-Prop" Friday. There was a manufacturing defect. One stud did not have enough Loc-tite, and the roll pin failed. Called Hartzell and was told that all warranty claims must be submitted through the vendor that sold it to me, so I'll be doing that. Receiving a brand new prop with mis-applied paint and an incorrectly assembled stud is not super-duper. I think Hartzell owes me for the A&P labor charge for twice installing/uninstalling this propeller. We'll see if I get it. Yesterday I helped my A&P install it. Torqued right up to spec. no problem. Test flown, and seems fine. Prop stops at 10:30-4:30 position looking aft as before. -
China has built one that dwarfs it. Given that the radio astronomy community pretty much stopped writing proposals to use the Arecibo telescope, it was being used to search for little green men. Lesson here for MS: Lack of maintenance in a humid, salty atmosphere is hard on metal things. Without proper maintenance, they aren't going to last too long.

Any indication of the cause of the blockage? Plane parked outdoors? Insects? Curious of the situation that led to this problem. Thanks.

Propeller Flange Bushing Replacement
0TreeLemur replied to 0TreeLemur's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Update- called the prop shop this morning. Owner of shop confirmed to me that one stud was slipping. Roll pin either sheared or was absent (don't know this detail yet), and insufficient thread lock was applied AT THE FACTORY. I've been pretty casual about the paint coming off and need to repaint, but manufacturing defect with safety implications on a brand new propeller is entirely another thing. I called Hartzell this morning and was told that all warranty claims must pass through the seller, so I'll do that. -
Propeller Flange Bushing Replacement
0TreeLemur replied to 0TreeLemur's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
At this point I'm not going to remove that bushing. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it. In my little experiment I tightened the bolt up to 60 ft-lb easily. I'm suspecting that there was something wrong with the prop stud. The prop shop is replacing all six. My A&P didn't think to check and see whether or not that stud it contained a roll pin. Maybe there wasn't a roll pin installed and the Loktite broke. We'll see. Mysterious. -
Propeller Flange Bushing Replacement
0TreeLemur replied to 0TreeLemur's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
In anticipation of removing the misbehaving prop flange bushing, I decided to do a test. Suspecting that the 'F' bushing is slipping under torque, I did an experiment. Using 2 ea. 1/2" x 20 bolts, one installed from the front into the suspect bushing, and the other screwed in from the back into the other short 'C' bushing, I attached a torque wrench set to 60 ft-lb to F, and held bushing C with a wrench as shown below. It took 60 ft-lb of torque with no slip. !?! WTF? Saturday my A&P couldn't get that prop bushing torqued much above 50 ft-lb. This is a ridiculous mystery. I also took a photo showing the threads in all bushings. The offending one is shown with the black arrow. Tomorrow I plan to talk to the prop shop and see if they noticed something wrong with that stud. It seems that it must be the stud, or a gremlin. I don't think there is anything wrong with that bushing. -
Mooneys are water resistant not water proof...
0TreeLemur replied to Trenta's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
search google "avionics bay weatherstripping site:mooneyspace.com" Turns up this thread: This stuff WORKS. No black goo. Also do fashion a roof for your avionics stack as @Jerry 5TJ suggests. That is covered in the above thread too. Proof: Earlier this year I penetrated the outskirts of decaying tropical storm Beta over Arkansas. According to the radar, it wasn't convective, but it was raining from the aft overhead vents, and the air scoop was down. The drain tube on my aircraft is open, so I assume was overloaded. I experienced no issues with any other leaks. @Hector recommended this stuff, he flies a lot in rainy Florida. My first experience with poorly sealed avionics panels cost me an approx 2AMU service bill from Garmin for my 430W a couple of years ago. Since installing this stuff backed up by a little silicone in the central gap region, no problemo.
